  • Truss members built-up with double angles back-to-back have monosymmetric cross-section and twisting always accompanies flexion upon the onset of buckling about the axis of symmetry. Approximate formulae for calculating the buckling capacity are presented in this paper for routine design purpose. For a member susceptible only to flexural buckling, its optimal cross-section should consist of slender plate elements so as to get larger radius of gyration. But, occurrence of twisting changes the situation owing to the weakness of thin plates in resisting torsion. Criteria for limiting the leg slenderness are discussed herein. Truss web members in compression are usually considered as hinged at both ends for out-of-plane buckling. In case one (or both) end of member is not supported laterally by bracing member, its adjoining members have to provide an elastic support of adequate stiffness in order not to underdesign the member. The stiffness provided by either compression or tension chords in different cases is analyzed, and the effect of initial crookedness of compression chord is taken into account. Formulae are presented to compute the required stiffness of chord member and to determine the effective length factor for inadequately constrained compressive diagonals.

  • This paper considers the combination of cyclic and axial loads to investigate the hysteretic performance of H-section 6061-T6 aluminum alloy members. The hysteretic performance of aluminum alloy members is the basis for the seismic performance of aluminum alloy structures. Despite the prevalence of aluminum alloy reticulated shells structures worldwide, research into the seismic performance of aluminum alloy structures remains inadequate. To address this deficiency, we design and conduct cyclic axial load testing of three H-section members based on a reliable testing system. The influence of slenderness ratios and bending direction on the failure form, bearing capacity, and stiffness degradation of each member are analyzed. The experiment results show that overall buckling dominates the failure mechanism of all test members before local buckling occurs. As the load increases after overall buckling, the plasticity of the member develops, finally leading to local buckling and fracture failure. The results illustrate that the plasticity development of the local buckling position is the main reason for the stiffness degradation and failure of the member. Additionally, with the increase of the slenderness ratio, the energy-dissipation capacity and stiffness of the member decrease significantly. Simultaneously, a finite element model based on the Chaboche hybrid strengthening model is established according to the experiment, and the rationality of the constitutive model and validity of the finite element simulation method are verified. The parameter analysis of twenty-four members with different sections, slenderness ratios, bending directions, and boundary conditions are also carried out. Results show that the section size and boundary condition of the member have a significant influence on stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity. Based on the above, the appropriate material constitutive relationship and analysis method of H-section aluminum alloy members under cyclic loading are determined, providing a reference for the seismic design of aluminum alloy structures.

  • This paper presents an effective hysteretic model for the prediction and evaluation of steel reinforced concrete member seismic performance. This model adopts the load-deformation relationship acquired from monotonic load tests and incorporates the double-pivot behavior of composite members subjected to cyclic loads. Deterioration in member stiffness was accounted in the analytical model. The composite member performance assessment control parameters were calibrated from the test results. Comparisons between the cyclic load test results and analytical model validated the proposed method's effectiveness.

  • If we use a third order approximation for the displacement function of beam element in finite element methods, finite element solutions of beams yield nodal displacement values matching to beam theory results to have no connection with the number increasing of elements of beams. It is assumed that, as the member displacement value at beam nodes are correct, the calculation procedure of beam element stiffness matrix have no numerical errors. A the member forces are calculated by the equations of $\frac{-M}{EI}=\frac{{d^2}{\omega}}{dx^2}\;and\;\frac{dM}{dx}=V$, the member forces at nodes of beams have errors in a moment and a shear magnitudes in the case of smaller number of element. The nodal displacement value of plate subject to the lateral load converge to the exact values according to the increase of the number of the element. So it is assumed that the procedures of plate element stiffness matrix calculations has a error in the fundamental assumptions. The beam methods for the high accuracy ratio solution Is also applied to the plate analysis. The method of reducing a error ratio of member forces and element stiffness matrix in the finite element methods is studied. Results of study were as follows. 1. The matrixes of EI[B] and [K] in the equations of M(x)=EI[B]{q} and M(x) = [K]{q}+{Q} of beams are same. 2. The equations of $\frac{-M}{EI}=\frac{{d^2}{\omega}}{dx^2}\;and\;\frac{dM}{dx}=V$ for the member forces have a error ratio in a finite element method of uniformly loaded structures, so equilibrium node loads {Q} must be substituted in the equation of member forces as the numerical examples of this paper revealed.

  • This paper presents the solution scheme of using the continuous formulation of 1-D linear member for the dynamic analysis of structures consisting of axially loaded members. The context describes specific applications of such scheme to the verification of experimental data obtained from field test of bridges carried out by a microwave interferometer system and velocimeters. Attention is focused on analysis outlines that may be applicable to in-situ assessment for cable-stayed bridges. The derivation of the dynamic stiffness matrix of a prismatic member with distributed properties is briefly reviewed. A back calculation formula using frequencies of two arbitrary modes of vibration is next proposed to compute the tension force in cables. Derivation of the proposed formula is based on the formulation of an axially loaded flexural member. The applications of the formulation and the proposed formula are illustrated with a series of realistic examples.

  • Because of the simplicity in analysis and design of steel structure, the connections of members are assumed either as perfectly hinged or rigidly fixed. However, a more economical design would result if the effect of restraint in connections were included in analyzing frame structure. From this point of view, stiffness matrices for member with bracketed connections are presented in the form of the stiffness matrices for member with variable moment of inertia, modified by a correction matrix, whose elements are functions of fixity factors of the connections. To obtain fixity factors, the displacements and stress distribution of bracketed connections are investigated by using of the degital computer program, which have been developed to make computing time shorten and the round off errors smaller. The relationship of moments and slip angle in bracketed connections are presented in the form of curves, which can be used in establishing a stiffness matrices for member with bracketed connections.

  • This study examined the effect of rotational stiffness of joints between vertical and horizontal members in system supports. In order to prevent repeated disasters of system supports, it is important to examine the accurate behavior of system supports. Among various factors affecting the complex behavior of system supports, this study focused on the stiffness of joints between vertical and horizontal members. The considered joint was modelled by a rotational spring, but the translational displacements were fixed. The stiffness of rotational spring was calculated by utilizing the usable experimental data. In addition, the hinge connection condition, which is generally considered in design and only restrict the translational displacements, was modelled to compare the results. The case with the rotational stiffness in joints showed 3.5 times buckling loads compared to the case without the rotational stiffness. Thus, the structural behavior of the vertical member in system supports was similar to the vertical member with the fixed condition. For the combined stresses of vertical members, the combined stress ratios were reduced 5~6% by considering the rotational stiffness of connecting parts. However, for the horizontal member where showed relatively small stress range, the stresses were increased 2.3~7.6 times by considering the rotational stiffness in connecting parts.

  • The widely used spot welded section members of vehicles are structures which absorb most of the energy in a front-end collision. In front-end collision, sufficiently absorbed in the front parts, the impact energy does not reach the passengers. Simultaneously, the frame gets less damaged. This structures have to be very stiff, but collapse progressively to absorb the kinetic energy as expected. In the view of stiffness, the double-hat shaped section member is stiffer than the hat shaped section member. In progress of collapse, the hat shaped section member is collapsing progressively, but the double-hat shaped section member does not due to stiffness. An analysis on the hat shaped section member was previously completed. This paper concerns the collapse characteristic of the double-hat shaped section member. In the program system presented in this study, an explicit finite element code, LS-DYNA3D is adopted for simulating complicate collapse behavior of double hat shaped section members with respect to spot weld pitches. And comparing with the results from the quasi-static and impact experiment, the simulation has been verified.
