Virtual machine tools have been magnified recently as manufacturers could estimate performances of machine tools before design and manufacturing of them. However, it requires much time and efforts to make FEM models and predict precision of machine tools well because machine tools are composed of many joints such as bolt joints, LM joints, rotational bearing joints and mounts. Especially, we have studied computational modeling methods of bolt joints to predict precision of machine tools well in this paper. Stiffness and damping coefficients of bolt joints are investigated and generalized with respect to fasten forces through experiments and FEM analysis. Matrix 27 element of ANSYS is used and bolt joints are simplified as square areas with 8 nodes to apply stiffness and damping simultaneously. Additionally, coordinate transformation of matrix 27 for bolt joints is induced to apply to skewed bolt joints of machine tools and evaluate it using FEM analysis.
In this paper, the stiffness and the mass matrices for the in-plane motion of a thin circular beam element are derived respectively from the strain energy and the kinetic energy by using the natural shape functions of the exact in-plane displacements which are obtained from an integration of the differential equations of a thin circular beam element in static equilibrium. The matrices are formulated in the local polar coordinate system and in the global Cartesian coordinate system with the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia. Some numerical examples are performed to verify the element formulation and its analysis capability. The comparison of the FEM results with the theoretical ones shows that the element can describe quite efficiently and accurately the in-plane motion of thin circular beams. The stiffness and the mass matrices with respect to the coefficient vector of shape functions are presented in appendix to be utilized directly in applications without any numerical integration for their formulation.
The scaled boundary finite element method is extended to evaluate the dynamic stress intensity factors and T-stress with a numerical procedure based on the improved continued-fraction. The improved continued-fraction approach for the dynamic stiffness matrix is introduced to represent the inertial effect at high frequencies, which leads to numerically better conditioned matrices. After separating the singular stress term from other high order terms, the internal displacements can be obtained by numerical integration and no mesh refinement is needed around the crack tip. The condition numbers of coefficient matrix of the improved method are much smaller than that of the original method, which shows that the improved algorithm can obtain well-conditioned coefficient matrices, and the efficiency of the solution process and its stability can be significantly improved. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the increased robustness and efficiency of the proposed method in both homogeneous and bimaterial crack problems.
The analysis of the progressive collapse resistance of structures is a well-known issue among structural engineers. Large-span reticulated dome structures are commonly utilized in large public buildings, necessitating research into their progressive collapse resistance to assure user safety. The most significant part of improving the structural resilience of reticulated domes is to evaluate their key elements. Based on a stiffness-based evaluation approach, this work offers a calculating procedure for element importance coefficient. For both original and damaged structures, evaluations are carried out using the global stiffness matrix and the determinant. The Kiewitt, Schwedler, and Sunflower reticulated domes are investigated to explore the distribution characteristic of element importance coefficients in the single-layer dome structures. Moreover, the influences of the load levels, load distributions, geometric parameters and topological features are also discussed. The results can be regarded as the initial concept design reference for single-layer reticulated domes.

A two degree-of-freedom mathematical model is presented to investigate the friction mechanism of a disc brake system. A contact parameter is introduced to describe the coupling between the in-plane and the out-of-plane motions. The model with the contact parameter is considered under the assumption that the out-of-plane motion depends on the friction force along the in-plane motion. In order to describe the relationship between the friction force and the out-of plane motion, the dynamic friction coefficient is considered as a function of both relative velocity and normal farce. Using this friction law, a contact stiffness matrix along the normal direction can be obtained. The out-of-plane motion is then investigated by both the stability analysis and the numerical analysis for various parametric conditions. The results show that the stiffness parameters of the pad and the disc must be controlled at the same time. Also, the numerical analysis shows the existence of limit cycle caused by the effect of intermittent contact stiffness.
In this article, free vibration behavior of electro-magneto-thermo sandwich Timoshenko beam made of porous core and Graphene Platelet Reinforced Composite (GPLRC) in a thermal environment is investigated. The governing equations of motion are derived by using the modified strain gradient theory for micro structures and Hamilton's principle. The magneto electro are under linear function along the thickness that contains magnetic and electric constant potentials and a cosine function. The effects of material length scale parameters, temperature change, various distributions of porous, different distributions of graphene platelets and thickness ratio on the natural frequency of Timoshenko beam are analyzed. The results show that an increase in aspect ratio, the temperature change, and the thickness of GPL leads to reduce the natural frequency; while vice versa for porous coefficient, volume fractions and length of GPL. Moreover, the effect of different size-dependent theories such as CT, MCST and MSGT on the natural frequency is investigated. It reveals that MSGT and CT have most and lowest values of natural frequency, respectively, because MSGT leads to increase the stiffness of micro Timoshenko sandwich beam by considering three material length scale parameters. It is seen that by increasing porosity coefficient, the natural frequency increases because both stiffness and mass matrices decreases, but the effect of reduction of mass matrix is more than stiffness matrix. Considering the piezo magneto-electric layers lead to enhance the stiffness of a micro beam, thus the natural frequency increases. It can be seen that with increasing of the value of WGPL, the stiffness of microbeam increases. As a result, the value of natural frequency enhances. It is shown that in hc/h = 0.7, the natural frequency for WGPL = 0.05 is 8% and 14% less than its for WGPL = 0.06 and WGPL = 0.07, respectively. The results show that with an increment in the length and width of GPLs, the natural frequency increases because the stiffness of micro structures enhances and vice versa for thickness of GPLs. It can be seen that the natural frequency for aGPL = 25 ㎛ and hc/h = 0.6 is 0.3% and 1% more than the one for aGPL = 5 ㎛ and aGPL = 1 ㎛, respectively.
Wedging in a frictional elastic system is defined if the state of stick exists after the external loading on the system is removed. This paper presents a method to determine the critical coefficient of wedging for an elastic frictional system by considering the separation state. Wedging is always possible if the coefficient of friction exceeds a critical value known as the critical wedging coefficient. This method requires two concepts: a necessary and sufficient condition for wedging, which can be interpreted as positive spanning sets of constraint vectors existing in the wedged system, and the minimal positive basis that enables a minimum wedging coefficient. The algorithm based on the positive spanning concept is repeatedly executed after eliminating nodes from the contact stiffness matrix, for which the separation states are impending. The simulation results show that once a node enters the separation state, it never returns to the contact state again and the critical wedging coefficient reduces during repeated algorithm execution. The benefit of this method is that the computation time permits handling models with large numbers of contact nodes. The algorithm can also numerically find the critical wedging coefficient, thereby contributing to fastening and assembly performance improvements in mechanical systems.
Gearboxes are often used in the petrochemical and electrical power plants to transmit mechanical power between two branches of a machinery train rotating at different speeds. When the gearboxes are connected with rotors supported by journal bearings, bearing loads vary in magnitude and direction with rotor speed and torque transmitted by the gearboxes. In this study, dynamic characteristics of the system which consists of gearboxes and a rotor supported by journal bearings are investigated analytically and experimentally by employing the polynomial transfer matrix method and modal analysis under different speeds and torque levels. Journal bearing loads due to the transmitted torque are claculated analytically and the stiffness and damping coefficient of the journal bearings are obtained using finite element method. Comparison of the analytical and experimental results shows that the cross coupled stiffness coefficients increase with increasing rotor speed, while the cross coupled damping coefficients decrease. This generates the oil whirl instability in the journal bearings. As the transmitted torque level goes up, the stiffness coefficients of the journal bearing and the first horizontal natural frequency increase. High levels of the transmitted torque produce high bearing stiffness since the contact loads of the mating gear teeth increase. The logarithmic decrement, which is a stability indicator, is shown to decrease with increasing speed and decreasing torque. Thus, at the low torque level, the system become unstable even at the low shaft speed.

In this paper, a dynamic model for the rotor shaft-coupling-blade system is developed. The blades are attached to a disk and driven by an electric motor shaft which is flexible in torsion. We assumed that the shaft torsional flexibility is lumped in the flexible coupling which is usually adopted in rotor systems. The Lagrangian approach with the small deformation theory for both blade-bending and shaft-torsional deformations is employed for developing the equation of the motion. The assumed modes method is used for estimating the blade transverse deflection. The numerical results highlight the effects of both structural damping of the system and the torsional stiffness of the flexible coupling to the dynamic response of the blade. The results showed strong coupling between the blade bending and shaft torsional vibrations in the form of inertial nonlinearif, stiffness hardening and softening.
