The stiffness and natural frequencies for blades, flexbeam, and torque tube of bearingless rotor system are measured to determine the material input properties such as mass distributions and stiffness distribution for the rotor dynamics and load analysis. The flap stiffness, lag stiffness, and torsional stiffness are calculated by measuring section strain or twist angle, gages position, and applied loads through bending and twist tests. The modal tests are undertaken to find out the natural frequencies for flap, lag, torsion modes in non-rotating conditions. The stiffness values and mass properties are tuned and updated to match prediction frequencies to the measured frequencies. The rotorcraft comprehensive code(CAMRAD II) is used to analyze the natural frequencies of the specimens. The analysis results with the updated material properties agree well with the measured frequencies. The updated properties will be used to analyze the rotor stability, dynamic characteristics and loads for the rotor rotation test in a whirl tower.
Based on the Euler beam theory and the elastic strain energy method, the elastic stiffness formula of the holddown spring assembly consisting of several leaves was previously derived. Even though the previous formula was known to be useful to estimate the elastic stiffness of the holddown spring assembly, recently it was reported that the elastic stiffness from the previous formula deviated greatly from the test results as the number of leaves was increased. The objective of this study is to extend the previous formula in order to resolve such an increasing deviation when increasing the number of leaves. Additionally, considering the friction forces acting on the interfaces between the leaves, we obtained an extended elastic stiffness formula. The characteristic test and the elastic stiffness analysis on the various kinds of specimens of the holddown spring assembly have been carried out; the validity of the extended formula has been verified by the comparison of their results. As a result of comparisons, it is found that the extended formula is able to evaluate the elastic stiffness of the holddown spring assembly within the maximum error range of + 12%, irrespective of the number of the leaves.
In this paper, the static and dynamic stiffness of the air bearing stage for micro-micro machine tool are examined experimentally. For stiffness and precision concerns, air bearing stages are adapted for 3-axis micro-milling machine which is size of $200x200\;mm^2$. The air bearings in the stage are preloaded by permanent magnets to achieve desired bearing clearance and stiffness for vertical direction. As the stiffness of the air bearing is primary interests, static stiffness test were performed on XY stage in Z direction and Z column in Y direction. Dynamic test were performed on XY stage and Z column, respectively. Both static and dynamic tests were performed in different air pressure conditions. The vertical stiffness of XY stage is about 9 N/ pm where Y stiffness of Z column is much smaller as $1\;N/{\mu}m$ because of the large moment generated by Y force on the column.
In this study, finite element modeling and material property tests are performed for the finite element analysis of rubber isolator parts which support the engine and isolate the vibration. As a result of the P direction analysis of the rubber isolator parts, the static stiffness in the P direction was 44.2 kg/mm, which is well within the error of 5% as compared with the test result of 46.1 kg/mm. The static stiffness of the rubber isolator parts in the Q direction was calculated to be 7.9 kg/mm, which is comparable to the test result of 8.6 kg/mm, with an error of less than 8%. As a result of the analysis on the Z direction, the static stiffness was calculated as 57.7 kg/mm, and the test results were not available. Through this study, it is expected that the time and cost for prototype development can be reduced through nonlinear finite element analysis for rubber isolator parts.
In this study, the shaft resistance of drilled shafts socketed into weathered-and soft-rocks was examined by the constant normal stiffness(CNS) test. Large scale model tests were performed for different unconfined compressive strength, socket roughness, initial normal stress, and normal stiffness for identifying shear load transfer characteristics. Through comparisons with previous studies, it is found that the results by the present approach is good agreement with the general trend observed by existing empirical and analytical results.
Damage due to frost action in pavement structure system is creating either frost heave or stiffness-weakening of subgrade soil follow melting. The formation of ice lenses requires a frost-susceptible soil, freezing temperatures, and continuous water supply. Eliminating one of these conditions suffices to significantly reduce the intensity of frost action. It is important to know characteristics of subgrade soil in frost susceptibility or decide degree of freezing permission. Also, study on the stiffness variation of subgrade soil during freezing and thawing cycle is very important. In this study, Impact resonance test for subgrade soil at freezing and thawing confirms that is applied for.
During helicopter rotor system development process, whirl tower test is conducted basically. For conducting whirl tower test during bearingless hub development process, design new blade or using existing blade with repair or remodeling. Because simple shape and efficient aerodynamic characteristic, BO-105 blade is used for hub system development widely. Originally BO-105 blade is used for hingeless hub, ho flap stiffness and lag stiffness on blade root area is relatively low. So applying BO-105 blade to bearingless hub whirl tower test, root area have to be reinforce. In this process, blade root area's section property will be changed. In this paper, suggest reinforcement method of BO-105 blade root area and study dynamic characteristic of bearingless rotor system with reinforcement BO-105 blade.
It is important to make a mechanical structure precisely and reasonably in predicting the dynamic characteristics, controlling the vibration, and designing the structure dynamics. In finite element analysis model updating is appropriate as the design parameter is used to analyze the dynamic system. The errors can be contained from the physical parameters and the element modeling. From the dynamic test, more precise dynamic characteristics can be obtained. In this paper, model updating algorithm is developed using frequency difference between experiment and calculation. Modal frequencies are obtained by experiment and finite element analysis for beams with various cross section and shapes which have added masses and holes in the middle. For plates with and without groove, experiment and analyses are carried out by applying free boundary conditions as well. Mass and stiffness matrices are updated by comparing test and analytical modal frequencies. The result shows that the updated frequencies become closer to the test frequencies in case that both matrices are updated. An improved analytical model is obtained by changing model parameters such that the discrepancy between test and finite element frequencies is minimized. For beam and plate models updating of mass and stiffness matrices can improve the dynamical behavior of the model by acting on the physical parameters such as masses and stiffness.
To evaluate the variation of spring stiffness in nuclear plant operating condition, load-displacement tests ($P-{\delta}$ test) were performed using two kinds of space grid springs in high temperature and high pressure water. With increasing temperature, stiffness of each spring gradually decreased except $100{\sim}150^{\circ}C$. It is apparently showed that spring with convex shape had a relatively high stability of spring stiffness at high temperature compared with I-shaped spring. It is suggested that the variation of spring stiffness with temperature and spring shape should be considered as an important variable in the design and analysis of the fuel assembly.
