A method of weight evaluation of the load-bearing structural elements of cars is presented and the weight ratio of the analysis model is investigated. Replacing the materials of floor elements of the car into the high-strength steel, a considerable weight-reduction of the model has been obtained. The 1500cc model is selected for the present study and the stick model analysis is employed for the structural analysis. The torsional stiffness of the weight-reduced model is also evaluated and it is shown it has a reasonable rigidity. The ratio of the weight of the load-bearing structural elements to the unladen vehicle weight of cars is about 0.12for the 1500cc model and the weight-reduction of this study can be obtained around 17% of the weight of the load-bearing structural elements.
A theoretical procedure to estimate spectral displacement of a hysteretic oscillator with bilinear stiffness excited by band-limited excitation is presented. The stochastic method of ground-motion simulation is combined with the random vibration theory to compute linear and nonlinear structural response. The response is obtained by computing the root-mean-square oscillator response using dissipation energy balancing by integrating over all energy levels of system weighting with the stationary probability density of the energy. The results are presented in a convenient form, and the accuracy of the procedure is assessed by comparison with results obtained with the time-domain method using the recorded data. The model shows little or no bias at the structural period of engineering interest.

In this study, a frequency domain model updating method is presented using power spectral density (PSD) data. It uses the sensitivity of PSD function with respect to the unknown structural parameters through a decomposed form of transfer function. The stiffness parameters are captured with high accuracy through solving the sensitivity equations utilizing the least square approach. Using numerically noise polluted data, the model updating results of a truss model prove robustness of the method against measurement and mass modelling errors. Results prove the capabilities of the method for parameter estimation using highly noise polluted data of low ranges of excitation frequency.
In this paper, the nonlinear control of high precision pointing stabilization system using feedback-linearization design methodology based on system parameter identification is discussed. Modern nonlinear servomechanism theory is adapted to cope with the hard nonlinearities inherent in the turret system. The mathematical models of electrical turret driving system to develop a high performance control algorithm are derived, and the parameter estimation algorithm identifying the unknown system parameters such as vicious and coulomb frictions, stiffness and inertia is developed. Through computer simulation and experiments, it is shown that pointing and tracking accuracy and stabilization against the wideband stochastic disturbance induced by vehicle running on the bump course are improved. Therefore, it is considered the proposed nonlinear control technique is effective in counteracting the nonlinearities and disturbances.
This paper presents a multi-robot path planner for environment exploration and monitoring. Robotics systems are being widely used as data measurement tools, especially in dangerous environment. For large scale environment monitoring, multiple robots are required in order to save time. The path planner should not only consider the collision avoidance but efficient coordination of robots for optimal measurements. Nonlinear spring force based planning algorithm is integrated with the spatial gradient following path planner. Perturbation/Correlation based estimation of spatial gradient is applied. An algorithm of tuning the stiffness for robot coordination is presented. The performance of the proposed algorithm is discussed with simulation results.
In this study, fatigue crack propagation in composite material under fatigue is investigated by simulation result. When another material on the specimen exists vertically to the crack line, the phenomena that crack may go straight or propagate along the boundary face according to the elastic modulus ratio of another material to matrix are investigated with compact tension specimen by compliance method. Crack propagation direction is evaluated by compliance method. By arranging this study result systematically about the crack propagation behavior due to the stiffness of inhomogeneous material, high-tech material (automobile, aircraft and steel industry) can be improved. The estimation of safety design and life (construction & nuclear power station, etc.) will be of great value industrially.
Investigated is the relationship between tool deflection and geometrical accuracy in side wall machining. Form error is predicted directly from the tool deflection without surface generation. Developed model can predict the surface form error about three hundred times faster than the previous method. Cutting forces and tool deflection are calculated considering tool geometry, tool setting error, and machine tool stiffness. The characteristics and the difference of generated surface shape in up milling and down milling are discussed. The usefulness of the presented method is verified from a set of experiments under various cutting conditions generally used in die and mold manufacture. This study contributes to real time surface shape estimation and cutting process planning for the improvement of geometrical accuracy.
It has been resulted that Lagrange multiplier method with statistical approach was superior to traditional harmonic balance method in identifying the nonlinear loudspeaker parameters when output signals were contaminated with Gaussian random noise. We have known that the displacement-dependent characteristic values of nonlinear parameters identified by traditional harmonic balance method were estimated less than original values by the increase of output noise and the stiffness coefficients were very sensitive to output noise. Also, by the sensitivity analysis we have verified that the harmonic distortions in acoustic radiation was mainly due to nonlinearity of force factor caused by uneven magnetic fields and that reducing the nonlinearity of damping coefficients were very effective for improving second harmonic distrotion of acoustic radiation.

Structural health monitoring of existing infrastructure is currently an important field of research, where elaborate experimental programs and advanced analytical methods are used in identifying the current state of health of critical and important structures. The paper outlines two methods of system identification of beam-like reinforced concrete structures representing bridges, through static measurements, in a distributed damage scenario. The first one is similar to the stiffness method, re-cast and the second one to flexibility method. A least square error (LSE) based solution method is used for the estimation of flexural rigidities and damages of simply supported, cantilever and propped cantilever beam from the measured deformation values. The performance of both methods in the presence of measurement errors is demonstrated. An experiment on an un-symmetrically damaged simply supported reinforced concrete beam is used to validate the developed method. A method for damage prognosis is demonstrated using a generalized, indeterminate, propped cantilever beam.
