  • It has been known that one-dimensional rod theory is very effective as a simplified analytical approach to large scale or complicated structures such as high-rise buildings, in preliminary design stages. It replaces an original structure by a one-dimensional rod which has an equivalent stiffness in terms of global properties. If the structure is composed of distinct constituents of different stiffness such as coupled walls with opening, structural behavior is significantly governed by the local variation of stiffness. This paper proposes an extended version of the rod theory which accounts for the two-dimensional local variation of structural stiffness; viz, variation in the transverse direction as well as longitudinal stiffness distribution. The governing equation for the two-dimensional rod theory is formulated from Hamilton's principle by making use of a displacement function which satisfies continuity conditions across the boundary between the distinct structural components in the transverse direction. Validity of the proposed theory is confirmed by comparison with numerical results of computational tools in the cases of static, free vibration and forced vibration problems for various structures.

  • A curved beam is one of the basic and important structural elements in structural design. In this paper, the authors formulated the computational algorithm for analyzing the free vibration of curved beams using the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method. The concept of the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method is the combination of the modeling technique of the finite element method and the transfer technique of the transfer stiffness coefficient method. And, we confirm the effectiveness the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method from the free vibration analysis of two numerical models which are a semicircle beam and a quarter circle beam.

  • Ballasted track is under the circumstance of repetition of deterioration and recovery. Track deterioration is presented as track irregularity or settlement, and dynamic force subjected to track is one of major cause of the deterioration. The dynamic force is determined from the dynamic interaction between track and vehicle. Rail-pad stiffness is one of the factor affects track dynamic property. In this study, the relationship between rail-pad stiffness and track settlement was investigated. Dynamic forces according to various rail-pad stiffness was obtained from the dynamic vehicle-track interaction analysis using DARTS-NL. Track settlement was calculated by substitution the dynamic forces into various formulas for track settlement. From the result of analysis, it was known that the track settlement is increased about 6% when the rail-pad stiffness rise about twice. And this result leads that there is only a little relationship between rail-pad stiffness and track settlement.

  • The objective of this research is to explore the analysis and test method for the reliable design and fabrication of a high precision dynamically tuned gyroscope. The tuning frequency is decided by the calculation of mass moment of inertia of rotor and gimbal and the stiffness of flexures. Due to the complex geometry of the flexure, calculation of the stiffness of the suspension flexure is difficult. In this paper, three analytical methods for obtaining the stiffness of the flexure are porposed and a special testing method is used for checking the accuracy of the computed results.

  • An elastic stiffness formula of a leaf type holddown spring(HDS) assembly with a uniformly tapered width from $w_0$ to $w_14$ over the length, has been analytically derived based on Euler beam theory and Castigliano's theorem. Elastic stiffnesses of the tapered-width leaf type HDSs(TW-HDSs) designed in the same dimensional design spaces as the KOFA HDSs have been evaluated from the derived formula, in addition, a parametric study on the elastic stiffness of the TW-HDSs has been carried out. Analysis results show that, as the effects of axial and shear force on the elastic stiffness of He TW-HDSs have been 0.15~0.21% of the elastic stiffness, most of the elastic stiffness is attributed to the bending moment, and that elastic stiffnesses of the TW-HDSs have been about 32~33% higher than those of the KOFA HDSs. It is found that the number of leaves composing a HDS assembly could be lessened by one under the conditions that the TW-HDSs have been adopted in KOFA.

  • Negative stiffness dampers (NSDs) have been proven an efficient solution to vibration control of stay cables. Although previous studies usually assumed a linear negative stiffness behavior of NSDs, many negative stiffness devices produce negative stiffness with nonlinear behavior. This paper systematically evaluates the impact of nonlinearity in negative stiffness on vibration control performance for stay cables. A linearization method based on energy equivalent principle is proposed, and subsequently, the impact of two types of nonlinear stiffness, namely, displacement hardening and softening stiffness, is evaluated. Through the Hilbert transform (HT) of free vibration responses, the effects of nonlinear stiffness of an NSD on the modal frequencies, damping ratios and frequency response functions of a stay cable is also investigated. The HT analysis results validate the accuracy of the linearization method.

  • In this study, finite element modeling and material property tests are performed for the finite element analysis of rubber isolator parts which support the engine and isolate the vibration. As a result of the P direction analysis of the rubber isolator parts, the static stiffness in the P direction was 44.2 kg/mm, which is well within the error of 5% as compared with the test result of 46.1 kg/mm. The static stiffness of the rubber isolator parts in the Q direction was calculated to be 7.9 kg/mm, which is comparable to the test result of 8.6 kg/mm, with an error of less than 8%. As a result of the analysis on the Z direction, the static stiffness was calculated as 57.7 kg/mm, and the test results were not available. Through this study, it is expected that the time and cost for prototype development can be reduced through nonlinear finite element analysis for rubber isolator parts.

  • Wire ropes are widely used in cable car, suspension bridge and elevator, etc. and composed of single or multi-layer strands. It is difficult to find out the characteristics of a strand or wire rope because of complicated geometry and contact condition. In this study, the axial stiffness is evaluated using finite element method and reliable finite element analysis model is presented, taking into consideration the convergence on the length. The axial stiffness predictive equation of a strand is developed using analysis of variance, which can be applicable for characterizing the relationship between load and displacement when the strand configuration is determined.

  • The dynamic characteristic of a wrist power transmission examine closely with mass property, to present the model which induce the vibration is ultimately the purpose. A robot wrist power transmission for analysis model got the mass property through the approach to be the experimental. A bearing equivalent stiffness which supports the axis and a gear contact equivalent stiffness are determined by the simplicity analysis model compared the result of the experiment. We calculate the vibration tendency of the robot wrist power transmission by an analysis tool which is called the RecurDyn. We compared it with a signal analysis experiment's which a robot operation happens which is based on the ambient noise.
