  • The results of the analysis of the structural behavior of diagrid nodes that were subjected to cyclic loads such as wind and earthquakes was not fully understood due to difficulties in considering the welding type. In this study, diagrid nodes were tested to determine their behavior when they are subjected to seismic or wind loads. Five specimens were designed and fabricated. The corresponding test parameters were the welding type for each point and the length of the overlap of the side stiffener and the brace web. Tensile force was applied to one diagrid brace member, and compression force was applied to the other diagrid brace member. Cyclic loading was applied until the failure. The test showed that failures are due to axial stress from axial force and the additional bending moment of the two combined axial forces that have different directions. Tensile failure was observed from the tensile force, and local buckling was observed from the compressive force at the flange of the brace member. In addition, the welding type and the length overlap affected the initial stiffness, the yielding stress, and the energy absorption of the diagrid node.

  • The CSR rule was defined by IACS as the unified rule for a commercial ship like a bulk carrier and a tanker. It have been required more strict conditions for various parts like loading conditions, the local and girder strength, fatigue strength, FEM for the ship rule. It was changed in many parts of the ship rules. In this paper, the mid-parts of 17.5K DWT bulk carrier were optimized by the CSR rule. On the other hand, the modified artificial life algorithms with multi-object functions were developed for optimizing the scantling. It is possible to find multi-global optimum solutions in the multi-object functions. And it is faster and efficient than the artificial life algorithm. First, to be optimizing the scantling and the weight by CSR rule, that is calculated by the CSR rule. The next, the result is re-calculated by the modified artificial life algorithm with multi-object functions. The optimized results which are satisfied with the CSR rule like the minimum size and the thickness of stiffener and the minimum cost have been searched by the optimizing algorithm. And the results have been compared with the non-optimizing results.

  • The strong beam-to-column axis connections in steel structures have been studied for a long time to develop the strength and resistance of the connections. There have been very few studies, however, related to weak axis connections. Domestically, the bracket-type connection is commonly used in weak axis connections to elevate the efficiency of the constructions when the steel structures are constructed. The bracket-type connection detail has been applied moderately to weak axis connections. Therefore, the bracket-type connection in weak axis connections might be brittle and over-designed. The results of this study showed that the welding on the web of the column and the beam was unnecessary. In addition, this study confirmed that the new weak axis connection proposed in this study was superior to the previous connection in terms of strength and ductility.

  • Existing tubes for concrete filled tubular structure are made through welding of four plates irrespective, but the production performance is poor and special welding technique is needed to weld the internal or through diaphragm. Accordingly, We developed a welded built-up square steel tube having a welding lines and a stiffeners at location out of stress concentration. The welded built-up square steel tube occurred a interference with stiffeners at the internal or through diaphragm, therefore researches of a external diaphragm for welded built-up square CFT column connections are needed for the purpose of avoidance of a interfere with stiffeners. In this study we suggest a design formulation for external diaphragm of the welded built-up square CFT external diaphragm connections. Four specimens were manufactured for a experimental test, then we analyzed the behaviors of the specimens.

  • When precast concrete infill panels are connected to steel frames at discrete locations, interaction at the structural interface is neither complete nor absent. The contribution of precast concrete infill panels to the lateral stiffness and strength of steel frames can be significant depending on the quality, quantity and location of the discrete interface connections. This paper presents preliminary experimental and finite element results of an investigation into the composite behaviour of a square steel frame with a precast concrete infill panel subject to lateral loading. The panel is connected at the corners to the ends of the top and bottom beams. The Frame-to-Panel-Connection, FPC4 between steel beam and concrete panel consists of two parts. A T-section with five achor bars welded to the top of the flange is cast in at the panel corner at a forty five degree angle. The triangularly shaped web of the T-section is reinforced against local buckling with a stiffener plate. The second part consists of a triangular gusset plate which is welded to the beam flange. Two bolts acting in shear connect the gusset plate to the web of the T-section. This way the connection can act in tension or compression. Experimental pull-out tests on individual connections allowed their load deflection characteristics to be established. A full scale experiment was performed on a one-storey one-bay 3 by 3 m infilled frame structure which was horizontally loaded at the top. With the characteristics of the frame-to-panel connections obtained from the experiments on individual connections, finite element analyses were performed on the infilled frame structures taking geometric and material non-linear behaviour of the structural components into account. The finite element model yields reasonably accurate results. This allows the model to be used for further parametric studies.

  • The buckling assessment of plate panels described in common structural rules (CSR) is to be determined according to the buckling utilization factor with hull girder stresses calculated on net hull girder sectional properties. As the thickness requirement for the buckling assessment of plate panels is not explicitly given in CSR, a lot of time is spent to find the proper thickness of plate panels until reaching to an allowable buckling utilization factor. In this study, in order to reduce time and cost, the thickness requirement of plate panels satisfying buckling assessment was derived. The structural design system included with the thickness requirement for buckling assessment was developed. The system is called as Oil-tanker Automated Structural Investigation System (OASIS). The design result of longitudinal strength members using OASIS was verified by Nauticus Hull which is the rule scantling software of DNV. Finally, optimum design of a double hull tanker for the minimum weight using OASIS was presented.

  • To obtain tunnel concrete safety in case of fire, this study analyzed fire proof characteristics by fire proof method change, and the results are as follows. As a fire proof characteristics by RABT temperature heating curve, plain concrete experienced severe spalling by initial extremely high temperature. In view of fire proof method, in the cases of organic fiber mixing method and board method, spalling was prevented, and in the case of spray method, severe spalling of over 100mm depth occurred along with exposure of structural concrete including spray coat by heat stress, etc while metal lath, the stiffener, falls off. As for fire proof characteristics by RWS temperature heating curve, in case of organic fiber inclusion, concrete surface experienced fusion of within 5mm, while in the case of spray method, spray coat was severely spalled to a depth of over 100mm causing structural body concrete to expose its reinforcement, and also in the case of board method, board was fused by high temperature, causing structural body concrete be directly exposed to high temperature, which triggered overall fall-off phenomenon, so in such extraordinary high temperature heating condition, establishment of special fire proof measures is needed.

  • Extension of IFC data model for steel bridge members is proposed to represent detailed design information. First of all, the design data items and their representation method are classified by analyzing primary references such as design specification, structural calculation documents and shop drawings. Some of the classified items are enough to be represented by the existing IFC model. However, the need of additional model is noted to systematically represent the design information for other items such as stiffener, diaphragm, joint system, and shear connector. An inheritance relations and properties for added model are also defined. The application program based on the proposed data model is developed. In the end, by loading the application program on the AutoCAD 2002 program, end-users can input the design information of steel bridge members. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed data model and the program are verified by checking the section area, intervals, and interferences.

  • Recently, a great progress has been made in bridge construction technology through the development of high performance materials and new structural types. However, most of attention has been paid to the cast-in-place technologies and material cost saving. The cast-in-place method is always subject to some environmental damages in construction sites, which frequently causes conflicts with residents. To overcome the disadvantages, a lot of fabrication construction method was developed. Most fabrication construction methods developed up to now have been applied for superstructure of bridges. In contrast, such fabricable methods developed for substructures are extremely rare. A fabricated column using ICH CFT(Internally Confined Hollow CFT) column was developed in a series of previous researches. Included in the previous studies are design and construction methods for the precast segmental coping, the column-coping connection, the column-segment connection, column-foundation connection. In this paper, seismic performance of the fabricated ICH CFT columns was extensively investigated experimentally. Two test specimens were prepared depending on the connection methods of segments; one by mortar-grouting method and the other by reinforcement method using stiffeners.

  • The tube outward local buckling of Concrete-Filled Steel Tube (CFST) beam under high compression stress is still considered a critical problem, especially for steel tubes with a slender section compared to semi-compact and compact sections. In this study, the flexural performance of stiffened slender cold-formed square tube beams filled with normal concrete was investigated. Fourteen (14) simply supported CFST specimens were tested under static bending loads, stiffened with different shapes and numbers of steel stiffeners that were provided at the inner sides of the tubes. Additional finite element (FE) CFST models were developed to further investigate the influence of using internal stiffeners with varied thickness. The results of tests and FE analyses indicated that the onset of local buckling, that occurs at the top half of the stiffened CFST beam's cross-section at mid-span was substantially restricted to a smaller region. Generally, it was also observed that, due to increased steel area provided by the stiffeners, the bending capacity, flexural stiffness and energy absorption index of the stiffened beams were significantly improved. The average bending capacity and the initial flexural stiffness of the stiffened specimens for the various shapes, single stiffener situations have increased of about 25% and 39%, respectively. These improvements went up to 45% and 60%, for the double stiffeners situations. Moreover, the bending capacity and the flexural stiffness values obtained from the experimental tests and FE analyses validated well with the values computed from equations of the existing standards.
