Nonlinear dynamic analysis of spiral stiffened cylindrical shells rested on elastic foundation

  • In this paper, an analytical approach for the free vibration analysis of spiral stiffened functionally graded (SSFG) cylindrical shells is investigated. The SSFG shell is resting on linear and non-linear elastic foundation with damping force. The elastic foundation for the linear model is according to Winkler and Pasternak parameters and for the non-linear model, one cubic term is added. The material constitutive of the stiffeners is continuously changed through the thickness. Using the Galerkin method based on the von $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ equations and the smeared stiffeners technique, the non-linear vibration problem has been solved. The effects of different geometrical and material parameters on the free vibration response of SSFG cylindrical shells are adopted. The results show that the angles of stiffeners and elastic foundation parameters strongly effect on the natural frequencies of the SSFG cylindrical shell.

  • Ship structures are basically an assembly of plate elements and estimation load-carrying capacity or the ultimate strength is one of the most important criterion for estimated safety assessment and rational design on the ship structure. Also, Structural elements making up ship plated structures do not work separately against external load. One of the critical collapse events of a ship structure is the occurrence of overall buckling and plastic collapse of deck or bottom structure subjected to longitudinal bending. So, the deck and the bottom plates are reinforced by a number af longitudinal stiffeners to increase their strength and load-carrying capacity. For a rational design avoiding such a sudden collapse, it is very important to know the buckling and plastic behaviour or collapse pattern of the stiffened plate under axial compression. In this present study, to investigate effect af modeling range, the finite element method are used and their results are compared varying the analysis ranges. When making the FEA model, six types of structural modeling are adopted varying the cross section of stiffener. In the present paper, a series of FEM elastoplastic large deflection analyses is performed on a stiffened plate with fiat-bar, angle-bar and tee-bar stiffeners. When the applied axial loading, the influences of cross-sectional geometries on collapse behaviour are discussed. The purpose of the present study is examined to numerically calculate the characteristics of buckling and ultimate strength behavior according to the analysis method of ship's stiffened plate subject to axial loading.

A Study on the Measurement of Vibration Mode Shape using Holographic interferometry (홀로그래픽 간섭법을 이용한 진동모드의 계측에 관한 연구)

  • In this study the vibration behavior of the stiffened double cylinder was experimently analyzed. Due to the complex structure of the double cylinder the outside cylinder frequency responses to the exciting forces applied on various posi-tions were analyzed by using spectrum analyzer in conjunction with an accelerometer and the natural frequencies were obtained. The technique of time-averaged holographic interferometry is applied to study the vibration characteristics of outside cylinder with stiffening T frame. The experimental data showed that the T frame had salient effect of damping on the testing structure at most of resonances. however the experimental results also revealed interesting phenomenon. In addition it has been successfully demon-started that optical method such as holographic interferometry is well suited for the identification of mode shapes.   • The Rayleigh-Ritz procedure based on energy method is used to present analytically the natural frequencies and the critical buckling loads for four types of loading conditions: (1) uniaxial, (2) biaxial, (3) positive shear and (4) negative shear, of the rectangular, composite plates unidirectionally stiffened with box beam type stiffeners. In analysis the discrete stiffener theory is adopted to present the effect of stiffeners in the plate structure. The convergence study is presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the results. Contour plots of the vibrated and buckled mode shapes are shown for some examples. The effect of various parameters such as numbers, position, aspect ratio of stiffener and layer angle, aspect ratio of plate are focused.

Seismic performance of the thin-walled square CFST columns with lining steel tubes

  • This paper proposes an innovative thin-walled square concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) column with an octagonal/circular lining steel tube, in which the outer steel tube and the inner liner are fabricated independently of each other and connected by slot-weld or self-tapping screw connections. Twelve thin-walled square CFST columns were tested under quasi-static loading, considering the parameters of liner type, connection type between the square tube and liner, yield strength of steel tube, and the axial load ratio. The seismic performance of the thin-walled square CFST columns is effectively improved by the octagonal and circular liners, and all the liner-stiffened specimens showed an excellent ductile behavior with the ultimate draft ratios being much larger than 1/50 and the ductility coefficients being generally higher than 4.0. The energy dissipation abilities of the specimens with circular liners and self-tapping screw connections were superior to those with octagonal liner and slot-weld connections. Based on the test results, both the finite element (FE) and simplified theoretical models were established, considering the post-buckling strength of the thin-walled square steel tube and the confinement effect of the liners, and the proposed models well predicted the hysteretic behavior of the liner-stiffened specimens.

  • Effect of ring and straight stiffeners in the buckling as well as vibration characteristics of metal-ceramic functionally graded plates with cutout subjected to various uniaxial and localized in-plane compressive edge loadings was explored in the present work. In the current work, the distinguishing characteristics of metal and ceramic are merged in a single volume, and power law was used for estimating the material composition throughout thickness. Buckling and free vibration characteristics were studied initially for unstiffened Al/SiC functionally graded plates with cutout. Subsequently, the influence of cutout ratio on buckling load as well as natural frequency for different power law indices was discussed. The functionally graded plate was stiffened by three different stiffener patterns, namely; ring stiffener, straight stiffener, as well as a combination of the ring and the straight stiffener, to enhance the buckling as well as vibration characteristics. The effect of stiffener depth ratio for different stiffener patterns was also presented for functionally graded plates having different cutout sizes under various loading conditions. Such studies on functionally graded material have potential applications in a variety of technological fields including the aerospace and defense sectors.

  • This paper treats the vibration analysis of a simply supported rectangular plate stiffened with viscoelastic beams. The effect of viscoelastic beams on the vibration of the plate is analyzed by using Dirac delta function and the equation of motion can be expressed only one equation. The frequency equation is obtained by applying Laplace transformation. The effect of volumes, numben and aspect ratios of beam on the frequency of the plate is analyzed.

Yaw wind effect on flutter instability of four typical bridge decks

  • When evaluating flutter instability, it is often assumed that incident wind is normal to the longitudinal axis of a bridge and the flutter critical wind speed estimated from this direction is most unfavorable. However, the results obtained in this study via oblique sectional model tests of four typical types of bridge decks show that the lowest flutter critical wind speeds often occur in the yaw wind cases. The four types of bridge decks tested include a flat single-box deck, a flat ${\Pi}$-shaped thin-wall deck, a flat twin side-girder deck, and a truss-stiffened deck with and without a narrow central gap. The yaw wind effect could reduce the critical wind speed by about 6%, 2%, 8%, 7%, respectively, for the above four types of decks within a wind inclination angle range between $-3^{\circ}$ and $3^{\circ}$, and the yaw wind angles corresponding to the minimal critical wind speeds are between $4^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$. It was also found that the flutter critical wind speed varies in an undulate manner with the increase of yaw angle, and the variation pattern is largely dependent on both deck shape and wind inclination angle. Therefore, the cosine rule based on the mean wind decomposition is generally inapplicable to the estimation of flutter critical wind speed of long-span bridges under skew winds. The unfavorable effect of yaw wind on the flutter instability of long-span bridges should be taken into consideration seriously in the future practice, especially for supper-long span bridges in strong wind regions.

Mechanical behavior of elliptical concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns under axial loading

  • This paper presents a combined experimental, numerical, and analytical study on elliptical concrete-filled steel tubular (E-CFT) and rebar-stiffened elliptical concrete-filled steel tubular (RE-CFT) subjected to axial loading. ABAQUS was used to establish 3D finite element (FE) models for the composite columns and the FE results agreed well with the experimental results. It was found that the ultimate load-bearing capacity of RE-CFT stub columns was 20% higher than that of the E-CFT stub columns. Such improvement was attributed to the reinforcement effects from the internal rebar-stiffeners, which effectively enhanced the confinement effect on the core concrete, thereby significantly improved both the ultimate bearing capacity and the ductility of the E-CFT columns. Based on the results, equations were also established in this paper to predict the bearing capacities of E-CFT and RE-CFT stub columns under axial loading. The predicted results agreed well with both experimental and numerical results, and had much higher accuracy than other available methods.

Vibration Analysis of Stiffened Corrugated Composite Plates (보강된 적층 복합재료 주름판의 진동해석)

  • The free vibration characteristics of corrugated laminated composite plates with axial stiffeners is investigated using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The plate is stiffened by beams with open cross-section area. The equivalent homogenization model is used for the corrugated laminated composite plates. This homogenization model is treated a corrugated plate as an orthotropic plate that has different material properties in two perpendicular directions. The motion of equivalent plate is represented on the basis of the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) to account for the effect of rotary inertia and transverse shear deformation. Stiffeners are considered as discrete elements to predict the local vibration mode to be generated by the presence of stiffeners. To validate the proposed analytical approach, natural frequencies and vibration mode shapes from the analytical method are compared with those from the FEA by ANSYS.
