Objective: To analyze the fatigue resistance, debonding force, and failure type of fiber-reinforced composite, polyethylene ribbon-reinforced, and braided stainless steel wire lingual retainers in vitro. Methods: Roots of human mandibular central incisors were covered with silicone, mimicking the periodontal ligament, and embedded in polymethylmethacrylate. The specimens (N = 50), with two teeth each, were randomly divided into five groups (n = 10/group) according to the retainer materials: (1) Interlig (E-glass), (2) everStick Ortho (E-glass), (3) DentaPreg Splint (S2-glass), (4) Ribbond (polyethylene), and (5) Quad Cat wire (stainless steel). After the recommended adhesive procedures, the retainers were bonded to the teeth by using flowable composite resin (Tetric Flow). The teeth were subjected to 10,00,000 cyclic loads (8 Hz, 3 - 100 N, $45^{\circ}$ angle, under $37{\pm}3^{\circ}C$ water) at their incisoproximal contact, and debonding forces were measured with a universal testing machine (1 mm/min crosshead speed). Failure sites were examined under a stereomicroscope (${\times}40$ magnification). Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance. Results: All the specimens survived the cyclic loading. Their mean debonding forces were not significantly different (p > 0.05). The DentaPreg Splint group (80%) showed the highest incidence of complete adhesive debonding, followed by the Interlig group (60%). The everStick Ortho group (80%) presented predominantly partial adhesive debonding. The Quad Cat wire group (50%) presented overlying composite detachment. Conclusions: Cyclic loading did not cause debonding. The retainers presented similar debonding forces but different failure types. Braided stainless steel wire retainers presented the most repairable failure type.
In order to evaluate the fitness and the degree of rounding of porcelain margins in collarless metal cermic restorations, collarless metal ceramic restorations were fabricated with shoulder margins of 90 and 120 degress, each consisting of ten specimens, on master dies through the direct lift technique. And ten metal ceramic restorations with a shoulder 90 degrees were fabricated. All specimens were embedded in resin and sectioned longitudinally. The sections were observed under a stereomicroscope and photographed(${\times}$200). The labial marginal gap between the die and the porcelain margin were measured with a scale. The space between the porcelain margin and the die, that is formed from marginal rounding and cementation were calculated with a computer coordinating area curvimeter. The following results were obtained. 1. There was no statistical difference between the fitness of porcelain margin of collarless metal ceramic restorations and marginal fitness of metal ceramic restoration. 2. There was no statistical difference between a shoulder of 90 and 120 degrees in the fitness of porcelain margin of collarless metal ceramic resorations. 3. Collarless metal ceramic restorations with a shoulder of 90 degrees and 120 degrees showed significantly more labial marginal rounding than metal ceramic restorations. 4. There was no statistical difference between a shoulder of 90 and 120 degrees in rounding of porcelain margin of collarless metal ceramic restorations. According to the results, rounding of porcelain margins can be observed in collarless metal ceramic restorations. Thus, there is a need for improvement in dental materials and techniques to minimize this problem, Furthermore, care should be exercised during the clinical procedure.

PURPOSE. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the amount of marginal gap with two different substructure materials using identical margin preparations. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty stainless steel models with a chamfer were prepared with a CNC device. Marginal gap measurements of the galvano copings on these stainless steel models and Co-Cr copings obtained by a laser-sintering method were made with a stereomicroscope device before and after the cementation process and surface properties were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A dependent t-test was used to compare the mean of the two groups for normally distributed data, and two-way variance analysis was used for more than two data sets. Pearson's correlation analysis was also performed to assess relationships between variables. RESULTS. According to the results obtained, the marginal gap in the galvano copings before cementation was measured as, on average, $24.47{\pm}5.82{\mu}m$ before and $35.11{\pm}6.52{\mu}m$ after cementation; in the laser-sintered Co-Cr structure, it was, on average, $60.45{\pm}8.87{\mu}m$ before and $69.33{\pm}9.03{\mu}m$ after cementation. A highly significant difference (P<.001) was found in marginal gap measurements of galvano copings and a significant difference (P<.05) was found in marginal gap measurements of the laser-sintered Co-Cr copings. According to the SEM examination, surface properties of laser sintered Co-Cr copings showed rougher structure than galvano copings. The galvano copings showed a very smooth surface. CONCLUSION. Marginal gaps values of both groups before and after cementation were within the clinically acceptable level. The smallest marginal gaps occurred with the use of galvano copings.
PURPOSE. Debonding of a composite resin core of the fiber post often occurs at the interface between these two materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different surface treatment methods on bond strength between fiber posts and composite core. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Sixty-four fiber posts were picked in two groups (Hetco and Exacto). Each group was further divided into four subgroups using different surface treatments: 1) silanization; 2) sandblasting; 3) Treatment with 24% $H_2O_2$, and 4) no treatment (control group). A cylindrical plexiglass matrix was placed around the post and filled with the core resin composite. Specimens were stored in 5000 thermal cycles between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$. Tensile bond strength (TBS) test and evaluation using stereomicroscope were performed on the specimen and the data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA, Post Hoc Scheffe tests and Fisher's Exact Test (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. There was a significant difference between the effect of different surface treatments on TBS ($P$ <.001) but different brands of post ($P$=.743) and interaction between the brand of post and surface treatment ($P$=.922) had no significant effect on TBS. Both silanization and sandblasting improved the bonding strength of fiber posts to composite resin core, but there were not any significant differences between these groups and control group. CONCLUSION. There was not any significant difference between two brands of fiber posts that had been used in this study. Although silanization and sandblasting can improve the TBS, there was not any significant differences between surface treatments used.
Objective: We took intravascular threadlike structures from rat aortas to investigate their histological characteristics consistent with the intravascular Bonghan duct. Methods: Gomori s silver impregnation method, in addition to routine hematoxylin and eosin staining, was applied to demonstrate the characteristic feature of the intravascular threadlike structures. Results: These two staining methods clearly showed that the intravascular threadlike structures had unique features of argyrophilic reticular fibers and heavily stained oval or rod-shaped nuclei in them. Conclusion: The results are strong evidences for identifying threadlike structure as the intravascular Bonghan duct.
The present study was undertaken to identify the species of nematodes and determine infection state of small intestinal nematodes from dogs in Taegu area. One hundred and eleven healthy dogs which were 8 months old or more were examined by means of autopsy from September to November, 1993. All of the worms in small intestine were collected and preserved in 10% formalin solution. The worms were cleared in the lactophenol solution and examined by stereomicroscope and lightmicroscope. The result obtained were summarized as follows : Fifty three dogs(47.7%) out of the 111 experimental dogs were infected with small intestinal nematodes. Hookworm infection was recognized in 30(27.7%) dogs. All of the hookworms were identified morphologically as Ancylostoma caninum which had 3 pairs of ventral teeth, a pair of triangular dorsal teeth and a pair of centrolateral teeth. No Uncinaria stenocephala infection was detectable. Roundworm infection was recognized in 37(33.3%) dogs. Twenty one(18.9%) dogs were infected with Toxascaris leonina which had characteristic dorsal lips, paired spicules and a simple tail without process. The individual worm burden of the infected dogs ranged from one to 361 with mean of 25.5%. Among them 0~358(mean $17.8{\pm}30.66$) were Ancylostoma caninum, 0~18(mean $1.6{\pm}3.44$) were Toxocara canis and 0~60(mean $6.0{\pm}12.05$) were Toxascaris leonina. Single infection with Ancylostoma caninum, Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina were observed in 16(14.4%) dogs, in 9(8.1%) dogs, and in 11(9.9%) dogs respectively. Double infection with Ancylostoma caninum plus Toxascaris leonina and Toxocara canis plus Toxascaris leonina occurred in 5(0.5%) and in 3(2.7%) dogs respectively. Triple infection with Ancylostoma caninum plus Toxocara canis plus Toxascaris leonina occurred in 7(6.3%) dogs.
The present study aimed at determining the effective dose of Folltropin, a follicle timulating hormone (FSH), on superovulation in indigenous cows of Bangladesh. Fifteen regularly cycling 5~7 years old dry cows, weighing 200~250 kg with 2.5~3.0 body condition scores (BCS) were divided into three groups (n=5). Individual groups were superovulated with 100, 200 or 300 mg of Folltropin per animal. The superovulation treatment was initiated at Day 10 or Day 11 of the estrous cycle (Day 0=day of estrus). Alfaprostol (6 mg) was injected to each cow 72 h after the initiation of superovulation treatment to induce eestrus. After confirming standing estrus, the cows were inseminated 2~3 times, 12 h apart, depending on the duration of estrus. At Day 6 or Day 7, individual horns of the uterus were flushed with 150~200 $m\ell$ of phosphate buffered saline supplemented with BSA (0.2%), penicillin (100 IU/$m\ell$) and streptomycin (100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$) using a two-way foley catheter. The embryos were concentrated, removing the excess medium through an embryo filter, and identified under a stereomicroscope. The identified embryos were collected, washed four times, evaluated and graded as excellent, good, fair or poor. The excellent, good and fair embryos were considered as transferable quality embryos. The mean (range). numbers of embryos collected vs. transferable quality embryos far 100, 200 and 300 mg of Folltropin were 4.5 (1~10) vs. 3.5 (1~8); 2.5 (1~4) vs. 1 (0~2) and 0.0 (0~0) vs. 0.0 (0~0), respectively, Folltropin at a dose of 100 or 200 mg produced suitable ovarian stimulation for superovulation in indigenous zebu cows of Bangladesh. A dose of 300 mg or more Folltropin consistently caused preovulatory corpora lutea formation in the ovaries and resulted in zero embryo recovery.
It is necessary to measure the length of a root canal in order to attain a satisfactory prognosis after root canal therapy. There are several methods for determining root canal length, such as tactile sensation by the dental practitioner, the utilization of x-ray film, and electronic root canal measurement. Among these, the electrical measurement methods, in which the impedence between the oral mucous membrane and periodontal membrane is determined, have advantages of simplicity and accuracy. During root canal treatment, the root canal contains a solution of high electrical conductivity such as pus, blood, sodium hypochlorite and so on. Recently a new electronic root canal measurement device of frequency-dependent type has been developed, which is capable of measuring the length of root canal under moist conditions. Endex and Root ZX, which are frequency-dependent type, were evaluated for accuracy of measuring root canal length in vivo by stereomicroscope. The result were as follows ; 1. 82.5% of Endex and 87.5% of Root ZX measured in the range of ${\pm}0.5$ mm from the apical foramen and both showed 57.5 % in the range of 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm. 2. Endex showed significantly higher accuracy in vital teeth than nonvital teeth(p<0.05). But in case of Root ZX, there was no significant difference between vital and nonvital teeth. 3. As a result of this study, there was no significant difference in accuracy between Endex and Root ZX, and both devices showed file passes the apical foramen in more than half of the cases, and it is thought that this must be considered clinically.
Recently, there have been attempts to obstruct the dentinal tubules and remove the smear layer by way of laser irradiation in the root canal during endodontic treatment. This treatment was designed to make the root canal to be nonporous. Using 33 extracted single rooted teeth, 30 teeth were divided into 3 groups (10 each), and 3 teeth were used as samples for SEM. Using Nd : YAG laser, the control group was not irradiated, experimental group l(1W group) was irradiated with 1W, 15pps, 15sec., 3 times, 6.7mJ and experimental group 2(3W group) was irradiated with 3W, 15pps, 15sec., 3 times 20mJ. Thereafter the roots were immersed in methylene blue for 8 hours, and the dye infiltration pattern was observed under stereomicroscope and canal wall surface change was observed under SEM. The results are as following ; 1. As a result of evaluating the dye infiltration rate of the apical and middle 1/3, there was significant difference between control group and 1W group, control group and 3W group and there was no significant difference between 1 W group and 3W group. 2. In each group, as a result of comparing the dye infiltration rate of the apical and middle 1/3, there was no significant difference in control and 1W group but significant difference in 3W group. 3. In the control group smear layer was scarecely found and many dentinal tubules were found to be open. 4. In the 1W group, the number of dentinal tubules were decreased and gradual changes of the dentin surface could be seen and 3W group, almost no dentinal tubules could be found and the dentin surface was changed a little more and showed signs of partial fusion.
Objectives : Primo vascular system is known to new circulatory system and suggested as a anatomical structure of meridian system. Primo-vessels are present throughout the whole body. The purpose of this study is to identify primo tissues taken from falciform ligament and to compare with organ surface primo tissue, blood vessel and lymph vessel. Methods : Male Sprague-Dawley rats (8weeks old, 250~320g) used for this study. The medial line of the abdomen was dissected and searched for primo tissues in falciform ligament and on the internal organs using stereomicroscope. We performed serial cross section and histological investigations. The tissues were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Masson's trichrome. Results : 1. The primo tissues attached on the falciform ligament had white color and length of 5~8mm. 2. We could observe primo tissues are classified with ligament tissues. 3. Histologically, primo tissue on falciform ligament and organ surface primo tissue could be considered same tissue. Conclusions : In this study, we observed primo tissue discovered on the falciform ligament. And we also histologically compared such discovered primo tissue with organ surface primo tissue. Consequently, we could consider that two tissues have histological similarity and possibility of connection in one network system.
