  • A chemical examination of the stems of Sapium japonicum PAX et $H_{OFFM}$ (Euphorbiaceae) has led to the isolation of seven phenolic compounds. On the basis of UV, IR, MS, and NMR spectral data and the chemical reaction, the structures of these compounds were identified as gallic acid (1), ellagic acid (2), 3,3'-di-O-methylellagic acid (3), $4-O-({\beta}-D-xylopyranosyl)-3,3'-di-O-methylellagic$ acid (4), $4-O-({\alpha}-D-arabinofuranosyl)-3,3'-di-O-methylellagic$ acid (5), isoquercitrin (6), and geraniin (7).

  • Two triterpenoid saponine were isolated from the stems of Acer ginnala Maxim. The structures of triterpenoid saponins were established as ilexoside O, $3-O-{\alpha}-L- rhamnopyranosyl(1{\rightarrow}2)-{\beta}-D-glucopyranosyl(1{\rightarrow}2)-{\beta}-D-xylopyranosyl-pubescenolic$ acid 28-{\beta}-D-glucopyranosyl$ ester(1) and ilexoside K, $3-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranosyl(1{\rightarrow}2)-{\beta}-D-xylopyranosyl-pubes-cenolic$ acid $28-{\beta}-D-glucopyranosyl$ ester(2). Their chemical structures have been elucidated on the basis of spectral methods.

  • Saponin was distributed in all tissues of Phytolacca americana and P. esculenta. Phytolaccoside E was a major saponin, but the callus tissues induced from stems of P. americana contained phytolaccoside B as a major component. Saponin contents in leaves and stems were almost similar to those in roots. Two unknown compounds, $C_{32}H_{50}O_{4}$ (triterpenoid) and $C_{18}H_{22}O_{5}{\cdot}H_2O$ (polyphenol) were isolated from seeds of both plant.

  • Anthracnose symptoms were frequently found on stems of Indian fig cactus in Cheju island of Korea in 1998 and 1999. Typical symptoms were gray to black dry rot of stems with concentric arrays of dot-like spots. A Glomerella sp. or a Colletotrichum sp. was frequently isolated from the symptoms, both of which were identified as Glomerella cingulata and its anamorph, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. Out of 31 isolates obtained from the symptoms, 12 isolates were the anamorph producing only conidia, four isolates the telemorph producing only ascospores, and 15 isolates the holomorph producing both spores on potato dextrose agar. Stem rots similar to the original anthracnose symptoms were induced by wound inoculation of conidia and ascospores but not by non-wound inoculation. The anamorphic isolates caused more extensive stem rot than the telemorphic and holomorphic ones.

  • Effective alginate extraction from waste-brown seaweeds was studied. The waste-brown seaweeds almost consist of stems of seaweeds. Alginate could be obtained from the stems as well as leaves of seaweed. Ultrasonic vibration(47kHz) facilitated filtering step in the alginate extraction process. Among various alkalies for alginate extraction, $NaHCO_3$ was most appropriate concerning use of dealginates. The yield of alginate extraction using $NaHCO_3$ 2wt% solution was 19.3% at $60^{\circ}C$. The dealginates from $NaHCO_3$-extraction process have been found most suitable food for red-worms.

Raf. and their structures were identified based on LC-MS and NMR data.

  • The cells of Rubia cordifolia var. pratensis were transformed by Agrobactrium tumefaciens strain 11157. Surface-sterilized young leaves and stems of the plants were cocultivated with bacterial suspensions. Crown galls induced from stems were cultured with variation of culturing conditions and compared with untransformed cells. The growth rates and production of anthraquinone pigments of cells were remarkably improved by transformation. Furthermore, hairy roots were induced by inoculation or cocultivation with Agrobacterium rhizogenes strains.

  • A Fusarium species was isolated from stems of cactus(Hylocereus trigonus) showing rot symptoms at Koyang, Kyonggi province in 1997. This pathogen was identified as Fusarium oxysporum based on mycological characteristics. The rot symptom appeared at the soil line and roughly circular lesions, 1∼3 mm in diameter, appeared on basal stems. The pathogen formed both microconidia and macroconidia. Microconidia were formed abundantly in false-heads on short monophialides, oval to kidney-shaped. Macroconidia were slightly sickle-shaped, 3∼5-septated with an attenuated apical cell and a foot-shaped basal cell. Colony color on PDA was white, peach or purple. Chlamydospores were formed abundantly on PDA. The pathogen was able to cause stem rot symptoms to cactus by wound inoculation as well as non-wound inoculation.

  • Anthracnose of statice (Limonium sp. var. Misty Blue and L. sinuatum Mill. cv. Early Blue) occurred up to 20% in vinyl-houses at Buan, Imsil and Namwon from July to November, 1993. All isolates from the anthracnose symptoms were identified as Glomerella cingulata (Stonem.) Spauld. & Schrenk and its anamorph was Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Pens.) Sacc. Pathogenicity of the isolates was ascertained on the statice host by artificial inoculation. The symptoms on leaves appeared as circular brown spots in early stage and developed to zonate spots. The spot aggregated and diseased leaves were blighted. The symptom also developed on the stems of severely infected plants and the infected branches were blighted. A lots of acervuli developed on the lesions of stems. Acervuli on necrotic lesions were setose, rounded and elongated. Setae variable in length, 1~4 septate, brown, slightly swollen at the base and tapered to the apex on which conidia were occasionally borned. Statice was revealed as the new host of G. cingulata.

  • Monobloc technology Provides a homogeneous material along the complete tubular shaft without any discontinuity between the interconnecting tube and the stems as is found when the tubes and stems have been Joined by welding. Cold tube drawing is a technique that can be applied for manufacturing of those monobloc tubular shafts with several advantages such as high productivity and cost reduction. The present study is concerned with the investigation about the process parameters related with tool configuration. In order to obtain successfully formed SIS(Steering Input Shaft) without any defects, advanced design of mandrel is presented and analyzed by the FEM and ductile fracture criterion in this paper.
