  • Selective laser melting (SLM), one of the most widely used powder bed fusion (PBF) additive manufacturing (AM) technology, enables the fabrication of customized metallic parts with complex geometry by layer-by-layer fashion. However, SLM inherently poses several problems such as the discontinuities in the molten track and the steep temperature gradient resulting in a high degree of residual stress. To avoid such defects, thisstudy proposes a temperature thread multiscale model of SLM for the evaluation of the process at different scales. In microscale melt pool analysis, the laser beam parameters were evaluated based on the predicted melt pool morphology to check for lack-of-fusion or keyhole defects. The analysis results at microscale were then used to build an equivalent body heat flux model to obtain the residual stress distribution and the part distortions at the macroscale (part level). To identify the source of uneven heat dissipation, a liquid lifetime contour at macroscale was investigated. The predicted distortion was also experimentally validated showing a good agreement with the experimental measurement.

  • In order to evaluate the TOPMODEL's prediction ability for spatial distribution of water table depths, two major assumptions and governing equation of water table depth are tested. For the test, data of hydrological observations are used and a soil survey is made in the steep hillslope with thin soils. Responses of water table and hydraulic properties of soil are coincident with two major assumptions of the TOPMODEL's such as water table gradient parallel to the local topographical slope and exponential decline in transmissivity with depths. Soil texture and the decline rate of transmissivity(f) we homogeneous in space at the 0∼0.3m depths of the soil of the hillslope, but they are heterogeneous in space below its 0.3m depths due to the vertical change of soil texture and the ‘f’. It is shown that the TOPMODEL's equation can be used for simulating distribution of water table depth at the depths with uniform values of the 'f'.

  • BACKGROUND: In this review paper, the effects of surface cover (SCV), vegetative filter strip (VFS), and vegetated ridge (VRD) on the pollutant runoff from steep-sloping uplands were analyzed to compare the pollutant reduction efficiency in runoff ($PRE_{runoff}$) of the practices and to investigate how slope and rainfall parameters affect the $PRE_{runoff}$. METHODS AND RESULTS: The $PRE_{runoff}$ of SCV, VFS, and VRD for pollutants including suspended solids and biological oxygen demand was compared by analysis of variance. The effect of slope and rainfall parameters on the $PRE_{runoff}$ was explored by either mean comparison or regression analysis. It was found that the $PRE_{runoff}$ differs with the practices due to different pollutant reduction mechanisms of the practices. Though the $PRE_{runoff}$ was likely to be affected by site condition such as slope and rainfall (amount and intensity), more comprehensive understanding was not possible due to the limited data set. CONCLUSION: The $PRE_{runoff}$ of SCV, VFS, and VRD differed due to the distinctive mechanisms of pollutant removal of the practices. It is necessary to accumulate experimental data across a variety of gradient of slope and rainfall for comprehensive understanding of the effects of the practices on pollutant runoff from steep-sloping uplands.

  • To improve the running safety of a tram operating on a concrete embedded track, a bogie, the core system of the tram, was developed and fabricated. After it was integrated with the prototype car body, a short distance track with a sharp curve and steep gradient was constructed for the test operation. A formula to check the interference of the wheel flange with the track during running was proposed. Based on the results provided by the formula, the track was designed. Another simple formula was derived to estimate the derailment quotient and the wheel unloading ratio. During running on the track, the acceleration of the car body was measured and the interface status between the wheel and the track was monitored by a video system. According to the results calculated by these simple formulas, the derailment quotient and wheel unloading ratio were estimated to be within the safety criteria. In the actual test, no derailment occurred and the measured acceleration satisfied the criteria. Also, there was no interference between the wheel and track. The video monitoring results showed no signs of derailment, such as the climbing of the wheel. The pinion in the center showed good running safety, contacting smoothly with the rack. The measurements of environmental noise proved that the criteria were satisfied.

  • The morphometric characteristics of 13 alluvial fans in the southern parts of the Korean Peninsula are studied and relationships between their distributions and causes are discussed by comparing them with 690 alluvial fans in Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines. The relationships between the surface gradient of alluvial fans and source basin area, the surface gradient and the relief ratio of the source basin, and the source basin area and the relief ratio were investigated. The alluvial fans in South Korea have typical characteristics of the Asian fans, although their frequency and density are relatively low, and the size and the relief ratio of their source basins are relatively small and steep, respectively. Moreover 36 major Korean river basins without alluvial fans tend to have lower altitude and relief ratios. Contrary to the argument by Blair and McPherson, the natural depositional gaps on the gradient of alluvial fans were not found. The Gyeongju alluvial fan is probably a fluvial fan with gentle gradient, whereas the other Korean fans seem to be debris-flow related on the base of their gradients.

  • Most steep slope failures tend to take place in geographically unstable areas. Mt. Baekdusan is known as a potentially active volcano in a typical mountainous terrain. This study prepared a digital elevation model of Mt. Baekdusan area and created a hazard map based on topographical factors and structural lineament analysis. Factors used in vulnerability analysis included geographical data involving aspect and slope distribution, as well as contributory area of upslope, tangential gradient curvature, profile gradient curvature, and the distribution of wetness index among the elements that comprise topography. In addition, the stability analysis was conducted based on the lineament intensity map. Concerning the disaster vulnerability of Mt. Baekdusan region, the south and south west area of Mt. Baekdusan has a highest risk of disaster (grade 4-5) while the risk level decreases in the north eastern region.

  • Influence of applied electric field on the low temperature degradation of 3 mol% YaO3 stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals(3Y-TZP) was investigated using X-ray diffractometry of specimens aged under the dc field of 1.1 kV/mm in silicone oil both of 12$0^{\circ}C$-21$0^{\circ}C$. After the aging, the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation was observed only on the specimen surface of 3Y-TZP faced to the anode. This indicated that the surface was overcrowded with oxygen ions as a result of diffusion of oxygen vacancies toward the cathode-sided surface. To elucidate an influence of the applying time of the electric field on the extent of the degradation of 3Y-TZP in air, specimens were aged fore 0-2 hours under the electric field in the oil bath of 12$0^{\circ}C$ and then subsequently aged for 3h at 22$0^{\circ}C$ in air. The longer the specimens were aged under the field, the more extensive the transformation to the monoclinic phase was on the specimen surface faced to the cathode, probably originated from a high diffusion rate of oxygen ions due to a steep oxygen vacancy concentration gradient.

  • A computational study of evaluation of current turbulence models is performed for a better prediction of thermal stratification in an upper plenum of a liquid metal reactor. The turbulence models tested in the present study are the two-layer model, the shear stress transport (SST) model, the v2-f model and the elliptic blending mode(EBM). The performances of the turbulence models are evaluated by applying them to the thermal stratification experiment conducted at JNC (Japan Nuclear Corporation). The algebraic flux model is used for treating the turbulent heat flux for the two-layer model and the SST model, and there exist little differences between the two turbulence models in predicting the temporal variation of temperature. The v2-f model and the elliptic blending model better predict the steep gradient of temperature at the interface of thermal stratification, and the v2-f model and elliptic blending model predict properly the oscillation of the ensemble-averaged temperature. In general the overall performance of the elliptic blending model is better than the v2-f model in the prediction of the amplitude and frequency of the temperature oscillation.

  • In this study, the metallurgical analysis and mechanical property measurement have been performed to investigate the effect of long-term thermal aging on the microstructural evolution in the fusion boundary region between weld metal and low alloy steel in dissimilar metal welds. A representative dissimilar weld mock-up made of Alloy 690-Alloy 152-A533 Gr. B was fabricated and aged at $450^{\circ}C$ for 2,750 hours. The microstructural characterization was conducted mainly near in a weld root region by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. And the mechanical properties were measured with Vickers microhardness test and nanoindentation method. A steep gradient was shown in the chemical composition profile across the interface between A533 Gr. B and Alloy 152. Type-II boundaries were found in weld side of DMW and the hardness was the highest at the narrow zone between Type-II boundary and fusion boundary.
