A Study for Structural Capacity Evaluation of Embedded Steel Plate Connected with Prestressed Concrete Beam to Build Large Space Educational Facilities (대공간 교육시설 축조를 위한 프리스트레스트 보에 사용되는 접합 강재의 성능평가에 대한 연구)

  • An experimental study to evaluate structural capacity of an embedded plate connected with prestressed concrete beam was performed. Embedded steel plates and prestressed concrete beam were connected with stud-bolts at the ends of concrete beam specimens. About 1,000 kN concentrated load was applied at 450mm away from the end of beam specimen. A 3,000 kN capacity static Oil-jack was used to direct concentrated load. The maximum strain of stud-bolt recorded $90{\times}10^{-6}$(mm/mm) and wide width cracks were not founded. Any falling failures of concrete and large deformations were not founded either between steel plate and prestressed concrete specimen. As a result, construction performance can be improved using this embedded steel plate connection system apply to large space educational facilities.

Shear transfer mechanisms in composite columns: an experimental study

  • In the design of concrete filled composite columns, it is assumed that the load transfer between the steel tube and concrete core has to be achieved by the natural bond. However, it is important to investigate the mechanisms of shear transfer due to the possibility of steel-concrete interface separation. This paper deals with the contribution of headed stud bolt shear connectors and angles to improve the shear resistance of the steel-concrete interface using push-out tests. In order to determine the influence of the shear connectors, altogether three specimens of concrete filled composite column were tested: one without mechanical shear connectors, one with four stud bolt shear connectors and one with four angles. The experimental results showed the mechanisms of shear transfer and also the contribution of the angles and stud bolts to the shear resistance and the force transfer capacity.

Patch Plate Repair Method for Steel Structures Combining Adhesives and Stud Bolts

  • Recently, a repair method by bonding patch plates is being applied to corroded steel structures. However, one of the issues of patch plate bonding repair is the brittle debonding of the patch plates. Generally, when the delamination of the patch plates occurs, the composite effect acting between the steel members and patch plates abruptly decreases. Therefore, to prevent the brittle debonding of the patch plates, a repair method combining an adhesive and stud bolts is proposed. Till date, tensile and compressive tests have been performed for the proposed method. In this study, plate bending tests were conducted to verify the effectiveness of this method under bending conditions. Furthermore, two types of epoxy resin-based adhesives were prepared to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method with different adhesive properties. The test results show that the proposed method is able to prevent the brittle debonding of the patch plates in the case of both epoxy resins.

  • GMAW and GTAW processes have been used for welding of equipment mounting pads during decades. For improving the mobility and survivability of KWV(Korean Wheeled Vehicle), various types of equipment are required and numbers of pads for welding were increased. In this research, for improving productivity of mounting pads welding process, new technology of stud welding was studied. In this study, mechanical properties of stud weldment were investigated to compare with those of GMAW weldment. Also, research of stud weldment durability was carried out and proved its fatigue strength under the condition of KWV's 32,000 km load profile.

  • Empirical relationships that capture the nonlinear behavior of headed steel shear stud anchors have been derived from standard push out tests, where the specimens are comprised of large wide flanged steel sections attached to flat concrete slabs via the anchors. However, many composite systems used in practice utilize much smaller steel members and/or steel decking as part of the slab system. Composite open web steel joist systems generally include both of these elements and consequently the nonlinear performance ofthe anchor is not accurately represented by existing models. In this paper, a new empirical relation is presented for open web steel joist systems based on experimental results from a modified push out test that more realistically represent a composite open web steel joist system. The methodology for obtaining the proposed nonlinear function where the response of the system is characterized by two parameters(α and β) is presented. The two-step process for obtaining the two parameters is described and the empirical relation is calibrated with the experimental data. In comparison with existing expressions, the new proposal herein more accurately predicts the high initialstiffness of the system and overall nonlinear system performance.

Tensile Load Transmission Capacity of H-shaped Beam by Stud Connectors (스터드 커넥터로 연결된 H형강보의 인장하중 전달성능)

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate tensile load transmission capacity of H-shaped beam about design load by stud connector. The basic test of stud connecter was conducted and two specimens of full-scale size were tested under monotonic tensile loading condition. The parameter of tests is the size of the H-shaped beams. The results show that tensile load transmission capacity of H-shape beam about design load by stud connectors is excellent observing to the design code of steel structures of Architectural Institute of Korea.

  • The headed studs used extensively for steel-composite construction are specified as SS400 in the current Korean Standard specification considering the welding condition. And the corresponding equation for the shear force calculation is limited for the use of compression strength of concrete below $300kgf/cm^2$. However, it is expected that the high strengthening and precasting of both steel and concrete due to the necessity of shear connector or other connecting material for the combination of steel and concrete. Therefore, the experimental results obtained during the development process of high strength stud for the connection of high strength concrete and the steel member are reported in this paper. Also the effectiveness of newly developed shear connector using pipe(pipe stud) to increase the stiffness of a stud is verified by comparing both the stiffness and the strength with common stud bolt through the welding ability, mechanical characteristics and experimental investigation.

Full-scale experimental evaluation of a panelized brick veneer wall system under simulated wind loading

  • Brick veneer over steel stud backup wall is lighter and easier to construct compared to brick veneer over concrete masonry backup wall. However, due to the relatively low stiffness of the steel stud backup, the brick veneer tends to crack under wind load. This paper briefly introduces a new panelized brick veneer with steel frame backup wall system that is developed to potentially address this problem. The experimental study of the performance of this system under simulated wind loading is discussed in detail. The test setup details and the test specimens are introduced, results of major interests are presented, and performance of the new system is evaluated based on the test results.

  • Finite element analysis using ANSYS program conducted to evaluate the tensile behavior of the connection between reinforced concrete and steel members is presented in this paper. It is assumed that there is a complete bond between head part of the stud and concrete. However, the surface of the column area of stud is separated from the concrete to stop the stress transmission between those. In case of using reinforcement connectors such as C or U type, the interface between concrete and reinforcement is idealized to have strong adhesion. Four concrete-steel specimens which are connected by stud connector or reinforcement connectors are compared and analyzed From the comparison, it was shown that the connection between concrete and steel could be predicted by using the modeling technique used in this paper.

  • An investigation on the structural behavior of cold-formed steel lipped C-section stud for interior walls or partitions was carried out. This experimental research was carried out to study the ultimate and service load capacity of stud assemblies that are subjected to lateral loads. Each test specimen consisted of three or four lipped C-section studs and two C-section tracks that restrained both ends. The major factors considered in this experiment were the perforation on the web, the connection of the bridge channel and the special clip. The effect of the plaster board and the ply wood, which were attached to the tension flange on the flexural strength, was also investigated. Thereafter, the test strength capacities were compared with the nominal strength, based on the AISI Specifications (1996).
