New PHC piles, where short steel pipes are attached to the pile toe, are developed to increase the base load capacity of bored pre-cast piles embedded in weathered rock. In this study, new bored pre-cast piles using the new PHC piles are installed at 7 test sites with different soil conditions, and static and dynamic pile load tests are performed to investigate quantitative characteristics on the base load capacity of new bored pre-cast piles. In addition, based on the static pile load test results, a new empirical equation for estimating the base load capacity of new bored pre-cast piles is proposed. A comparison between predicted and measured base load capacities shows that the proposed empirical equation produces conservative predictions for the new bored pre-cast piles. However, the existing design criterion significantly underestimates the base load capacity of new bored pre-cast piles.
Hollow prestressed concrete filled steel tube (HCFT) piles, which compose hollow PHC piles inside thin wall steel tubes, are developed. In order to investigate the strength characteristics of HCFT piles, flexural and shear tests were conducted on HCFT piles as well as PHC and steel pipe piles with the same diameter. Results of the test program showed that the flexural strength of HCFT piles was 2.88 and 1.19 times those of ICP and steel pipe piles with thickness of 12 mm, respectively, and its shear strength was 2.40 times that of steel pipe piles. The shear key attached to the inside of thin wall steel tube did not affect the flexural behavior of HCFT piles. It was also observed that the flexural strengths of HCFT piles with diameters of 450 and 500 mm were 35 to 63% higher than the sum of the flexural strengths of its components, respectively, because the strength of concrete in compressive zone increased by confining effect of thin wall steel tube on concrete. HCFT piles used as upper piles in hybrid composite piles might decrease the lateral displacement and increase the structural safety of structures subjected to lateral loads.
Pile load tests were carried out to investigate the contribution of the pile cap to the carrying capacity of a pile group and load transfer characteristics of piles in the group. A group of 24 piles$(4 \times6 array)$ of 92.5mm diameter steel pipe were installed to the depth of 3m fron the ground surface, the top of weathered rock. A maximum load of 320ton was applied to the pile cap, $1.5\times2.3m$, in contact with the ground surface. At the maximum load of 320ton, the pile cap has carried 22% of the total load. Average ultimate capacity of pile in the pile group was estimated to be 16.4ton, substantially higher than that of single pile, installed at the corner and tested before pile cap construction. For the same magnitude of settlement, the pile in the center carried less load than the pile at the perimeter due to strain superposition effect. Piles in the group showed almost constant contribution(approx. 60%) of side friction to the total capacity for all of the loading stages, while that of single pile decreased from 82% to 65%.
In our country, in the case of traditional design of pile foundations, only a design depending on end bearing has been performed. However, through the load transfer measurement data that have been carried out for in-situ piles, it was known that skin frictional force was mobilized greatly. In this study, through the analysis of the load transfer test cases of driven steel pipe piles and large-diameter drilled shafts, load bearing aspects of pile foundation depending on pile construction methods and pile load test methods were established. The average sharing ratios of skin frictional force were independent of pile types, pile load test methods, relative pile lengths, pile diameters and soil types. Because the average sharing ratios were over 50%, the case pile foundations mostly behaved as a friction pile and the extremely partial case pile foundation behaved as a combined load bearing pile.

It is very difficult to accomplish load tests of piles with large diameter constructed on the offshore area, because of requirement for large scaled loading equipment and bad testing conditions. Therefore, so far in many cases pile driving dynamic formulas have applied to quality control, and recently dynamic load test method is widely used for confirming bearing capacities of such piles. However, in cases of piles with very large diameter about 2,500mm, it is nearly impossible for regular type load test methods of piles such as static and dynamic to apply owing to very large design load. This is case studies of load tests such as modified static and dynamic load tests of piles and point load tests of rock samples for estimating rational allowable bearing capacity of very large diameter piles constructed on the marine area.
This paper shows the results of a series of model bests on the behavior of single steel pipe pile which is subjected to lateral load in Nak-dong river sand. The purpose of the present paper is to estimate the effect of Non -homogeneous soil, constraint condition of pile head, lateral load velocity, relative density of soil, embedded pile length, and flexural stiffness of pile on the behavior of single pile which is embedded in Nak-dong river strand. These effects can be quantined only by the results of model tests. The nonlinear responses of lateral loadieflection relationships are fitted to 2nd polynomial equations by model tests results. Also, the lateral load of a deflection, yield and ultimate lateral load max. bending moment, and yield bending moment can be expressed as exponential function in terms of relative density and deflection ratio. By comparing Brom's results with model results on the lateral ultimate load, it is found that short and long pile show the contrary results with each other. The contrary results are due to the smaller assumed soil reaction than the soil reaction of the Nakiong river sand at deep point. By comparing lateral behavior on the homogeneous soil with non-homogeneous soil, it is shown that lateral loadieflection relationship is very dependent on the upper relative density. This phenomenon is shown remarkably as the difference between upper and lower relative density increases.

The suction method is the substructure installation using the water pressure difference generated by discharging water inside the pile by the pumping operation, after the intrusion by the self-weights of a large hollow steel pipe or a concrete structure. It is known as the low-noise and low-vibration method against the general pile driven method and eco-friendly, also. Most current design and safety assessment of the support structure and considering only the static load, however, the importance of dynamic behavior becomes magnified as the size of wind power generator increases. This study measures the natural frequency of the suction pile prototype about the penetration depth as a part of basic research and analyzed the interaction between the soil and the structure.

There is an increasing need for the estimation of foundation piles whose depths are unknown. Especially in repair and reinforcement works or in safety inspection and assessment to the big structures whose foundations are piles, the accurate information about the depth of foundation piles is one of the most important factors. A borehole magnetic tool has been developed and tested to meet this object. The fundamental base is that there usually exist many re-bars inside the foundation structure such as piles, and these re-bars are ferromagnetic materials which cause strong induced magnetic field comparable to the earth magnetic field. It utilizes flux-gate type magnetometer which measures 3-components of the magnetic field. Taking vertical derivatives of vertical component of the measured magnetic field, we can expect the error limit of estimating the depth of the pile end less than 20 cm in favorable condition. The maximum measurable distance is about 3 m to the pile from the borehole. The field data show that borehole magnetics is one of the most accurate, fast, and reliable methods for this object so far, as long as there is no magnetic materials such as deep located steel pipe or power cables close to the foundation piles.
Currently, cofferdams of circular cross section are widely applied as temporary facilities for the installation of bridge foundations in river/sea bridge construction in Korea. Existing caisson, sheet pile, and cell type cofferdam are widely used, but these methods take a lot of time and cost for installation and dismantling. In the case of the existing sheet pile construction method, attention is needed to secure internal and external stability because of the damage to the sheet pile due to ground penetration and difficulty in connecting element members. In this study, penetration design of circular steel pipes using suction pressure was performed on the soft ground of the west coast, and it was confirmed that penetration construction using suction pressure was possible through field tests. It was confirmed that applying the ground analysis results using the cone penetration test (CPT) to the design rather than the standard penetration test (N value) results more similar to the field test results. In addition, it was confirmed that local failure of the inside of the cofferdam was induced when a suction pressure higher than the upper limit suction pressure was applied in the silty sand.
