In 2006, Jeju Island in South Korea experienced a crisis, no electricity for three hours anywhere in the entire island. This incident was caused by a domino effect that occurred after one of the submarine power cables connecting the island to Haenam, a coastal city on the mainland, was damaged by an external load, probably from a ship anchor or a steel pile being used in marine farming. This study presents a collision analysis of a new submarine power cable protector called arch type reinforced concrete. For the analysis, a dynamic finite element program, ANSYS AUTODYN, was used to examine the displacement and stress of the submarine power cable protector using different material models (RHT concrete model, Mohr.Coulomb concrete model). In addition, two reinforcing bar spacings, 75 mm and 150 mm, were considered. From the analyses, the effects of the parameters (concrete model and spacing) on the results (displacement and stress) were analyzed, and the relations between the damage and parameters were found.
In this study, two Fe-30Mn-0.2C-(1.5Al) high-manganese steels with different surface conditions were hydrogen-charged under high temperature and pressure; then, tensile testing was performed at room temperature in air. The yield strength of the 30Mn-0.2C specimen increased with decreasing surface roughness(achieved via polishing), but that of the 30Mn-0.2C-1.5Al specimen was hardly affected by the surface conditions. On the other hand, the tendency of hydrogen embrittlement of the two high-manganese steels was not sensitive to hydrogen charging or surface conditions from the standpoints of elongation and fracture behavior. Based on the EBSD analysis results, the small decrease in elongation of the charged specimens for the Fe-30Mn-0.2C-(1.5Al) high-manganese steels was attributed to the enhanced dislocation pile-up around grain boundaries, caused by hydrogen.
Offshore platforms in seismically active areas must be designed to survive in the face of intense earthquakes without a global structural collapse. This paper scrutinizes the seismic performance of a newly designed and established jacket type offshore platform situated in the entrance of the Gulf of Suez region based on the API-RP2A normalized response spectra during seismic events. A nonlinear finite element model of a typical jacket type offshore platform is constructed taking into consideration the effect of structure-soil-interaction. Soil properties at the site were manipulated to generate the pile lateral soil properties in the form of load deflection curves, based on API-RP2A recommendations. Dynamic characteristics of the offshore platform, the response function, output power spectral density and transfer functions for different elements of the platform are discussed. The joints deflection and acceleration responses demands are presented. It is generally concluded that consideration of the interaction between structure, piles and soil leads to higher deflections and less stresses in platform elements due to soil elasticity, nonlinearity, and damping and leads to a more realistic platform design. The earthquake-based analysis for offshore platform structure is essential for the safe design and operation of offshore platforms.
Offshore wind turbines are supported by various foundations, each with its considerations in design and construction. Gravity, monopile, and suction bucket foundations encounter geotechnical issues, while jacket and tripod foundations face fatigue problems. Considering this, a gravity foundation based on a steel skirt was developed, and a monopile foundation was analyzed for Pile-Soil Interaction using the p-y curve and 3D finite element method (3D FEM). In addition, for suction bucket foundations, the effects of lateral and vertical loads were analyzed using 3D FEM and centrifuge tests. Fatigue analysis for jacket and tripod foundations was conducted using a hotspot stress approach. Some hybrid foundations and shape optimization techniques that change the shape to complement the problems of each foundation described above were assessed. Hybrid foundations could increase lateral resistance compared to existing foundations because of the combined appendages, and optimization techniques could reduce costs by maximizing the efficiency of the structure or by reducing costs and weight. This paper presents the characteristics and research directions of the foundation through various studies on the foundation. In addition, the optimal design method is presented by explaining the problems of the foundation and suggesting ways to supplement them.
This paper proposes a new hybrid support structure by the driven piles which removes disadvantages of the existing type of support structure for offshore wind turbines. The hybrid type of support structure is combined with concrete cone and steel shaft, and is supported not only by gravity type foundations but also by driven piles. For three dimensional analysis of the huge and thick concrete structure, a solid-shell element that is capable of exact modeling and node interpolations of stresses is developed. By applying wave theory of stream function and solid-shell element in XSEA simulation software for fixed offshore wind turbines, a quasi-static analysis and natural frequency analysis of proposed support structure are performed with the environmental condition on Southwest Coast in Korea. In the result, lateral displacement is not exceed allowable displacement and a superiority of dynamic behavior of new hybrid support structure is validated by natural frequency analysis. Consequently, the hybrid support structure presented in this study has a structural stability enough to be applied on real-site condition in Korea. The optimized structures based on the preliminary design concept resulted in an efficient structure, which reasonably reduces fabrication costs.
This paper presents an equation to depict the penetration behavior during the standard penetration test (SPT) in sandy deposits. An energy balance approach is considered and the driving mechanism of the SPT sampler is conceptually modeled as that of a miniature open-ended steel pipe pile into sands. The equation consists of three sets of input parameters including hyperbolic parameters (m and ${\lambda}$) which are difficult to determine. An iterative technique is thus applied to determine the optimized values of m and ${\lambda}$ using three measured values from a routine SPT data. It is verified from a well-documented record that the simulated penetration curves are in good agreement with the measured ones. At a given depth, the increase in m results in the decrease in ${\lambda}$ and the increase in the curvature of the penetration curve as well as the simulated N-value. Generally, the predicted penetration curve becomes nearly straight for the portion of exceeding the seating drive zone, which is more pronounced as soil density increases. Thus, the simulation method can be applied to extrapolating a prematurely completed test data, i.e., to determining the N value equivalent to a 30 cm penetration. A simple linear equation is considered for obtaining similar results.
In order to investigate the influence of slanting angle of reticulated root piles(RRP) on their bearing capacities, model tests of compressive and uplift loads on RRP with different slanting angles, which were installed in sandy soils with a relative density of 47%, were carried out. Each pile which is made of a steel bar of 5mm in diameter and 300mm in length, is coated with sand to be 6.5mm in diameter. One set of RRP consists of 8 piles which are installed in circular patterns forming two concentric circles, each of which has 4 piles. Slanting angles of RRP for load tests are 0$^{\circ}$, 5$^{\circ}$, 10$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 20$^{\circ}$, and 25$^{\circ}$. In addition, compressive load tests on circular footing whose diameter is the same as the outer circle of RRP were carried out. Test results show that maximum load bearing capacities of RRP by regression analysis are obtained at about 12$^{\circ}$ and 13$^{\circ}$ of slanting angles for compressive and uplift load tests, respectively. Maximum compressive bearing capacity is estimated to be 13oA bigger than that of the vertical RRP and 95% bigger than that of surface footing. Maximum uplift capacity is estimated to be 21% bigger than that of the vertical RRP. And it can be appreciated that increasing the slanting angle makes the load -Settlement behavior more ductile.

In general, when an existing pier is enlarged and reinforced using a small diameter pile, bonded anchor with deformed reinforcing bars is used to maintain the integrity of the joint. However, in the case of bonded anchors, the performance depends largely on the type of joint material. Nevertheless, unlike mechanical anchors, there is no standard method for designing appropriate design methods and proper performance evaluation. Therefore, in this study, the performance of the anchoring anchor was evaluated by performing a model experiment using the reinforcing bars and anchor reinforcing bars. Experimental results show that the structural performance of the unbonded specimen is the best, and the failure mode is the punching shear failure. The deflection of the end of the member is smaller than that of the unconnected member, The deflection of the connected member is larger than the deflection of the small connected member. As the load increases, the possibility of slippage of the anchor steel or fold connection rebar is high.

The corrosion of steel in concrete is significant in marine environment. Marine bridges are readily deteriorated due to the exposure to marine environment. Salt damage is one of the most detrimental causes to concrete bridges and port structures. Especially, the splash and tidal zones around water line are comparatively important in terms of safety and life-time point of view. During the last several decades, cathodic protection (cp) has been commonly accepted as an effective technique for corrosion control in concrete structures. Zn-mesh sacrificial anode has been recently developed and started to apply to the bridge column cp in marine condition. The detailed parameters regarding Zn-mesh cp technique, however, have not well understood. This study is to investigate how much Zn-mesh cp influences along the concrete column at elevated temperature. About 100cm column specimens with eight of 10cm segment rebars have been used to measure the variation of cp potential with the distance from Zn-mesh anode at both 10$^{\circ}$C and 40$^{\circ}$C in natural seawater. The cp potential change and current diminishment along the column specimens have been discussed for the optimum design of cp by Zn-mesh sacrificial anode
