  • In this study a seismic retrofit scheme for the reinforced concrete moment framed structures was investigated using steel bracing and moment frames. The analysis model structure is a 3-story 3-bay moment frame structure designed only for gravity load. The stress/strain concentration in brace-RC frame connection was investigated using finite element analysis. To prevent premature joint failure, steel moment frames were placed inside of middle bay of the RC frame. Two types of braces, steel braces and buckling restrained braces(BRBs), were used for retrofit, and the ductility and the strength of the structure before and after the retrofit were compared using nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. According to the analysis results, the strength and ductility of the structure retrofitted by the moment frames and braces increased significantly. The added steel frame did not contribute significantly to the increase of lateral strength mainly because the size is relatively small.

  • Safety and serviceability of a planar steel frame are assessed. Attention is turned to the individual main steps in the assessment procedure, i.e., to the definition of loads, selection of transformation model, determination of the response of the structure to the loading, and to the definition of the limiting values (considering safely and serviceability of the structure). The potential of the method using direct Monte Carlo technique as a powerful tool is emphasized.

  • The feasibility of using elastic dampers to mitigate earthquake-induced structural response is studied in this paper. The properties of elastic dampers are briefly described. A procedure for evaulating the elastic damping effect when added to a structure is proposed in which the damping effect of elastic dampers is incorporated into modal damping ratios through an energy approach. Computer simulation of the damped response of a multi-storey steel frame structure shows significant reduction in floor displacement levels.

  • The connection of the steel structure serves to transmit external forces to the main components. The same is true for the behavior of modular systems composed mainly of steel or composite members. In this study, the joint performance of the composite and steel modules proposed was evaluated. The analytical models of the two joint types were constructed and were subjected to cyclic loading to assess the safety and the energy dissipation capacity of the joint types. The analysis results of the joints showed that the joints of the modular systems remain stable when the joint rotation reached the seismic performance limit state of the 0.02 rad required for steel intermediate moment frame. It was also observed that the joint of the composite modular system showed higher energy dissipation capacity compared with the steel modular system.

  • Nowadays, climatic environment change has become a major issue in the world. This causes major emissions of carbon dioxide industries steel industry, thermal power industry, cement industry is essential in the reduction of carbon dioxide, which is based on total carbon dioxide emissions account for most of the construction industry in an effort to minimize the environmental load is needed. accordingly, through case studies, It can be induce the selection to minimize environmental load by comparing the output of quantitative energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions per constructional methods. As a result of this study, RC Structure was less environmental load than SC structure.

  • It follows in deterioration of the steel frame structure and becomes remodeling and removal. The construction work characteristic, economical efficiency and stability environment characteristic are planned and considered hereafter control plan of the steel frame structure which is deteriorated currently to cutting mettled plentifully sued on gas cutting of H beam. However it will not be able to apply from the explosives demolition which is makes a weak instantaneously and then collapses the building at the time. In this study, shape charge was used for cutting of the H-beam. That is the element testing to estimate explosives demolition for steel frame structure. As a result, it is found for single-side rutting method, both-sides rutting methods by H-beam thickness and pre-rutting process. It confirmed an affix method and an ease characteristic by fixing tool. Also, it is shown that air blasting decreased about 8dB(A) in order to reduce air blasting used by sand box. However, it will be required to reduce air blasting little more because explosives demolition will be done in urban site.

  • Masonry infill has a significant effect on stiffness contribution, strength and ductility of masonry-infilled frames. These effects may cause damage of weak floor, torsional damage or short-column failure in structures. This article presents experiments of 1/2.5-scale steel reinforced recycled aggregates concrete (SRRC) frames. Three specimens, with different infill rates consisted of recycled concrete hollow bricks (RCB), were subjected to static cyclic loads. Test phenomena, hysteretic curves and stiffness degradation of the composite structure were analyzed. Furthermore, effects of axial load ratio, aspect ratio, infill thickness and steel ratio on the share of horizontal force supported by the frame and the infill were obtained in the numerical example.

  • To evaluate the seismic performance of a base isolated building accurate analytical model should be selected. The analytical results such as reduced accelerations member forces and relative displacements of the superstructure of the base isolated building are only meaningful when the analytical model is close enough to the real structure. Real size one bay-two story steel frame and two kinds of seismic isolators(laminated elastomeric bearing and lead-rubber bearing) are designed. manufactured and constructed in the laboratory. Free vibration tests using fuse bars were conducted to evaluate the change of dynamic characteristics(period and damping) before and after base isolation of the steel frame. The experimental results of free vibration tests were also used as a bench mark for adjusting the selected analytical modeling to real base isolated steel frame.

  • In this paper, machine learning models were applied to predict the seismic response of steel frame structures. Both geometric and material nonlinearities were considered in the structural analysis, and nonlinear inelastic dynamic analysis was performed. The ground acceleration response of the El Centro earthquake was applied to obtain the displacement of the top floor, which was used as the dataset for the machine learning methods. Learning was performed using two methods: Decision Tree and Random Forest, and their efficiency was demonstrated through application to 2-story and 6-story 3-D steel frame structure examples.

  • In this study, the effect of presence and distribution of masonry infill walls on the mid-rise steel frame structures having soft ground storey was evaluated by implementing finite element (FE) methods. Masonry infill walls were distributed randomly in the upper storey keeping the ground storey open without any infill walls, thus generating the worst case scenario for seismic events. It was observed from the analysis that there was an increase in the seismic design forces, moments and base shear in presence of randomly distributed masonry infill walls which underlines that these design values need to be amplified when designing a mid-rise soft ground storey steel frame with randomly distributed masonry infill. In addition, it was found that the overstrength related force modification factor increased and the ductility related force modification factor decreased with the increase in the amount of masonry infilled bays and panels. These must be accounted for in the design of mid-rise steel frames. Based on the FE analysis results on two mid-rise steel frames, design equations were proposed for determining the over strength and the ductility related force modification factors. However, it was recommended that these equations to be generalized for other steel frame structure systems based on an extensive analysis.
