Wind induced large bending oscillation amplitudes in tall and slender telecommunication steel towers may lead to precocious fatigue cracks and consequent risk of collapse of these structures, many of them installed in rural areas alongside highways and in highly populated urban areas. Varying stress amplitudes at hot spots may be attenuated by means of passive control mechanical devices installed in the tower. This paper gives an account of both mathematical-numerical model and the technique applied to design and evaluate the performance of a double controller installed in existing towers which is composed by a nonlinear pendulum and a novel type of passive controller described herein as a planar motion disk mounted on shear springs. Results of experimental measurements carried out on two slender tubular steel towers under wind action demonstrate the efficiency of the double controllers in attenuating the towers bending oscillation amplitudes and consequent stress amplitudes extending the towers fatigue life.
The surface integrity of a machined surface is an important factor that dictates several performance characteristics of a metal part. In this paper, the surface integrity aspects are presented specifically with respect to the tribological properties of steel. Test specimens were prepared under varying conditions to induce different levels of surface deformation and hardness. Sliding and rolling experiments were performed to assess the friction and wear characteristics of these specimens using a pinon-disk type tribotester and a plate-on-ball type set-up. It is reaffirmed that heat treated steels possess superior sliding and rolling fatigue resistance than raw steel. However, for the case of raw steels machined under varying conditions, the harder specimen resulted in higher wear. This result is attributed to the presence of surface cracks that were induced during machining. The results of such findings will aid in the optimization of surface preparation process for tribological applications of steel.

Dry-sliding-wear behavior of Fe-18Cr-l0Mn steel with various carbon and nitrogen contents was characterized, and the effect of carbon and nitrogen contents on the wear was investigated. Dry sliding wear tests of the steel were carried out at room temperature against an AISI 52100 bearing steel ball using a pin-on-disk wear tester. Applied wear loads were varied from 10 N to 100 N, and the sliding distance was fixed as 720 m. Worn surfaces and the wear debris of the steel were examined using an SEM to find out the wear mechanism. It was found that the Fe-18Cr-10Mn with both carbon and nitrogen exhibited superior wear resistance to the steel with only nitrogen. The wear resistance of the Fe-18Cr-10Mn-xC-yN alloy increased with the increase of the carbon content. The excellent wear resistance of the Fe-18Cr-10Mn-xC-yN alloy was explained by the increased strain-hardening capability with the interstitial atoms.
In this study, the effect of coating thickness($20{\mu}m$ and $30{\mu}m$) on microstructure and tensile properties in Yb:YAG disk laser welds of Al-Si-coated boron steel (1.2mmt) was investigated. In the case of as welds, the quantity of ferrite was found to be higher in base metal than that in HAZ (Heat Affected Zone) and fusion zone, indicating, fracture occurrs in base metal, and the fracture position is unrelated to the coating thickness. Furthermore, yield strength, tensile strength of base metal and welded specimens showed similar behavior whereas elongation was decreased. On the other hand, base metal and HAZ showed existence of martensite after heat treatment, the fusion zone indicated the presence of full ferrite or austenite and ferrite during heat treatment ($900^{\circ}C$, 5min), After water cooling, austenite was transformed to martensite, and the quantity of ferrite in fusion zone was higher as compared with in base metal, resulting in sharply decrease of yield strength, tensile strength and elongation, which leads to fracture occured at fusion zone. In particular, results showed that because the concentration of Al was higher in 30um coating layer specimen than that of 20um coating specimen, after heat treatment, producing a higher quantity of ferrite was higher after heat treatment in the fusion zone; howevers, it leads to a lower tensile property.

In this paper. micro electrochemical machining (ECM) for micro structure fabrications is presented. By applying ultra short pulses. the chemical reaction can be restricted only to the region very close to the electrode. Micro ECM is applied to machining micro structures through electrochemical milling process becasuse it doesn't suffer from tool wear. Using this method. 3D micro structures were machined on stainless steel. It was found that micro machining is possible with good surface quality in the low concentration electrolyte,0.1 M H₂SO₄. In ECM, as the machining depth increases, better flushing of electrolyte is required for sufficient ion supply. Layer-by-layer milling is advantageous in flushing. However, layer-by-layer milling causes taper of structures. To reduce the taper, application of a disk-type electrode was introduced. By electrochemical milling, various 3D micro structures including a hemisphere with 60 ㎛ diameter were fabricated.
In this study, lubrication characteristics of sliding members were compared with the change of the hardness of friction surfaces and the application of nano-oil. The materials of the specimens were gray cast iron (AISI 35, AISI 60) and nickel chromium molybdenum steel (AISI 4320). The Friction coefficients and the temperature variations of on the frictional surfaces were measured by disk-on-disk tribotester under the condition of fixed rotating speed. The friction surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). In the results, the friction coefficients of the disk surface were increased as hardness difference was increased. The friction coefficient lubricated in nano-oil was less than mineral oil. This is because a spherical nano particle plays a tiny ball bearing between the frictional surfaces, improved the lubrication characteristics.

The friction and wear behaviors of Magnetron Sputtered MoS$_2$films were investigated by using a pin on disk type tester which was designed and manufactured for this experiment. The experiment was conducted by using silicon nitride (Si$_3$N$_4$) as a pin material and Magnetron Sputtered MoS$_2$on bearing steel (STB2) as a disk material, under operating conditions that include different surface roughness (Polishing specimen, Grinding specimen)(2types), linear sliding velocities in the range of 22, 44, 66mm/sec (3types), normal loads vary from 9.8N, 19.6N, 29.4N(3types), corresponding to contact pressures of 1.9∼2.7GPa and atmospheric conditions of high vacuum( 1.3${\times}$10$\^$-4/Pa), medium vacuum( 1.3${\times}$10$\^$-l/Pa), ambient air(10$\^$5/Pa)(3types). We investigated fracture mechanism in magnetron sputtered MoS$_2$films with Magnetron Sputtering method in each experiment.

An experimental study was performed to discover the effect of silver coating on the frictional behavior of SM45C steel at sliding surfaces. Pure silver was coated the SM45C disk surfaces by a thermal evaporation method. Experiments using a pin-on-disk test-rig was performed under dry air and various humidity conditions. Friction coefficients increased to a high and unstable value after failure of coating, and friction coefficients increased with increasing the thickness of silver coated layer. But optimum coating thickness was not observed.
This paper focuses the strength and wear resistance of CVD diamond films. The strength of free-standing CVD diamond films synthesized by microwave plasm CVD, DC plasma CVD, RF plasma CVD and arc discharge plasma jet CVD has been measured by three-point bending test. The wear resistance of CVD diamod films has been evaluated by the pin-on-disk type testing. diamond films coated on the base of sintered tungsten carbide pin by hot filament CVD have been rubbed with a sintered diamond disk in muddy water. Volume removed wear of CVD diamond has been compared with stellite, WC alloy and bearing steel.

This paper is to investigate the wear behavior of submerged-arc clad materials by the wear test with a ball-on-disk type wear testing machine in air. The specimens were clad with Stoody105 alloy wire on a carbon steel (SM45C) substrate by submerged-arc cladding process under different welding parameters. The wear behavior of the cladding through ball-en-disk test has been studied under the wear load from 5N to 16N and sliding speed from 8cm/s to 35cm/s. The weight of the specimen loss was measured. Scanning electron micrographs of the worn surface show a layer of oxide film formed on the worn surface. Oxidation wear mechanism controls the wear process. The spalling of the oxide is caused by the repeated rubbing fatigue mechanism.
