A higher level of engineering standard in the field of construction, is the use of prestressing in building structures. The concept of prestressing steel structures has only recently been widely considered, despite a long and successful history of prestressing concrete members. Several analytical studies of prestressed steel girders were reported in literatures, but much of the work was not studied with reference to the optimal design and behaviour of the prestressed steel plate girder. A plate girder prestressed eccentrically, will behave as a beam-column, which is subjected to axial compression and bending moment which will cause the beam to buckle out. The study of buckling of the prestressed steel plate girder is necessary for stability criteria. This paper deals with the stability of prestressed steel plate girder using concept of "Vlasov's Circle of Stability" under eccentric prestressing force.
Steel -Concrete Composite two girder railway bridges applying high performance steel with extra thick plate have economic and aesthetic advantages due to the simplification of manufacturing and construction process. However, steel bridges are seldom adopted in domestic railway bridge, since steel bridges are not efficient as R.C bridges considering dynamic characteristics and noise, etc. While highway bridges do not have lower horizontal bracing and larger interval of diaphragm cross beam, railway bridges install lower horizontal bracings to control the torsion due to heavy eccentrical line load. Accurate finite element analysis were performed with the parameters of existence of bracing and bracing shape, with the cross beam interval and stiffness, etc. To find out the effects of secondary members such as horizontal bracings and diaphragms, static md dynamic analysis have been performed by using finite element method. In this study, few member plate-girder bridges are analyzed with variable span lengths to examine the dynamic behavior and limits of damping. And though lateral bracings are members against torsion, but lateral bracing's absence is no big problem. Time history analysis using mode superposition method makes proof of this result.
In order that the steel girder and the concrete slab act as a composite structure, the connectors must have adequate strength and stiffness. If there are no horizontal or vertical separations at the interface, the connectors are described as rigid, and complete interaction can be said to exist under these idealized circumstances. However, all connectors are flexible to some extent, and therefore incomplete interaction always exists. This paper presents a practical structural analysis of composite girders with incomplete interaction by three methods. One is the stiffness matrix method derived from the general solutions of differential equation, another is the finite element analysis that alternate method of solution treats the structure as a frame and defines the spring as an additional member, and the other is the finite element analysis using principle of virtual work. The deflection characteristic of composite girder is investigated using these three methods. Also, this paper propose a simplified procedure of estimating a degree of imperfection for a composite girder with incomplete interaction using the sectional properties of girder and spring constants of shear connectors.
Lattice girder is a new steel support developed in Europe for the replacement of an existing H-shaped steel set, which is installed after tunnel excavation. Lattice girder has the following several advantages : 1. Lattice girder minimizes the amount of shotcrete shadow which happens to occur behind a steel support. 2. A triangular shape of lattice girder makes shotcrete placed efficiently. 3. Lattice girder provides a good bond strength for shotcrete, which makes the composite structure of lattice girder and shotcrete behave monolithic, and therefore, the rock load can be supported effectively by the lattice girder system, This paper presents the results from a model wall test, a strength test for shotcrete shot on the model wall and a strength test for the bond between lattice girder and shotcrete. These tests proved that lattice-girder system is superior to H-shaped steel-set system concerning the shotcrete rebound rate, the developed shotcrete strength and the adhesion characteristics.
This paper is concerned with free vibration characteristics and natural frequency of horizontally curved composite plate girder bridges. Three-dimensional finite element models are developed for the girders using the software package LUSAS and analyses carried out on the models. The validity of the finite element models is first established through comparison with the corresponding results published by other researchers. Studies are then carried out to investigate the effects of total number of girders, number of cross-frames and curvature on the free vibration response of horizontally curved composite plate girder bridges. The results confirm the fact that bending modes are always coupled with torsional modes for horizontally curved bridge girder systems. The results show that the first bending mode is influenced by composite action between the concrete deck and steel beam at low subtended angle but, on the girders with larger subtended angle at the centre of curvature such influence is non-existence. The increase in the number of girders results in higher natural frequency but at a decreasing rate. The in-plane modes viz. longitudinal and arching modes are significantly influenced by composite action and number of girders. If no composite action is taken into account the number of girders has no significant effect for the in-plane modes.

In Korea, more than 90% of the total number of steel bridges built for 40~70 m span length is a steel box-girder bridge type. A steel box-girder bridge is suitable for long span or curved bridges with outstanding flexural and torsional rigidity as well as good constructability and safety. However, a steel box-girder bridge is uneconomical, requiring many secondary members and workmanship such as stiffeners and ribs requiring welding attachments to flanges or webs. Therefore, in US and Japan, a plate girder bridge, which is relatively cheap and easy to construct is generally used. One type of the plate girder bridge is the two- or three-main girder plate bridge, which is a composite plate girder bridge that minimizes the number of required main girders by increasing the distance between the adjacent girders. Also, for the simplification of girder section, the stiffener which requires attachment to the web is not required. The two-main steel girder plate bridge is a representative type of plate girder bridges, which is suitable for bridges with 10 m effective width and has been developed in the early 1960s in France. To ensure greater safety of two- or three-main girder plate bridges, a larger steel section is used in the bridge domestically than in Europe or Japan. Also, the total number of two- or three-main girder plate bridge constructed in Korea is significantly less than the steel box girder bridge due to a lack of designers' familiarity with more complex design detailing of the bridge compare to that of a steel box girder bridge design. In this study, a new construction method called Turn Over method is proposed to minimize the steel section size used in a two- or three-main girder plate bridge by applying prestressing force to the member using confining concrete section's weight to reduce construction cost. Also, a full scale 20 m Turn Over girder specimen and a Turn Over girder bridge specimen were tested to evaluate constructability and structural safety of the members constructed using Turn Over process.
In recent years, various research and developments to introduce composite bridges of new concept have been performed. The types of integral bridge and portal rigid frame bridge are having advantages in bridge maintenance and structural efficiency by eliminating expansion joints and bridge supports. However, the detail of typical girder-abutment connection has problems such as complexity of construction and increase of the construction cost. A new type of bridge, called prestress integral composite girder(PIC girder) bridge, is proposed in this study, which decreases the cost of construction and improves the efficiency of construction by simplifying the detail of construction for girder-abutment connection. PIC girder bridge has the connection detail in which the steel girder and the abutment are integrated by using the PS bar installed in the connection. In this study, finite element analysis and mock-up load test are conducted to evaluate the propriety of design, the effective of fabrication and structural safety for PIC girder bridge. The adequacy of the PIC giredr bridge is verified by the results of static/dynamic load test and finite element analyses.

A new type of bridge superstructures referred to as Steel-Confined Prestressed Concrete Girder (SCP Girder) was developed, which is composed of concrete, steel plate, and prestressing tendon. The girder may maximize structural advantages of these components; thus, long span bridges with low height girder may be constructed. For the effective design and fabrication of the gilder, the design software program was developed and the process of fabrication established. The experimental girder designed using the program was manufactured in actual size to confirm the fabric ability of the girder. Propriety of design, structural safety, and applicability of the gilder were verified through the load test.

The objective of the present study is to provide statistical resistance statistics for steel-concrete composite plate girder sections under positive and negative moments. Statistical properties on yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and fracture toughness of domestic structural steel products, gathered from an analysis of over 16,000 samples, were evaluated. Using the steel samples for the plate girder, the bias factor and the coefficient of variation of the ultimate flexural resistance for representative composite plate girder sections under positive and negative flexures were presented. In calculating the ultimate flexural resistance of the composite section, the moment curvature relationships were developed using the incremental load approach considering material nonlinearity for the steel girder. The predicted statistics can be used in the future for the efficient calibration of LRFD code.
To achieve a rational detail of the girder-abutment joints in composite integral bridges, and validate the performance of the joints with perfobond connectors, this paper proposes two innovative types of I-shaped steel girder-concrete abutment joints with perfobond connectors intended for the most of bearing capacity and the convenience of concrete pouring. The major difference between the two joints is the presence of the top flange inside the abutments. Two scaled models were investigated with tests and finite element method, and the damage mechanism was revealed. Results show that the joints meet design requirements no matter the top flange exists or not. Compared to the joint without top flange, the initial stiffness of the one with top flange is higher by 7%, and the strength is higher by 50%. The moment decreases linearly in both types of the joints. At design loads, perfobond connectors take about 70% and 50% of the external moment with and without top flange respectively, while at ultimate loads, perfobond connectors take 53% and 26% of the external moment respectively. The ultimate strengths of the reduced sections are suggested to be taken as the bending strengths of the joints.
