The load transfer mechanism and load-bearing capacity of cast steel joints for H-shaped beam to square tube column connection are studied based on the deformation compatibility theory. Then the monotonic tensile experiments are conducted for 12 specimens about the cast steel joints for H-shaped beam to square tube column connection. The findings are that the tensile bearing capacity of the cast steel joints for beam-column connection depends on the ring of cast steel stiffener. The tensile fracture happens at the ring of the cast steel stiffener when the joint fails. The thickness of square tube column has little influence on the bearing capacity of the joint. The square tube column buckles while the joint without concrete filled, but the strength failure happens for the joint with concrete filled column. And the length of welding connection between square tube column and cast steel stiffener has little influence on the load-bearing capacity of the cast steel joint. Finally it is shown that the load-bearing capacity of the joints for H-shaped beam to concrete filled square tube column connection is larger than that of the joints for H-shaped beam to square tube column connection by 10% to 15%.
This paper presents a finite element (FE) model for predicting the behaviour of steel column-column connections under axial compression and tension. A robustness approach is utilised for the design of steel column-column connections. The FE models take into account for the effects of initial geometric imperfections, material nonlinearities and geometric nonlinearities. The accuracy of the FE models is examined by comparing the predicted results with independent experimental results. It is demonstrated that the FE models accurately predict the ultimate axial strengths and load-deflection curves for steel column-column connections. A parametric study is carried out to investigate the effects of slenderness ratio, contact surface imperfection, thickness of cover-plates, end-plate thickness and bolt position. The buckling strengths of steel column-column connections with contact surface imperfections are compared with design strengths obtained from Australian Standards AS4100 (1998) and Eurocode 3 (2005). It is found that the column connections with maximum allowable imperfections satisfy the design requirements. Furthermore, the steel column-column connections analysed in this paper can be dismantled and reused safely under typical service loads which are usually less than 40% of ultimate axial strengths. The results indicate that steel column-column connections can be demounted at 50% of the ultimate axial load which is greater than typical service load.
This paper presents a simplified model to study post-buckling behaviours of the axially restrained steel column at elevated temperatures in fire. The contribution of axial deformation to the curvature of column section is included in theoretical equations. The possible unloading at the convex side of the column when buckling occurs is considered in the stress-strain relationship of steel at elevated temperatures. Parameters that affect structural behaviours of the axial restrained column in fire are studied. The axial restraint cause an increase in the axial force before the column buckles; the buckling temperature of restrained columns will be lower than non-restrained steel columns. However, the axial force of a restrained column decreases after the column buckles with the elevation of temperatures, so make use of the post-buckling behaviour can increase the critical temperature of restrained columns. Columns with temperature gradient across the section will produce lower axial force at elevated temperatures.
The seismic performance of the reinforced concrete (RC) special-shaped column to steel beam connections with steel jacket used in the RC column to steel beam fabricated frame structures was investigated in this study. The three full-scale specimens were subjected to cyclic loading. The failure mode, ultimate bearing capacity, shear strength capacity, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation capacity, and strain distribution of the specimens were studied by varying the steel jacket thickness parameters. Test results indicate that the RC special-shaped column to steel beam connection with steel jacket is reliable and has excellent seismic performance. The hysteresis curve is full and has excellent energy dissipation capacity. The thickness of the steel jacket is an important parameter affecting the seismic performance of the proposed connections, and the shear strength capacity, ductility, and initial stiffness of the specimens improve with the increase in the thickness of the steel jacket. The calculation formula for the shear strength capacity of RC special-shaped column to steel beam connections with steel jacket is proposed on the basis of the experimental results and numerical simulation analysis. The theoretical values of the formula are in good agreement with the experimental values.
Currently, there is a lack of research in the design approach to avoid column wall failure in the concrete filled double skin steel tubular (CFDST) column-beam connections. In this paper, a finite element model has been developed and verified by available experimental data to analyze the failure mechanism of CFDST column-beam connections. Various finite element models with different column hollow ratios (χ) were established. The simulation result revealed that with increasing χ the failure mode gradually changed from yielding of end plate, to local failure of the column wall. Detailed parametric analyses were performed to study the failure mechanism of column wall for the CFDST column-beam connection, in which the strength of sandwiched concrete and steel tube and thickness of steel tube were incorporated. An analytical model was proposed to predict the moment resistance of the assembled connection considering the failure of column wall. The simulation results indicate that the proposed analytical model can provided a conservative prediction of the moment resistance. Finally, an upper bound value of χ was recommend to avoid column wall failure for CFDST column-beam connections.

In this paper, cyclic plasticity model of SM490 TMC was formulated by basing on monotonic loading test and cyclic loading test. For exact description of cyclic performance and plastic deformation capacity of steel member using SM490 TMC, formulated cyclic plasticity model and finite deformation theory were applied to 3-dimensional elastic-plastic FE analysis. Cyclic plastic behavior of pipe-section steel column using SM490 TMC was clarified by carrying out numerical analysis. Also, in order to clarifying seismic performance of pipe-section steel column using SM490 TMC, analysis results were compared with analysis results of pipe-section steel column using SM490. A comparison of analysis results shows that SM490 TMC pipe-section steel column has a better cyclic performance for strength and energy dissipation than SM490 pipe-section steel column under cyclic loading
One of the most important structural components of steel structures is the column-base connections which are obliged to transfer horizontal and vertical loads safely to the reinforced concrete (RC) or concrete base. The column-base connections of steel or composite steel structures can be organized both moment resistant and non-moment resistant leading to different connection styles. Some of these connection styles are ordinary bolded systems, socket systems and embedded systems. The structures are frequently exposed to cycling lateral loading effects causing fatal damages on connections like columns-to-beams or columns-to-base. In this paper, connection of steel column with RC base was investigated analytically and experimentally. In the experiments, bolded connections, socket and embedded connection systems are taken into consideration by applying cyclic lateral loads. Performance curves for each connection were obtained according to experimental and analytical studies conducted and inelastic behavior of connections was evaluated accordingly. The cyclic lateral performance of the connection style of embedding the steel column into the reinforced concrete base and strengthening of steel column in upper level of base connection was found to be higher and effective than other connection systems. Also, all relevant test results were discussed.
This paper reports the experimental results of three through bolt beam-column connections under pure shear forces using modified push-out tests. The investigated specimens include extended end-plates and six through-bolts connecting square concrete-filled steel tubular column (S-CFST) to steel beams. The main goal of this study is to investigate if and how the mechanical shear connectors, such as steel angles and stud bolts, contribute to the shear transfer mechanisms in the steel-concrete interface of the composite column. The contribution of shear studs and steel angles to improve the shear resistance of steel-concrete interface in through-bolt connections was investigated using tests. The results showed that their contribution is not significant when the beam-column connection is included in the push-out tests. The specimens failed by pure shear of the long bolts, and the ultimate load can be predicted using the shear resistance of the bolts under shear forces. The predicted values of load allowed obtaining a good agreement with the tests results.

When the weight if a concrete member makes problems, or when the cost of the concrete is relatively high, it may be economical to use a hollow concrete member. But a hollow R.C column may have poor ductility because of the brittle failure at the inner face of the hollow R.C column. This brittle failure results from the absence of the confinement at the inner face of the hollow R.C column. To avoid this brittle failure an internally confined hollow R.C column by a steel tube was developed before. In this study, a hollow R.C column is internally confined by a corrugated steel tube instead of a general flat steel tube. And a column ductility is performed. Test results show that the energy ductility ratio of a internally confined hollow R.C column by a by a corrugated steel tube corresponds to $80\%$ of the energy ductility ratio of a general solid R.C column.

In this paper, deformation capacity of steel moment connections with RHS column was investigated. Initially, non-linear finite element analysis of five bate steel beam models was conducted. The models were designed to have different detail at their beam-to-column connection, so that the flexural moment capacity was different respectively. Analysis results showed 4hat the moment transfer efficiency of the analytical model with RHS-column was poor when comparing to model with WF(Wide flnage)-column due to out-of-plane deformation of the RHS-column flange. The presence of scallop and thin plate of RHS column was also a reason of the decrease of moment transfer efficiency, which would result in a potential fracture of tile steel beam-to-column connections. Further test on beam-to-column connections with RHS column revealed that the moment transfer efficiency of a beam web decreased due to the out-of-plane deformation of column flange, which led to premature failure of the connection.
