  • In order to investigation splitting bond strength of the deformed longitudinal reinforcing bars in the R C members strengthened laterally with the external steel-band, a total 9 sets of test re-bars with and without active confining force given by the external steel-band are pulled monotonically until failure. Test results indicate that the bond strength becomes higher with the increase in number of steel-band sets and their initial stress magnitude. This is due to the active confining force given by the steel-band, and passive confining forces given by the steel-band and transverse reinforcements, in which the passive confinement effect varies depending on the magnitude of active confining force. An equation to estimate the splitting bond strengths for the R C members strengthened laterally with the external steel-band is developed based on the several experimental results of the present study.

  • This paper deals with the electromagnetic loss characteristics of enclosures for a 24kV high voltage switchgear by using a finite element method (FEM). A study on the electromagnetic characteristics of enclosures for a high voltage switchgear should be conducted to minimize the size and the temperature rising of a switchgear. Generally, the enclosures made by stainless steel are used to minimize the eddy current loss caused by the transporting current in Bus bars due to its non-magnetic characteristics although the price of stainless steel is expensive compared with other metal for enclosures. Therefore, a switchgear made by stainless steel enclosures could be fabricated as a small size and are applied to a switchgear in urban substations. On the contrary, the switchgear enclosures made by steel could be fabricated with relatively cheap manufacturing price. However, the temperature easily rises due to the transporting current in Bus bars because steel is a ferromagnetic material. Therefore, the size of a switchgear made by steel enclosures is relatively massive and installed in rural substations. In this paper, the electromagnetic losses in the enclosures of a switchgear according to various enclosure thicknesses are calculated and compared with each other. Especially, we proposed a hybrid type enclosures for a switchgear made by stainless steel (top and bottom enclosure) and steel (left and right enclosure). It is concluded that the cost electromagnetic performance of applying the hybrid type enclosure is favorable to develop a high voltage switchgear.

  • The bond between the concrete and bar is a main factor affecting the performance of the reinforced concrete (RC) members, and since the steel corrosion reduces the bond strength, studying the bond behavior of concrete and GFRP bars is quite necessary. In this research, a database including 112 concrete beam test specimens reinforced with spliced GFRP bars in the splitting failure mode has been collected and used to estimate the concrete-GFRP bar bond strength. This paper aims to accurately estimate the bond strength of spliced GFRP bars in concrete beams by applying three soft computing models including multivariate adaptive regression spline (MARS), Kriging, and M5 model tree. Since the selection of regularization parameters greatly affects the fitting of MARS, Kriging, and M5 models, the regularization parameters have been so optimized as to maximize the training data convergence coefficient. Three hybrid model coupling soft computing methods and genetic algorithm is proposed to automatically perform the trial and error process for finding appropriate modeling regularization parameters. Results have shown that proposed models have significantly increased the prediction accuracy compared to previous models. The proposed MARS, Kriging, and M5 models have improved the convergence coefficient by about 65, 63 and 49%, respectively, compared to the best previous model.

  • Standard compression tests of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) cylinders are conducted to formulate compressive stress versus compressive strain relationship of SFRC. Axial pullout tests of SFRC specimens are also conducted to explore its tensile stress strain relationship. Cover concrete spalling and reinforcement buckling models developed originally for normal reinforced concrete are modified to extend their application to SFRC. Thus obtained monotonic material models of concrete and reinforcing bars in SFRC members are combined with unloading/reloading loops used in the cyclic models of concrete and reinforcing bars in normal reinforced concrete. The resulting path-dependent cyclic material models are then incorporated in a finite-element based fiber analysis program. The applicability of these models at member level is verified by simulating cyclic lateral loading tests of SFRC columns under constant axial compression. The analysis using the proposed SFRC models yield results that are much closer to the experimental results than the analytical results obtained using the normal reinforced concrete models are.

  • The hollow RC(Reinforced concrete) pier has decrease of weight and reduced of materials compared to solid RC pier. However, the hollow RC pier shows a low ductile behavior due to brittle failure of inside concrete. To overcome this problem, the internally confined hollow reinforced concrete column has been developed. In this study, the behavior of internally confined hollow RC piers were evaluated with safety ratio, ductility, total material cost, the total weight of the pier, etc. The chosen parameters for the study are hollow ratio, thickness of internal steel tube, intervals between vertical re-bars, numbers of horizontal re-bars, and strength of concrete.

  • This paper describes the need for a ductile Fiber Reinforced Plastic(FRP) reinforcement for concrete structures. Using the material hybrid and geometric hybrid, it is demonstrated that the pseudo-ductility characteristic can be generated in FRP rebar. Ductile hybrid FRP bars were successfully fabricated at 4mm and l0mm nominal diameters using an hand lay up method. Tensile specimens from these bars were tested and compared with behavior of FRP rebar and steel bar

  • In this work we simulate explicitly the dynamic fracture propagation in reinforced concrete beams. In particular, adopting cohesive theories of fracture with the direct simulation of fracture and fragmentation, we represent the concrete matrix, the steel re-bars and the interface between the two materials explicitly. Therefore the crack nucleation within the concrete matrix, through and along the re-bars, the deterioration of the concrete-steel interface are modeled explicitly. The numerical simulations are validated against experiments of three-point-bend beams loaded dynamically under various strain rates. By extracting the crack-tip positions and the crack mouth opening displacement history, a two-stage crack propagation, marked by the attainment of the peak load, is observed. The first stage corresponds to the stable crack advance, the second one, the unstable collapse of the beam.

  • Wire rods are carried by C-Hooks and are tracked by bringing the inspection sensors into contact with steel bars on the C-Hooks. However, the conventional system using mechanical equipment is not reliable due to aging, wearing and bending of steel bars. To overcome these problems, a non-contact type identification system is required. This paper introduces the radio frequency identification(RFID) technology which is one of the most popular non-contact identification methods, and evaluates its performance in the real environment of POSCO. Specifically, we use tags which are designed for operating on high temperature and allowing easy attaching and detaching on the C-Hook. A new monitoring program is developed for reacting upon the conventional system and showing the results of reading of reading tags.
