The influence of EAF dust on resistivity of concrete and corrosion of steel bars embedded in concrete

  • Essentially, when electrical current flows easily in concrete that has large pores filled with highly connective pore water, this is an indication of a low resistivity concrete. In concrete, the flow of current between anodic and cathodic sites on a steel reinforcing bar surface is regulated by the concrete electrical resistance. Therefore, deterioration of any existing reinforced concrete structure due to corrosion of reinforcement steel bar is governed, to some extent, by resistivity of concrete. Resistivity of concrete can be improved by using SCMs and thus increases the concrete electrical resistance and the ability of concrete to resist chloride ingress and/or oxygen penetration resulting in prolonging the onset of corrosion. After depassivation it may slow down the corrosion rate of the steel bar. This indicates the need for further study of the effect of electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) addition on the concrete resistivity. In this study, concrete specimens rather than mortars were cast with different additions of EAFD to verify the electrochemical results obtained and to try to understand the role of EAFD addition in influencing the corrosion behaviour of reinforcing steel bar embedded in concrete and its relation to the resistivity of concrete. The results of these investigations indicated that the corrosion resistance of steel bars embedded in concrete containing EAFD was improved, which may link to the high resistivity found in EAFD-concrete. In this paper, potential measurements, corrosion rates, gravimetric corrosion weight results and resistivity measurements will be presented and their relationships will also be discussed in details.

FRP Re-bar 보강 직사각형 단면 콘크리트 보의 구조적 거동 및 설계방법에 관한연구 (A Study on the Structural Behavior and Design Criteria of FRP Re-bar Reinforced Rectangular Concrete Beam)

  • FRP Composite materials are widely applicable in the construction industries as a load-bearing structural element or a reinforcing and/or repairing materials for the concrete. In this paper, we presented the flexural behavior of FRP Re-bar and steel reinforced concrete beams and only FRP re-bars reinforced concrete beams. FRP Re-bar manufactured by different fibers but the same vinylester resin. Also, surface of FRP Re-bars is coated garnet and glass fiber by epoxy to increase the adhesive to concrete. Experimental investigation pertaining to the load-deflection and load-strain characteristics of two classfied specimens is presented and the theoretical prediction is also conducted. In the investigation, the effects of FRP Re-bar reinforcement are estimated. The experimental results arc compared with theoretical predictions. Good agreements arc observed.

Seismic performance of RC bridge piers reinforced with varying yield strength steel

  • This paper experimentally investigates the effect of yield strength of reinforcing bars and stirrups on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) circular piers. Reversed cyclic loading tests of nine-large scale specimens with longitudinal and transverse reinforcement of different yield strengths (varying between HRB335, HRB500E and HRB600 rebars) were conducted. The test parameters include the yield strength and amount of longitudinal and transverse reinforcement. The results indicate that the adoption of high-strength steel (HSS) reinforcement HRB500E and HRB600 (to replace HRB335) as longitudinal bars without reducing the steel area (i.e., equal volume replacement) is found to increase the moment resistance (as expected) and the total deformation capacity while reducing the residual displacement, ductility and energy dissipation capacity to some extent. Higher strength stirrups enhance the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of RC bridge piers. While the product of steel yield strength and reinforcement ratio ($f_y{\rho}_s$) is kept constant (i.e., equal strength replacement), the piers with higher yield strength longitudinal bars are found to achieve as good seismic performance as when lower strength bars are used. When higher yield strength transverse reinforcement is to be used to maintain equal strength, reducing bar diameter is found to be a better approach than increasing the tie spacing.

연속철근콘크리트 포장의 횡방향 철근 설계방법 및 시공관련 이슈 검토 (Construction Issues and Design Procedure for Transverse Steel in Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP))

  • PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to evaluate construction issues and design for transverse steel in continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP). METHODS : The first continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) design procedure appeared in the 1972 edition of the "AASHTO Interim Guide for Design of Pavement Structures", which was published in 1981 with Chapter 3 "Guide for the Design of Rigid Pavement" revised. A theory that was accepted at that time for the analysis of steel stress in concrete pavement, called subgrade drag theory(SGDT), was utilized for the design of reinforcement of CRCP - tie bar design and transverse steel design - in the aforementioned AASHTO Interim Guide. However SGDT has severe limitations due to simple assumptions made in the development of the theory. As a result, any design procedures for reinforcement utilizing SGDT may have intrinsic flaws and limitations. In this paper, CRCP design procedure for transverse steel was introduced and the limitations of assumptions for SGDT were evaluated based on various field testing. RESULTS: Various field tests were conducted to evaluate whether the assumptions of SGDT are reasonable or not. Test results show that 1) temperature variations exist along the concrete slab depth, 2) very little stress in transverse steel, and 3) warping and curling in concrete slab from the field test results. As a result, it is clearly revealed out that the assumptions of SGDT are not valid, and transverse steel and tie bar designs should be based on more reasonable theories. CONCLUSIONS : Since longitudinal joint is provided at 4.1-m spacing in Korea, as long as joint saw-cut is made in accordance with specification requirements, the probability of full-depth longitudinal cracking is extremely small. Hence, for transverse steel, the design should be based on the premise that its function is to keep the longitudinal steel at the correct locations. If longitudinal steel can be placed at the correct locations within tolerance limits, transverse steel is no longer needed.

콘크리트 보강용 FRP 리바의 개발 및 내구 특성 (Development and Durability Characteristics of FRP Reinforcing Bar for Concrete Structures)

  • The corrosion of steel reinforcing bar(re-bar) has been the major cause of the reinforced concrete deterioration. FRP(Fiber-reinforced polymer) reinforcing bar has emerged as one of the most promising and affordable solutions to the corrosion problems of steel reinforcement in structural concrete. In this study, long-term durability performance of FRP re-bar were evaluated. The mechanical and durability properties of two type of CFRP- and GFRP re-bar were investigated; the FRP re-bars were subjected to alkaline solution, acid solution, salt solution and deionized water. The mechanical and durability properties were investigated by performing tensile and short beam tests. Experimental results confirmed the desirable resistance of FRP re-bar to aggressive chemical environment.

철근부식을 고려한 FRP Hybrid Bar 및 일반 철근을 가진 RC 보의 내력저하 평가 (Evaluation of Load Capacity Reduction in RC Beam with Corroded FRP Hybrid Bar and Steel)

  • RC(Reinforced Concrete) 부재는 인장영역에서 보강재가 하중을 지지해야 하므로, 철근부식은 내구성 뿐 아니라 안전성에서도 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 최근 개발된 FRP Hybrid Bar와 일반 철근을 매립한 RC 보부재를 제작하였으며, ICM(Impressed Current Method)를 적용하여 철근부식을 촉진시켰다. 기존의 이론식인 Faraday 법칙을 이용하여 부식량을 평가하였으며, 일반설계강도를 가진 콘크리트 보부재에 대하여 휨시험을 수행하였다. 일반 철근에서는 부식량이 4.9~7.8% 수준으로 평가되었으며 이에 따른 휨 저항능력은 -25.4~-50.8% 수준으로 감소하였다. FRP Hybrid Bar를 매립한 RC 보에서는 부식과 휨 저항 감소가 평가되지 않았는데, 이는 에폭시 도료로 코팅된 철근의 우수한 내부식성에 기인한다. 촉진 부식실험에서는 FRP Hybrid Bar의 우수한 내부식성 및 부착성능을 확인하였는데, 실용화를 위해서는 장기적인 침지를 통한 내구성 평가가 필요하다고 판단된다.

지지부재로 이형철근을 설치하는 띠형 강보강재의 인발성능 평가 (The Evaluation for Pullout Performance of Steel Strip Reinforcements with Deformed-Bars as Transverse Members)

  • 본 연구에서는 지지부재가 설치된 띠형 강보강재에 대한 실내인발시험을 수행하였다. 주문진 표준사를 사용하여 상대밀도 80%인 모형지반을 조성하였고, 지지부재의 개수를 0~2개로 구분하여 실내인발시험을 수행하였다. 상재압은 $50kN/m^2{\sim}200kN/m^2$까지 4단계로 구분하여 적용하였고, 1mm/min 속도로 강보강재를 인발하였다. 표면이 매끄러운 띠형 강보강재의 인발저항력은 보강재 표면과 지반 사이에서 마찰저항만 발현되기 때문에 인발 초기에 급격히 증가하다가 지속적으로 감소하는 경향을 나타낸다. 반면, 지지부재를 설치한 강보강재의 인발저항력은 마찰저항뿐만 아니라 수동저항도 함께 발현되므로 계속적으로 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 보강재의 형태에 관계없이 최대인발저항은 상재압이 증가함에 따라 선형적으로 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 지지부재를 1개 설치한 경우에 비해 지지부재를 2개 설치했을 때의 최대수동저항은 작게 나타났다. 이는 지지부재의 설치 간격 및 위치에 따라 지지부재에서 발현되는 수동저항의 크기가 다르기 때문에 나타나는 현상으로 판단되며, 지지부재 설치 위치 및 간격에 따른 추가 인발시험을 통해 확인할 필요가 있다.

동결융해 및 UV 폭로시험을 거친 FRP Hybrid Bar의 인발거동특성 평가 (Evaluation of Bond Strength in FRP Hybrid Bar Affected by Freezing/thawing Test and UV Rays)

  • FRP Hybrid Bar는 내부에 강재를 유리섬유와 에폭시 수지가 코팅된 형태로 사용되는데, 인장경화 성능이 있으며, 경량이므로 효과적인 보강재료로 사용될 수 있다. 자외선 및 동결융해에 노출된 에폭시는 표면 열화가 발생하기 쉬우며, 이는 매립된 철근 및 표면의 콘크리트와의 부착력 저하를 야기할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 일반철근, FRP Hybrid Bar 및 자외선(UV) 폭로시험을 거친 FRP Hybrid Bar의 외관특성분석을 실시하였다. 또한 각 보강재를 사용하여 콘크리트 인발 공시체를 제조하였으며, 동결융해시험을 실시해 Cycle에 따른 부착성능을 분석하였다. FRP Hybrid Bar는 UV 폭로시험 후에도 표면 산화(Chalking)와 같은 에폭시계 재료의 열화가 나타나지 않았다. 동결융해시험은 120Cycle 및 180Cycle까지 진행하였는데, UV 폭로시험 후 FRP Hybrid Bar를 사용한 공시체는 $241{\pm}kN$ 부착력을 가지고 있었다. 이는 일반철근 대비 약 106.3%수준으로 개선된 부착강도인데, FRP Hybrid Bar 표면의 규사코팅에 따라 부착면적이 증가했기 때문이다. 3가지 조건(일반철근, FRP Hybrid Bar, UV 폭로시험 후의 FRP Hybrid Bar)에 대하여, 동결융해 Cycle이 증가함에 따라 부착력이 크게 감소하지는 않았으나, 코팅된 규사의 박락으로 인해 UV 시험 이후의 동결융해를 거친 조건에서는 실험 편차가 상대적으로 증가하였다.

Effects of Steel Fiber Reinforcement and the Number of Hooked Bars at R/C Exterior Joints

  • An experimental study was performed on the Pull-out behavior of 90-deg standard hooks from the exterior beam-column connections. the effects of the number of hooked bars and fiber reinforcement of the joint area were investigated with the following conclusions : (1) Under the pull-out action of hooked bars. the damage and cracking of joint area the number of hooks pulling out from a joint increases; (2) Substitution of the transverse column (confining) reinforcement with steel fibers at the joint region effectively reduces the extent of cracking in exterior joints caused by the pull-out of hooked bars; (3) The pull-out strength and post-peak ductility of hooked bars are adversely influenced by the increase in number of hooks pulling out from an exterior joint. Current hooked bar anchorage design guidelines may be improved by considering the effect of the number of hooked bars on anchorage conditions at the exterior joints; and (4) The strength and ductility of hooked bars under pull-out forces are positively influenced by substituting the conventional confining reinforcement of exterior joints with steel fibers . The application of steel fibers to the exterior joints is an effective technique for improving the anchorage conditions of hooked bars, and also for reducing the congestion of reinforcement in the beam-column connections.

철근상세에 따른 고강도 철근이 사용된 철근콘크리트 연결보의 구조성능 (Effect of Reinforcement Layout on Structural Performance of Reinforced Concrete Coupling Beams with High-strength Steel Bar)

  • 본 연구는 철근상세(대각선 및 수평 철근상세)가 실규모 연결보의 구조성능에 미치는 영향을 평가하기 위하여 실시되었다. 연결보의 시공성 및 경제성을 향상시키기 위하여 고강도 철근(SD500 및 SD600)을 사용하였다. 반복하중이 작용하는 동안 연결보의 순경간(양쪽 전 단벽 사이의 간격)을 유지하기 위하여 강체 프레임 및 링크조인트를 설치하였다. 실험결과 대각선 철근상세을 적용한 연결보가 수평 철근상세 연결보에 비해 높은 연성을 나타내었다. AC1318-14 기준은 대각선 철근상세의 연결보 설계에는 적용이 가능할 것으로 판단되나, 수평 철근상세 연결보의 최대내력은 과대평가하는 것으로 나타났다. ASCE 41-13에서 제시된 연결보의 유효강성은 대각선 및 수평 철근상세를 적용한 연결보의 실험결과를 과대평가하고 있는 것으로 판단된다.
