This article presents a comparative study of the effect of steel layouts on the seismic behavior of transition steel-concrete composite connections, both experimental and analytical investigations of concrete filled steel tube-reinforced concrete (CFST-RC) and steel reinforecd concrete-reinforced concrete (SRC-RC) structures were conducted. The steel-concrete composite connections were subjected to combined constant axial load and lateral cyclic displacements. Tests were carried out on four full-scale connections extracted from a real project engineering with different levels of axial force. The effect of steel layouts on the mechanical behavior of the transition connections was evaluated by failure modes, hysteretic behavior, backbone curves, displacement ductility, energy dissipation capacity and stiffness degradation. Test results showed that different steel layouts led to significantly different failure modes. For CFST-RC transition specimens, the circular cracks of the concrete at the RC column base was followed by steel yielding at the bottom of the CFST column. While uncoordinated deformation could be observed between SRC and RC columns in SRC-RC transition specimens, the crushing and peeling damage of unconfined concrete at the SRC column base was more serious. The existences of I-shape steel and steel tube avoided the pinching phenomenon on the hysteresis curve, which was different from the hysteresis curve of the general reinforced concrete column. The hysteresis loops were spindle-shaped, indicating excellent seismic performance for these transition composite connections. The average values of equivalent viscous damping coefficients of the four specimens are 0.123, 0.186 and 0.304 corresponding to the yielding point, peak point and ultimate point, respectively. Those values demonstrate that the transition steel-concrete composite connections have great energy dissipating capacity. Based on the experimental research, a high-fidelity ABAQUS model was established to further study the influence of concrete strength, steel grade and longitudinal reinforcement ratio on the mechanical behavior of transition composite connections.
In cold-formed steel structures, such as trusses, wall frames and portal frames, the use of back-to-back built-up cold-formed stainless-steel lipped channels as compression members are becoming increasingly popular. The advantages of using stainless-steel as structural members are corrosion resistance and durability, compared with carbon steel. The AISI/ASCE Standard, SEI/ASCE-8-02 and AS/NZS do not include the design of stainless-steel built-up channels and very few experimental tests or finite element analyses have been reported in the literature for such back-to back cold-formed stainless-steel channels. Current guidance by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and the Australian and New Zealand (gAS/NZS) standards for built-up carbon steel sections only describe a modified slenderness approach, to consider the spacing of the intermediate fasteners. Thus, this paper presents a numerical investigation on the behavior of back-to-back cold-formed stainless-steel built-up lipped channels. Three different grades of stainless steel i.e., duplex EN1.4462, ferritic EN1.4003 and austenitic EN1.4404 have been considered. Effect of screw spacing on the axial strength of such built-up channels was investigated. As expected, most of the short and intermediate columns failed by either local-global or local-distortional buckling interactions, whereas the long columns, failed by global buckling. All three grades of stainless-steel stub columns failed by local buckling. A comprehensive parametric study was then carried out covering a wide range of slenderness and different cross-sectional geometries to assess the performance of the current design guidelines by AISI and AS/NZS. In total, 647 finite element models were analyzed. From the results of the parametric study, it was found that the AISI & AS/NZS are conservative by around 10 to 20% for cold-formed stainless-steel built-up lipped channels failed through overall buckling, irrespective of the stainless-steel grades. However, the AISI and AS/NZS can be un-conservative by around 6% for all three grades of stainless-steel built-up channels, which failed by local buckling.
The present study experimentally and analytically investigated the push-out behaviour of H-shaped steel section embedded in ultrahigh-performance fibre-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC). The effect of significant parameters such as the concrete types, fibre content, embedded steel length, transverse reinforcement ratio and concrete cover on the bond stress, development of bond stress along the embedded length and failure mechanism has been reported. The test results show that the bond slip behaviour of steel-UHPFRC is different from the bond slip behaviour of steel-normal concrete and steel-high strength concrete. The bond-slip curves of steel-normal concrete and steel-high strength concrete exhibit brittle behaviour, and the bond strength decreases rapidly after reaching the peak load, with a residual bond strength of approximately one-half of the peak bond strength. The bond-slip curves of steel-UHPFRC show an obvious ductility, which exhibits a unique displacement pseudoplastic effect. The residual bond strength can still reach from 80% to 90% of the peak bond strength. Compared to steel-normal concrete, the transverse confinement of stirrups has a limited effect on the bond strength in the steel-UHPFRC substrate, but a higher stirrup ratio can improve cracking resistance. The experimental campaign quantifies the local bond stress development and finds that the strain distribution in steel follows an exponential rule along the steel embedded length. Based on the theory of mean bond and local bond stress, the present study proposes empirical approaches to predict the ultimate and residual bond resistance with satisfactory precision. The research findings serve to explain the interface bond mechanism between UHPFRC and steel, which is significant for the design of steel-UHPFRC composite structures and verify the feasibility of eliminating longitudinal rebars and stirrups by using UHPFRC in composite columns.

Purpose of this paper is to accummulate database of automotive steel sheet from mild steel to high strength steel in cold rolled steel sheets. Physical properties, mainly mechanical properties, of steel sheet are tested and all data are arranged to one sheet. Methods of test are composed of FLD, tensile strength test, chemical composition, surface roughness and product conditions. Finally this database will be helpful to automotive body designers and die designers to design automotive body parts and tools in a material point of view.
Based on the test data of Nippon Steel Corporation, the formulas for calculating mechanical properties of fire-resistant (FR) steel at elevated temperatures have been established. A practical approach for fire safety design of FR steel members, including axially compressed members, flexural members and eccentrically compressed members, is developed in this paper. Compared with the full-scale specimen experiments and FEM numerical analysis, this practical approach for fire safety design of FR steel members is demonstrated to be effective and precise.
Recently, the steel has been increaseingly used as an integrated part of high-rise buildings, which often composed of steel structures, steel reinforced concrete structures and composite structures. The steel base is designed to transfer the stresses induced from steel column to the reinforced concrete footing through the base plate. However, in the design of steel structures and steel reinforced concrete structure, it is generally difficult to evaluate the bearing strength of the steel base subjected to large axial force. Furthermore, the material used in steel base is quite different from those used in other connections and a load transferring mechanism of steel base is very complicated in nature. Therefore, a special attention must be placed in design and construction of steel base. In generally, the bearing strength test and research of the steel base subjected to concentrated load are carried out. But, in the design of the structures, uniaxial eccentric load is loaded to the steel base of the steel structures. In this research, the bearing strength and the me of failure considering eccentric loads and eccentric length, were experimented when eccentric load is loaded to the steel base of steel structures. Based on the test results, a basic design reference is suggested for a reasonable design of steel structures, steel reinforced concrete structures and composite structures.

We investigated the applicability of steel slag as a capping material in order to minimize phosphorus(P) release into seawater. Steel slag is a byproduct from the iron and steel industries and the use of steel slag has some advantages in respect of both cost and environmental concern. P removal by steel slag were studied in a batch system with respect to changes in contact time and initial concentration. Kinetic adsorption data were described well by pseudo 2nd order model, indicating rate limiting step for P adsorption to steel slag is chemical sorption. Equilibrium adsorption data fitted well to Langmuir isotherm model which describes for single layer adsorption. The maximum P adsorption capacity of steel slag was 7.134 mg-P/L. Increasing the depth of steel slag produced a positive effect on interruption of P release. More than 3 cm of steel slag was effective for blocking P release and 5 cm of steel slag was recommended as the depth for capping of P contaminated marine sediments. Increasing P concentration and flow rate had a negative effect on P removal ratio. It was concluded that the steel slag has a potential capping material for blocking P release from marine sediments.
HAZ impact toughness of Ti-oxide steel was investigated and compared to that of a conventional Ti-nitride steel. Toughness variations of each steel with weld peak temperatures and cooling rates were interpreted with microstructural transformation characteristics. In contrast to Ti-nitride steel showing continuous decrease in HAZ toughness with peak temperature, Ti-oxide steel showed increase in HAZ toughness above $1400^{\circ}C$ peak temperature. The HAZ microstructure of the Ti-oxide steel is characterized by the formation of intragranular ferrite plate, which was found to start from Ti-oxide particles dispersed in the matrix of the steel. Large austenite grain size above $1400^{\circ}C$ promoted intragranular ferrite plate formation in Ti-oxide steel while little intragranular ferrite plate was formed in Ti-nitride steel because of dissolution of Ti-nitrides. Ti-oxides in the Ti-oxide steel usually contain MnS and have crystal structures of TiO and/or $Ti_2O_3$.

The steel pipe strut for a means of the retaining structure has been used generally in North America, Europe and China so far. However, Korea and Japan, two countries are much familiar with H-shape steel strut having its anisotropic strength on two different axes(named as strong and weak axes), even though they recognize the steel pipe's excellence of structural function associated with its compressive ability. This trend is mainly due to a number of its field application, accumulated know-hows and workmanship etc. This paper introduces particular features of a high-strength steel pipe strut in comparison with the H-shape steel strut and its application for two excavation sites in Seoul. As a result of field verification, the high-strength pipe steel strut is more effective than the H-shape steel strut in terms of construction costs, schedules, constructibility and structural stability.
Because of the heavy demand of confining steel to restore the column ductility in seismic regions, it is more efficient to confine these columns by hollow steel tube to form concrete-filled-steel-tube (CFST) column. Compared with transverse reinforcing steel, steel tube provides a stronger and more uniform confining pressure to the concrete core, and reduces the steel congestion problem for better concrete placing quality. However, a major shortcoming of CFST columns is the imperfect steel-concrete interface bonding occurred at the elastic stage as steel dilates more than concrete in compression. This adversely affects the confining effect and decrease the elastic modulus. To resolve the problem, it is proposed in this study to use external steel confinement in the forms of rings and ties to restrict the dilation of steel tube. For verification, a series of uni-axial compression test was performed on some CFST columns with external steel rings and ties. From the results, it was found that: (1) Both rings and ties improved the stiffness of the CFST columns and (2) the rings improve significantly the axial strength of the CFST columns while the ties did not improve the axial strength. Lastly, a theoretical model for predicting the axial strength of confined CFST columns will be developed.
