  • Highly hydrophobic lubricants including magnesium stearate may hinder water penetration into the tablet core resulting in delayed disintegration of fast disintegrating tablets. Alternative lubricants with equivalent lubricating properties may need to be incorporated into the tablet formulations. Sodium stearyl fumarate, glyceryl behenate and polyethylene glycol were evaluated regarding the tablet ejection energy, mechanical strength and disintegration time using Texture analyzer (TA). Resulting tablets were also compared with different particle sizes of granules and various compression forces. Among the tested lubricants, sodium stearyl fumarate was less sensitive to mixing time and also showed better or competitive tablet properties. During the experiments, TA was found to be very useful tool to investigate the tablet properties.

  • Matrix tablets of nifedipine (NP) were prepared with Eudragit, diluent (lactose or Ca. phosphate) and Mg. stearate employing two different preparation methods (wet granulation and direct compression) to develop its sustained-release dosage forms. The effects of various formulation factors on the dissolution rate of the drug were investigated. Dissolution test was studied in pH 6.8 phosphate buffer containing 1% sodium lauryl sulfate using the paddle method. Formulation factors were the type and content of Eudragit, the type of diluent and the tablet preparation method. The optimum formula of NP matrix tablet, which resulted in a similar dissolution profile to that from Adalat Oros used as a reference, was 30 mg NP, 10% Eudragit RS, 2% Mg. stearate and an adequate quantity of lactose to yield 500 mg weight using the wet granulation method.

  • Transparent liquid crystal gels with high oil content by fatty acid soap were investigated. The solubilization efficiency of the mineral oil was dependent on the process. The process of dropping water part into the solution of oil and surfactant was more efficient than the process of dropping water part into the surfactant solution and after that dropping oil. The fatty acid soap could not solubilize the high oil content, but under the certain range, addition of CDE (Coconut Diethanolamide), Arlacel 165 (Glyceryl Stearate/PEG-100 Stearate) and cetostearyl alcohol helped solubilize the high content oil. Also, the glycerin and water content had influence on the solubilization. Especially, higher oil content gel showed elastic feature.

  • A cost-effective preparation method is proposed to prepare nanoporous alumina (NA) using aluminum chloride as a precursor with a lower cost than aluminum butoxide. In addition, the surfactant template was replaced with magnesium stearate, which has a lower unit cost in stearate acid. The adsorption isotherm test for the CO gas was carried out to compare the adsorption performance of the NA adsorbents prepared using post-hydrolysis (NA) and cost-effective precipitation (C-NA). In addition, C-NA exhibited a similar uptake capacity as NA, and the maximum uptake capacity of Pd/C-NA increased 1.3 times via Pd nanodots loading.

  • Melt processing characteristics of nylon 6 (N6) has been investigated by controlling the melt viscosity in melt impregnation process. Calcium stearate (CaST) was introduced as a lubricant for N6 and the melt viscosity of N6 decreased with adding only 1 wt$\%$ of CaST. In addition, reactive blending with polycaprolactone (PCL) was carried out by lowering the melt viscosity in N6. It was found that the melt viscosity of N6 could be controlled and further melt viscosity drop could be obtained by applying phenyl phosphite (PP) and diphenyl phosphite (DPP) to enhance the transesterification between N6 and PCL. Our approaches show that the melt viscosity of N6 could be reduced without loss of thermal stability which is the critical problem in high temperature melt impregnation process of N6.

  • The MPPO (3-methyl-1-phenyl-2-phospholene-1-oxide) was prepared by using various polymerization inhibitors such as BHT (2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol), TBC (4-tert-butylcatechol), and copper stearate. The MPPO was confirmed by the analysis using FTIR, $^1H$-NMR, and GC/MS regardless of the type of inhibitors. The yield of MPPO increased with the increase of reaction time, whereas the purity of MPPO decreased slightly. The yield and purity of MPPO increased with temperature, but the MPPO prepared by using copper stearate as a polymerization inhibitor exhibited no changes in the purity. The amount of inhibitors had no effect on the yield of MPPO. The purity of MPPOs increased with the amount of inhibitors, but the MPPO prepared by using BHT showed no changes of the purity. We found that the MPPO prepared by using copper stearate exhibited the highest catalytic activity for diphenylcarbodiimide synthesis.

  • In this study, we enhanced the emulsifying power and solubilization of sucrose stearate (SS) by creating mixtures with sodium deoxycholate (SDOC) and PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil (HCO). We employed the design of mixture experiments (DOME) methodology to identify the optimal composition of the mixture, and the impact of varying the mixture composition on its characteristics was examined through regression analysis of the experimental data. It was revealed that the emulsifying power for coconut oil was most improved when only SDOC was added to SS, and solubilization was most improved when only HCO was added, while the emulsifying power for cetyl ethylhexanoate (CEH) was most significantly improved when SDOC and HCO were added together. As a result of simultaneous optimization of three characteristics, emulsifying power for each of coconut oil and CEH, and solubilization, the optimal surfactant mixture composition was determined as SS 0.7939, SDOC 0.0586, and HCO 0.1475.

  • Nanoemulsion is an emulsion with a particle size of about 20 ~ 200 nm and has the advantage of having a transparent or translucent appearance and improving the skin permeability of an effective material with a small particle size, so it is applied in various fields. In this study, eight oils with different types of HLB and 16 oils with different types of required HLB were selected to investigate the effect of the required HLB and the type on the formation of nanoemulsion. The surfactants used at this time were Polysorbate 60 (HLB 14.9), Sorbitan state (HLB 4.7), PEG-60 hydrogenated castor oil (HLB 14.0), which were mixed with Polysorbate 60 and Sorbitan state, fixed with HLB 14.0, and Polysorbate 60 and PEG-60 hydrogenated castor oil, respectively. The formation of nanoemulsion was different depending on the type of oil, and oil with an ester structure showed a relatively excellent nanoemulsion formation ability. In particular, it was confirmed that a stable nanoemulsion was formed without a significant change after Cetyl ethylhexanoin was produced in a small size of 40 nm or less on average. In addition, it was found that using a mixture of Polysorbate 60 and Sorbitan stearate has a superior nanoemulsion formation ability than using PEG-60 hydrogenated castor oil or Polysorbate 60 alone.
