The Effects of steam heat processing of Helianthus tuberosi Rhizoma on Blood glucose lowering (국우(菊芋) 증자가 혈당강하작용에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective : This study was designed to evaluate the hypoglycemic effects of Helianthus tuberosi Rhizoma extracts and its optimum Heat processing conditions Methods : We investigated the Salivary ${\alpha}$-amylase, pancreas ${\alpha}$-amylase and ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activities of extracts from Steam Heated Helianthus tuberosi Rhizoma Ext. The inhibitory activities of a 50% EtOH extract of Steam Heated Helianthus tuberosi Rhizoma Ext against ${\alpha}$-glucosidases were evaluated in this study. Inhibiting these enzymes involved in the absorption of disaccharides significantly decreases the postprandial increase in blood glucose level after a mixed carbohydrate diet. Furthermore, the postprandial blood glucose lowering effect of Steam Heated Helianthus tuberosi Rhizoma Ext. was compared to a known type 2 diabetes drug(Acarbose(R)) in a mice model. Steam Heated Helianthus tuberosus L. Ext significantly reduced the blood glucose increase after glucose loading. Results : The results were confirmed by real-time PCR that after treated with Streptozotocin in L6 cells, induced expression of GLUT4, after the steamed Helianthus tuberosus L. Ext. treated, observed its expression was increased. Steam Heated Helianthus tuberosus L Ext treated 4 hours in L6 cells, cytotoxicity was measured in MTT assay. Its toxicity were 5.7%, 9% and 11.3% at the treatment concentration $12.5{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, $25{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, the $50{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ respectively. Conclusions : Overall, the results of this study indicate that Hypoglycemic effect of Helianthus tuberosi Rhizoma caused by the Steam heat treatment, the optimum Heat processing condition is steamming at $121^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, and it will provide the basis for developing a useful dietary supplement for controlling postprandial hyperglycemia.

  • As polysaccharides in lignocellulosic materials are encrusted with aromatic lignin molecules and have high crystallinity, these require pretreatment to improve their digestability by cellulolytic enzymes. Though a number of pretreatment methods have been proposed, the steam explosion process is evaluated as a promising method. This study was performed to investigate the effect of delignification treatment by alkali, methanol and the others on the enzymatic hydrolysis. Delignification treatment resulted in great increase rate in enzymatic hydrolysis. Concerning to the effect of delignication reagents on the enzymatic hydrolysis, methanol treatment was more effective than alkali in the case of oak wood. In pine wood, the delignification did not showed any significant enhancement of hydrolysis rate. Complete delignification by Alkali-Oxygen. Alkali treatment showed high saccharification rate of 99.5%.

  • The phenomena of oil whip in steam turbine takes place for the un-balancing force between rotor shaft and bearing oil film. The several parameters that affect onset of oil whip have been well known. However, the major parameter of oil whip is shaft mis-alinement. A oil whip causes the high vibration and the shutdown of rotor system. We mostly stop the steam turbine to adjust a shaft re-alinement concerning oil whip. In this case, It needs many costs for maintenance and long shutdown times. In this study, we study and observe the oil whip of the 300MW steam turbine in many years and we conduct the field test for another steam turbine for reducing vibration from oil whip. The results of this study are that a oil whip takes place with a particular rotating speed or a particular turbine output and the oil temperature change is a very effective method for on-line oil whip treatment.

Thermal and UV Resistance of Polytrimethylene Terephthalate Bulked Continuous Filament (PTT BCF) dyed with Vat Dye via Pad-steam Method and its Dyeing Properties (Pad-steam 법을 활용한 PTT BCF에 대한 vat 염료의 염색 특성과 내열성 및 내광성 효과)

  • This study investigated the thermal degradation and fading behavior of PTT dyed with vat dye and its dyeing ability. The PTT sample was dyed with vat dye using an acid treatment and pad-steam method to improve the dyeing performance. This method made dye particle nanosize and allowed it to penetrate the polymer material easily. The sample dyed using the pad-steam method showed level dyeing and enhanced dyeing affinity, compared to the batch-dyeing method. The degradation behavior of PTT dyed with vat dye after each heat and UV treatment was examined with the change in tensile strength or K/S value on the sample. The tensile strength and K/S values of the sample dyed with vat dye after the heat and UV treatment decreased with increasing temperature and exposure time. Although they showed high degradation under severe conditions, its rate constant was improved compared to the samples dyed with disperse dye. Consequently, acid treatment and the pad-steam method resulted in the introduction of vat dye on PTT. In addition, the PTT dyed with vat dye showed enhanced thermal and UV resistance because of their high molecular weight and chemical structure for stable adsorption behavior.

A Study on the Steam Treatment of Ferrous Sintered Parts (철계 소결 부품의 증기처리에 관한 연구)

  • Mixed powders of Fe + 0.7% C, Fe + 0.7% C + 1.6% Cu, and Fe + 0.7% C + 0.3% MnS were pressed in a mold so that the green-compact densities were 6.3, 6.5, 6.7, and 6.9 g/㎤, respectively. Then, the compacts were sintered at $1125^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes and subsequently steam treated at $600^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes. From the results, it was found that the overall properties of the steam-treated compacts, such as the weight gain of the sintered compacts, the diffusion of oxides into the sintered compacts, the surface hardness, and the formation of surface oxide layer, were primarily influenced by the density of the compacts and the oxides that were formed on the surface of the compacts by the steam treatment.

  • The Chapter of "Records on Steam Room(蒸室記)" in "Shandangjip(山堂集)" by CHOI Chungsung is a rare and notable one in that it contains the first concrete and detailed description and view of steam shower in the early Joseon Dynasty. It is known that Choi's Wind stroke(brain stroke) deteriorated due to excessive steam shower. He unreasonably entered the steam room 4 or 5 times a day for 9 consecutive days even though external pathogens had intruded into visceral organs and his energizing chi got less and weaker. By this excessive steam showering, his righteous chi was exhausted and eventually burned out. Given some records in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty writing that people died due to excessive steam shower, there was no established medical theory on the effect of steam shower before the publication of "Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑)".

  • The aim of the study was to evaluate the water treatment of pressurized water reactor secondary side by the mixed amine of ammonia and ethanolamine, from the standpoint of corrosion control, as compared with all volatile treatment of ammonia. The pressurized water reactor systems have switched a secondary side pH control agent to minimize the corrosion in the moisture separator/reheater and feedwater heater systems and the transport of corrosion products into steam generator. As results of field test, pH was increased in the steam generator and the wet steam area of moisture separator/reheater and the concentration of Fe were decreased by more than 50% as compared with water treatment of ammonia.

Formation of Furans during the Acid Hydrolysis of Agar and Their Removal by Treatments of Lime, Steam-stripping and Hydrophobic Resins (한천의 산 당화에 의한 Furan화합물의 생성 및 제거)

  • The ratio of saccharification and formation of furans during the acid hydrolysis of agar with oxalic acid and sulfuric acid were examined base on the contents of the agar and acids. The ratio of saccharification in oxalic acid appeared to be 51~59% somewhat higher than 49~61% of sulfuric acid. Formation of the furans during the acid hydrolysis increased proportional to the contents of agar and acid. The relative formation ratio was high 10~47% for furfural (FUR) and 15~29% for hydroxy-methyl furfural (HMF) in 0.5~1.25% sulfuric acid rather than those of oxalic acid. When comparing the removal efficiency of the furans using an alkali treatment, steam stripping and hydrophobic resins, FUR was eliminated 60% by the alkali treatment, 62~90% by steam stripping and 71~75% by Amberlite XAD4 and 7HP, while HMF was removed to low levels of 10.5%, 4~17% and 13~25%, respectively. The loss of reducing sugar was also observed in process of the removal of furans, and the loss rate was the level of 2~4% in alkali treatment, 11~16% in steam stripping and 7~9% in Amberlite resins.

A Study on Dimensional Stability and Thermal Performance of Superheated Steam Treated and Thermal Compressed Wood

  • Recently, wood is attracting attention as green building interior decoration material. When wood is used as building interior decoration material, excellent dimensional stability and thermal performance is required. In this study, superheated steam treatment process and thermal compression process were applied to flat sawn Pinus koraiensis wood panel in order to improve dimensional stability and thermal performance. According to results of this study, superheated steam treatment process and thermal compression process improve thermal performance and dimensional stability of wood, especially in tangential direction. The spring back in radial direction reduces the effect of thermal compression on dimensional stability of wood in radial direction.

Ethanol Production from Artificial Domestic Household Waste Solubilized by Steam Explosion

  • Solubilization of domestic household waste through Steam explosion with Subsequent ethanol production by the microbial saccharifitation and fermentation of the exploded product was studied. The effects of steam explosion on the changes of the density, viscosity, pH, and amounts of extractive components in artificial household waste were determined. The composition of artificial waste used was similar to leftover waste discharged from a typical home in Japan. Consecutive microbial saccharification and fermentation, and simultaneous microbial saccharification and fermentation of the Steam-exploded product were attempted using Aspergillus awamori, Trichoderma viride, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae; the ethanol yields of each process were compared. The highest ethanol yield was obtained with simultaneous microbial saccharification and fermentation of exploded product at a steam pressure of 2 MPa and a steaming time of 3 min.
