Design load calculations which depend on the thermal characteristics of the building structure such as the wall, roof, and fenestration provide the basic data for selecting an HVAC system and its equipment. Most of domestic multi-family houses include a high thermal storage layer like massive concrete structure and a floor heating structure. This study is to compare the results of the design heating load between steady state and unsteady state calculation in order to comprehend the thermal storage effect in multi-family houses. The design heating load under the steady state calculation is estimated from 5.4% to 7.8% larger than that under the unsteady state in the typical floor of a multi-family house model. The design heating load considered the safety factors like a orientation and location factor also is 21.4% to 26.5% larger than that by the unsteady state calculation. So, the safety factors for use of the practicing engineer are analyzed as the main factor of a heating plant oversizing.

Initial thermo-elastic and steady state creep deformation of a rotating functionally graded simple blade is studied using first-order shear deformation theory. A variable thickness model for cantilever beam has been considered. The blade geometry and loading are defined as functions of length so that one can define his own blade profile and loading using any arbitrary function. The blade is subjected to a transverse distributed load, an inertia body force due to rotation and a distributed temperature field due to a thermal gradient between the tip and the root. All mechanical and thermal properties except Poisson's ratio are assumed to be longitudinally variable based on the volume fraction of reinforcement. The creep behaviour is modelled by Norton's law. Considering creep strains in stress strain relation, Prandtl-Reuss relations, Norton' law and effective stress relation differential equation in term of effective creep strain is established. This differential equation is solved numerically. By effective creep strain, steady state stresses and deflections are obtained. It is concluded that reinforcement particle size and form of distribution of reinforcement has significant effect on the steady state creep behavior of the blade.
Thermomechanical analysis is conducted on the radioactive repository in deep rock mass considering the in-situ stress, excavation and thermal loading of a radioactive waste. Thermomechanical properties of a discontinuous rock mass are estimated by a theoretical method so called sequential analysis. Using the estimated properties as input for finite element analysis, the influence on temperature distribution and thermal stress is analyzed within the scope of 2-dimensional steady state and transient heat transfer and coupled thermal elastic plastic behaviour. Granitic rock mass is taken for this analysis. The analysis is done for two different rock mass conditions, i.e. continuous-homogeneous and highly jointed conditions, for the purpose of comparison. In the case of steady state, the extent of disturbed zone around the storage tunnel due to the heat production of the spent-fuel canister varies depending on the thermomechanical properties of the rock mass. In the case of transient analyses, the response of the jointed rock mass to the thermal loading after radioactive waste disposal varies significantly with time, resulting in dramatic changes in the both size and location of disturbed zone.
Busbar has been used as electric conductor within extra high voltage (EHV) gas insulated switchgear (GIS), which makes EHV GIS higher security, smaller size and lower cost. However, the main fault of GIS is overheating of busbar connection parts, circuit breaker and isolating switch contact parts, which has been already restricting development of GIS to a large extent. In this study, a coupled magneto-flow-thermal analysis is used to investigate the thermal properties of GIS busbar in steady-state. A three-dimensional (3-D) finite element model (FEM) is built to calculate multiphysics fields including electromagnetic field, flow field and thermal field in steady-state. The influences of current on the magnetic flux density, flow velocity and heat distribution has been investigated. Temperature differences of inner wall and outer wall are investigated for busbar tank and conducting rod. Considering the end effect in the busbar, temperature rise difference is compared between end sections and the middle section. In order to obtain better heat dissipation effect, diameters of conductor and tank are optimized based on temperature rise simulation results. Temperature rise tests have been done to validate the 3-D simulation model, which is observed a good correlation with the simulation results. This study provides technical support for optimized structure of the EHV GIS busbar.
A steady-state analysis and a simple dynamic model as simplified methods are developed, and results of energy consumption loads are compared with results obtained using computer to evaluate the analytical solution. Before obtaining simplified model a mathematical model is formulated for the effect of wall mass on the thermal performance of four different houses having various wall construction. This analytical study was motivated by the experimental work of Burch et al. An analytical solution of one-dimensional, linear, partial differential equation for wall temperature profiles and room air temperatures is obtained using the Laplace transform method. Typical Meteorological Year data are processed to yield hourly average monthly values. This study is conducted using weather data from four different locations in the United States: Albuquerque, New mexico; Miami, Florida; Santa Maria, California; and Washington D.C. for both winter and summer conditions. The steady state analysis that does not include the effect of thermal mass can provide an accurate estimate of energy consumption in most cases except for houses #2 and #4 in mild weather areas. This result shows that there is an effect of mass on the thermal performance of heavily constructed house in mild weather conditions. The simple dynamic model is applicable for high cycling rates and accurate values of inside wall temperature and ambient air temperature.
This study analyzes the thermal stress at automotive radiators on steady and transient states. The maximum displacement is shown at the lower corner of upper tank with the value of 0.51mm. The displacement becomes smaller at the center of radiator and it becomes larger at this edge. The maximum thermal stress with the value of 62 MPa is shown at the contact between upper tank and cooling plate. Thermal maximum stress with the transient state at the elapsed time of 10 second is lower than that at steady state as much as 0.7%.
The thermal characteristics of high-speed air spindle system with built-in motor are studied. Experiment and finite element method analysis obtain temperature rise and temperature distribution of housing. For the analysis three-dimensional model is built and temperature rise and distribution in thermal steady state are computed for each rotational frequency. Generally. It is said that the heat generation of air bearing is negligible. But it is certain that the heat generation of air bearing can not be negligible especially in high-speed conditions Frequency response test for air spindle system is executed. In case that the heat generation of air spindle system is high, natural frequency of the system becomes lower when it reaches thermal steady-state and it means that the stiffness of air hearing becomes smaller due to the change of bearing clearance. It is shown that the temperature rise of all spindle system causes thermal expansion md induces the variation of hearing clearance. In consequence the st illness of air bearing becomes smaller.
The design of a nuclear reactor core requires basic thermal-hydraulic information concerning the heat transfer regime at which onset of nucleate boiling (ONB) will occur, the pressure drop and flow rate through the reactor core, the temperature and power distributions in the reactor core, the departure from nucleate boiling (DNB), the condition for onset of flow instability (OFI), in addition to, the critical velocity beyond which the fuel elements will collapse. These values depend on coolant velocity, fuel element geometry, inlet temperature, flow direction and water column above the top of the reactor core. Enough safety margins to ONB, DNB and OFI must-emphasized. A heat transfer package is used for calculating convection heat transfer coefficient in single phase turbulent, transition and laminar regimes. The main objective of this paper is to study the possibility of power upgrading of WWR-S research reactor from 2 to 10 MWth. This study presents a one-dimensional mathematical model (axial direction) for steady-state thermal-hydraulic design and analysis of the upgraded WWR-S reactor in which two types of plate fuel elements are employed. FOR-CONV computer program is developed for the needs of the power upgrading of WWR-S reactor up to 10 MWth.
Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are attracting wide attention due to their outstanding performance, extensive studies have been carried out for lead-based fast reactors (LFRs) that cooled with Lead or Lead-bismuth (LBE), and small modular natural circulation LFR is one of the promising candidates for SMRs and LFRs development. One of the challenges for the design small modular natural circulation LFR is to master the natural circulation thermal-hydraulic performance in the reactor primary circuit, while the natural circulation characteristics is a coupled thermal-hydraulic problem of the core thermal power, the primary loop layout and the operating state of secondary cooling system etc. Thus, accurate predicting the natural circulation LFRs thermal-hydraulic features are highly required for conducting reactor operating condition evaluate and Thermal hydraulic design optimization. In this study, a thermal-hydraulic analysis code is developed for small modular natural circulation LFRs, which is based on several mathematical models for natural circulation originally. A small modular natural circulation LBE cooled fast reactor named URANUS developed by Korea is chosen to assess the code's capability. Comparisons are performed to demonstrate the accuracy of the code by the calculation results of MARS, and the key thermal-hydraulic parameters agree fairly well with the MARS ones. As a typical application case, steady-state analyses were conducted to have an assessment of thermal-hydraulic behavior under nominal condition, and several parameters affecting natural circulation were evaluated. What's more, two characteristics parameters that used to analyze natural circulation LFRs natural circulation capacity were established. The analyses show that the core thermal power, thermal center difference and flow resistance is the main factors affecting the reactor natural circulation. Improving the core thermal power, increasing the thermal center difference and decreasing the flow resistance can significantly increase the reactor mass flow rate. Characteristics parameters can be used to quickly evaluate the natural circulation capacity of natural circulation LFR under normal operating conditions.
In Part I of this paper, the two-temperature homogenized model for the fully ceramic microencapsulated fuel, in which tristructural isotropic particles are randomly dispersed in a fine lattice stochastic structure, was discussed. In this model, the fuel-kernel and silicon carbide matrix temperatures are distinguished. Moreover, the obtained temperature profiles are more realistic than those obtained using other models. Using the temperature-dependent thermal conductivities of uranium nitride and the silicon carbide matrix, temperature-dependent homogenized parameters were obtained. In Part II of the paper, coupled with the COREDAX code, a reactor core loaded by fully ceramic microencapsulated fuel in which tristructural isotropic particles are randomly dispersed in the fine lattice stochastic structure is analyzed via a two-temperature homogenized model at steady and transient states. The results are compared with those from harmonic- and volumetric-average thermal conductivity models; i.e., we compare $k_{eff}$ eigenvalues, power distributions, and temperature profiles in the hottest single channel at a steady state. At transient states, we compare total power, average energy deposition, and maximum temperatures in the hottest single channel obtained by the different thermal analysis models. The different thermal analysis models and the availability of fuel-kernel temperatures in the two-temperature homogenized model for Doppler temperature feedback lead to significant differences.
