To design a very large floating structure, such as a floating airport, we have to estimate the hydroelastic responses of a very large floating structure (VLFS) exactly. We developed the numerical method for estimating the hydroelastic responses of the VLFS. The developed numerical approach is based on a combination of the three-dimensional source distribution method, the wave interaction theory and the finite element method for structurally treating the space frame elements. The Numerical results of the hydroelastic responses and steady drift forces of a somisubmersible type offshore structure, which is supported by the 33(3 by 11) floating bodies, with various bending rigidities are illustrated.
In recent years, the semiconductor industry and the optical industry are developed rapidly. The recent demands have expanded for optical components such as the optical lens, the optical semiconductor and the measuring instrument. Object transport systems are driven typically by the magnetic field and the conveyer belt. Recent industry requires more faster and efficient transport system. However, conventional transport systems are not adequate for transportation of optical elements and semiconductors. The conveyor belts can damage precision optical elements by the contact force and magnetic systems can destroy the inner structure of semiconductor by the magnetic field. In this paper, the levitation transport system using ultrasonic wave is developed for transporting precision elements without damages. The steady state flexural vibration of the beam is expressed using Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The transport direction of an object is examined according to phase difference and frequency. The theoretical results are verified by experiments.
An analysis is made of flow and rocket motion during a supersonic separation stage of air-launching rocket from the mother plane. Three-dimensional Euler and Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved to analyze the steady/unsteady flow field around the rocket which is being separated from two cases of mother plane configuration: one is an idealized ogive-cylinder body and the other is a real F-4E Phantom. The simulation results clearly demonstrate the effect of shock-expansion wave interaction between the rocket and the mother plane. As a result, a design-guideline of supersonic air-launching rocket for the safe separation is proposed.
I consider the structure of steady wave system which is admitted by the continuum equations for materials that undergo phase transformations with exothermic chemical reaction. In particular, the dynamic phase front structures between liquid and gas phases, and solid and liquid phases are computationally investigated. Based on the one-dimensional continuum shock structure analysis, the present approach can estimate the nano-width of waves that are present in combustion. For illustration purpose, n-heptane is used in the evaporation and condensation analysis and HMX is used in the melting and freezing analysis of energetic materials of interest. On-going effort includes extension of this idea to include broad range of liquid and solid fuels, such as rocket propellants.

Acoustic field in steady-state is characterized by a Helmholtz equation. The transmission characteristics of acoustic wave devices is however influenced by the presence of the mean flow in the medium. The effect of the mean How introduces additional terms in the equation. In the present paper, two approaches are considered. One is that the equation is directly discretized by FEM for one-dimensional and the axisymmetric case. Another is that the equation is first transformed into the standard Helmholtz equation which is solved by BEM. The numerical demonstrations are made for the axisymmetric FEM and the three-dimensional BEM modeling. The numerical examination for a straight circular duct is first considered. The solutions are compared wish the analytical ones. The examination is then extended to the case when the mean How is locally present in a muser with expansion chamber.
The aerodynamics of the Wells turbine has been studied using a 3-dimensional, unstructured mesh flow solver for the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The basic feature of the Wells turbine is that even though the cyclic airflow produces oscillating axial forces on the airfoil blades, the tangential force on the rotor is always in the same direction. Geometry used to define the 3-dimensional numerical grid is based upon that of an experimental test rig. The 3-dimensional Wells turbine model, consisting of approximate 220,000 cells is tested at four axial flow rates. In the calculations the angle of attack has been varied between $10^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ of blades. Representative results from each case are presented graphically and analyzed. It is concluded that this method holds much promise for future development of Wells turbines.
This numerical study investigate resonance frequency of natural convection for steady state, periodic flow and chaotic flow in two-dimensional direct numerical simulations, differentially heated, vertical cavities having aspect ratios near unity. The enclosure cavity has isothermal and time dependent temperature side walls and adiabatic top/bottom walls. The aspect ratio is 1/3, 1/2, 1, 2, and 3 for the varying Rayleigh number. Resonance frequency for AR=1 has decrease as the aspect ratio and the Rayleigh number are increasing.
This paper describes a supersonic separation of air-launching rocket from the mother plane. Three dimensional Euler equations were numerically solved to analyze steady/unsteady state fluid flows. To solve the Euler equations, named CFD-FASTRAN that is commercial computation code. The results of simulation clearly demonstrate effect of shock-expansion wave interaction between the rocket and the mother plane. Moreover, important influential factors at separating stage of the rocket were extracted with a comprehensive analysis. Finally, from the consideration of supersonic-separation, a guideline to safety-separation is given to the design of supersonic air-launching rocket.
Very frequently the compressible flow in an extinction nozzle of gas circuit breaker is simulated under no arc assumption, which can be reasonable for both high and low current breakings. In the present study, computations are performed to investigate the major features of the compressible flows inside the arc extinction nozzle of gas circuit breaker. A fully implicit finite volume scheme is applied to solve the two-dimensional, steady, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations. The computed results are validated with the previous experimental data available. Several types of turbulence models are explored to reasonably predict the complicated flows inside the arc extinction nozzle. The obtained results show that the shock wave boundary layer interaction inside the nozzle significantly influences the whole performance of the gas breaker.
This study describes a theoretical and experimental investigation of gas wave propagation in the pipe system. Most calculations of compressible flows in the pipe have been based on the method of characteristics. This technique has propensity to truncate waves and is difficult to apply to non-perfect gas. A method that describes the application of a two-step Lax-Wendroff acheme to solution of the unsteady one-dimentional flow in the pipe was developed. Theoretical calculations using both the method of characteristics and the two-step Lax-Wendroff method are presented including a realistic model for heat transfer and friction processes. In the present work, account is taken of the nonlinear behavior. For sections of parallel pipe, an one dimensional unsteady homentropic analysis is employed, and a numerical solution is obtained with the aid of a digital computer, using the method of characteristics and two-step Lax-Wendroff method. This analysis is then combined with boundary models, based on a quasi-steady flow approach, to give a complete treatment of the flow behavior in the pipe system.
