Properties of polymer based nanocomposites depend on dispersion state of embedded fillers. In order to examine the effect of dispersion state on rheological properties, a new bi-mode FENE dumbbell model was proposed. The FENE dumbbell model includes two separate ensemble sets of dumbbells with different friction coefficients, which simulate behavior of well dispersed and aggregated carbon nanotubes (CNTs). A new parameter indicating dispersion state of the CNT was proposed to account for degree of dispersion quantitatively as well as qualitatively. Rheological material functions in elongational, steady shear, and oscillatory shear flows were obtained numerically. The CNT/epoxy nanocomposites with different dispersion state were prepared depending on whether a solvent is used for the dispersion of CNTs or not. Dispersion state of the CNT in the epoxy nanocomposites was morphologically characterized by the field emission scanning electronic microscope and the transmission electron microscope images. It was found that the numerical prediction was in a good agreement with experimental results especially for steady state shear flow.
A low-order potential based boundary element method is applied to the prediction of the flow around the cavitating propeller in steady or in unsteady inflow. For given cavitation number, the cavity shape is determined in an iterative manner until the kinematic and the dynamic boundary conditions are both satisfied on the approximate cavity boundary. In order to improve the solution behavior near the tip region, a hyperboloidal panel geometry and a modified split panel method are applied. The method is then extended to include the analysis of time-varying cavitating flows around the propeller blades via a time-step algorithm in time domain. In the method, the steady state oscillatory solution is obtained by incremental stepping in the itme domain. Finally, the present method is validated through comparison with other numerical results and experimental data.
Thermal convection in a horizontal annulus is considered, and the bifurcation phenomena of flows from time-periodic to chaotic convection are numerically investigated. The unsteady two-dimensional streamfunction-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. As Rayleigh number is increased, the steady flow bifurcates to a time-periodic flow with a fundamental frequency, and afterwards a period-tripling bifurcation occurs with further increase of the Rayleigh number. Chaotic convection is established after a period-doubling bifurcation. A periodic convection with period 4 appears after the first chaotic convection. At still higher Rayleigh numbers, chaotic flows reappear.
A system of conservation equations for steady, oscillatory and pulsating duct flows are solved analytically by linearizing non-linear convective terms. Analytical solutions of velocity profiles for these flows are obtained in the form of infinite series. The experimental study for the air flow in a square duct ($40mm{\times}40mm$ and 400 mm long) is carried out to measure velocity profiles and other parameters by using a hot-wire anemometer with data acquisition and processing system. Major characteristics of the flows such as the classification of flow patterns, determination of critical Reynolds number and velocity profiles is accomplished from the experismental results.
An experimental technique was developed to determine the strain-rate in a tensile specimen. Then one can calculate the transient isothermal elongational viscosity. Both shear and elongational viscosities were measured to study the effect of shear and elongational fields on the flow properties. The comparison between these viscosities shows that the onset of rapid viscosity growth as crystallization solidification proceeds occurs at about the same value of time at very small deformation rates (0.0028 and 0.0047 $s^{-1}$). The comparison of these measured viscosities as functions of shear and elongational Hencky strains also reveals that the onset of rapid viscosity growths starts at critical Hencky strain values. The behaviour of steady shear viscosity as function of temperature sweep was also explored at three different low shear rates. Finally, the influence of changing oscillatory frequencies and strain rates was also investigated.
Using a Rheometries Fluids Spectrometer (RFS II), the dynamic viscoelastic properties of aqueous poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) solutions in small amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields have been measured over a wide range of angular frequencies. The angular frequency dependence of the storage and loss moduli at various molecular weights and concentrations was reported in detail, and the result was interpreted using the concept of a Deborah number De. In addition, the experimentally determined critical angular frequency at which the storage and loss moduli become equivalent was compared with the calculated characteristic time (or its inverse value), and their physical significance in analyzing the dynamic viscoelastic behavior was discussed. Finally, the relationship between steady shear flow and dynamic viscoelstic properties was examined by evaluating the applicability of some proposed models that describe the correlations between steady flow viscosity and dynamic viscosity, dynamic fluidity, and complex viscosity. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: (1) At lower angular frequencies where De<1, the loss modulus is larger than the storage modulus. However, such a relation between the two moduli is reversed at higher angular frequencies where De>l, indicating that the elastic behavior becomes dominant to the viscous behavior at frequency range higher than a critical angular frequency. (2) A critical angular frequency is decreased as an increase in concentration and/or molecular weight. Both the viscous and elastic properties show a stronger dependence on the molecular weight than on the concentration. (3) A characteristic time is increased with increasing concentration and/or molecular weight. The power-law relationship holds between the inverse value of a characteristic time and a critical angular frequency. (4) Among the previously proposed models, the Cox-Merz rule implying the equivalence between the steady flow viscosity and the magnitude of the complex viscosity has the best validity. The Osaki relation can be regarded to some extent as a suitable model. However, the DeWitt, Pao and HusebyBlyler models are not applicable to describe the correlations between steady shear flow and dynamic viscoelastic properties.

In this paper, the fundamental equations are developed for the pulsatile laminar flow generated by changing the oscillatory flow with $0{\leq}f{\leq}48Hz$ into a steady one with $0{\leq}Re{\leq}2500$ in a rigid circular pipe. Analytical solutions for the wave propagation factor k, the axial distributions of cross-sectional mean velocity $u_m$ and pressure p are schematically derived and confirmed experimentally. The axial distributions of centerline velocity and pressure were measured by using Pitot-static tubes and strain gauge type pressure transducers, respectively. The cross-sectional mean velocity was calculated from the centerline velocity by applying the parabolic distribution of the laminar flow and it was confirmed by using the ultrasonic flowmeter. It was found that the axial distributions of cross-sectional mean velocity and pressure agree well with theoretical ones and depend only on the Reynolds number Re and angular velocity $\omega$.
A mock circulatory loop system has been developed to construct a simulator for trainees in cardiopulmonary bypass systems or to simulate a test environment for cardiac-assist devices. This paper proposes a computerized mock circulatory loop system whose node is modularized by using a servo control flow regulator to simulate dynamic change of the hemodynamic status. To observe the effect of time-varying resistance, one with hemodynamic properties, the proposed system replicates the planned cross-sectional areas of the outlet of a ventricular assist device in terms of voltage input of a servo valve. The experiment is performed (1) for steady-input commands of selected area sizes and (2) for dynamic commands such as monotonous increase and decrease, and oscillatory functions of the voltage input, and a computer program based on LabVIEW (National Instruments, Austin, USA) processes every measured data and control command to the servo valve. The results show that the pressure and flow at the target points with respect to time-varying resistance match intuitive estimation: the pressure at the outlet and the pressure drop between both sides of the valve increased and the flow at the outlet decreased for increased resistance.
