  • In this paper, the prototype of the HTS motor with an on-board cryocooler, is fabricated and tested. The overall system is composed of the stator with conventional copper winding, the rotor with superconductor, and the rotating cryocooler designed from the on-board concept. The rotor is fabricated as the race-track coil with 2G, YBCO tape and contacts with the on-board cryocooler while being rotated together. An inline-type pulse tube refrigerator is used as the on-board cryocooler. The cryocooler is fabricated from optimal process to satisfy the structure and thermal stability of the on-board system. Each component is integrated according to carefully defined sequence. Specially, a combining method of torque tubes is an important part for sustaining stability of the rotor and the cryocooler. In the rotating test, the HTS motor is successfully operated with 240 rpm of rotating speed when 75 A current is supplied to the superconducting rotor. In this paper, potential problems of the HTS motor system using the on-board cryocooler are proposed and solved, and realistic possibility of this concept is also confirmed.

  • This paper presents an implementation of a direct active and reactive power control for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), which is applied to a wind generation system as an alternative to the classical field-oriented control (FOC). The FOC has a complex control structure that consists of a current controller, a power controller and frame transformations. The performance of the FOC depends highly on parameter variations of the rotor and stator resistances and the inductances. The proposed direct power control (DPC) method produces a fast and robust power response without the need of complex structure and algorithms. One drawback, however, is its high power ripple during a steady state. In this paper, active and reactive power controllers and space-vector modulation (SVM) are combined to replace hysteresis controllers used in the original DPC drive, resulting in a fixed switching frequency of the power converter. Simulation results with the FOC and DPC for a 3kW DFIG are given and discussed, and the experimental results of a test involving identical machines are presented to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed control strategy.

  • This paper deals with design and analysis of surface-mounted PM (SPM) motor for compressor of air-conditioning system for electric vehicle applications according to slot/pole combination. First, required torque-speed curve characteristics are determined from operating conditions of the compressor. Restricted conditions such as motor size limit and current density are also determined. And then, under same rated and restricted conditions, twelve models which have different slot/pole combinations each other are designed for various pole arc/pitch ratio using simple equations and 2-d finite element (FE) analyses. Designed models are analyzed and compared in terms of back-emf THD, cogging torque, torque ripple, power losses, efficiency, etc. On the basis of analysis results, it is found that the motor with a 6-pole PM rotor and a 27-slot stator has most outstanding performances in electromagnetic aspects. Finally, through the mechanical modal analysis and demagnetization analysis, it is concluded that the determined motor is most suitable for the compressor of air-conditioning system for electric vehicles.

  • Fast and accurate fault diagnosis of the position sensor is of great significance to ensure the reliability as well as sensor fault tolerant operation of the Switched Reluctance Wind Generator (SRWG). This paper presents a fault diagnostic scheme for a SRWG based on the residual between the estimated rotor position and the actual output of the position sensor. Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), which could build a nonlinear mapping among flux linkage, current and rotor position, is utilized to design an assembled estimator for the rotor position detection. The data for building the ELM based assembled position estimator is derived from the magnetization curves which are obtained from Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of an SRWG with the structure of 8 stator poles and 6 rotor poles. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed fault diagnosis method are verified by simulation at various operating conditions. The results provide a feasible theoretical and technical basis for the effective condition monitoring and predictive maintenance of SRWG.

  • A 50kW-4000rpm interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) applied to the high-performance electric vehicle (EV) is introduced in this paper. The main work of this paper is that a 2-D T-type lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN) model is presented for IPMSM temperature rise calculation. Thermal conductance matrix equation is generated based on calculated thermal resistance and loss. Thus the temperature of each node is obtained by solving thermal conductance matrix. Then a 3-D liquid-solid coupling model is built to compare with the 2-D T-type LPTN model. Finally, an experimental platform is established to verify the above-mentioned methods, which obtains the measured efficiency map and current wave at rated load case and overload case. Thermocouple PTC100 is used to measure the temperature of the stator winding and iron core, and the FLUKE infrared-thermal-imager is applied to measure the surface temperature of IPMSM and controller. Test results show that the 2-D T-type LPTN model have a high accuracy to predict each part temperature.

  • Along with the development of power electronics and magnetic materials, permanent magnet (PM) brushless direct current (BLDC) motors are now widely used in many fields of modern industry BLDC motors have many advantages such as high efficiency, large peak torque, easy control of speed, and reliable working characteristics. However, Compared with the other electric motors without a PM, BLDC motors with a PM have inherent cogging torque. It is often a principle source of vibration, noise and difficulty of control in BLDC motors. Cogging torque which is produced by the interaction of the rotor magnetic flux and angular variation in the stator magnetic reluctance can be reduced by sinusoidal air-gap flux density waveform due to reduction of variation of magnetic reluctance. Therefore, this paper will present a design method of magnetizing system for reduction of cogging torque and low manufacturing cost of BLDC motor with isotropic bonded neodynium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) magnets in ring type by sinusoidal air-gap flux density distribution. An analytical technique of magnetization makes use of two-dimensional finite element method (2-D FEM) and Preisach model that expresses the hysteresis phenomenon of magnetic materials in order for accurate calculation. In addition, For optimum design of magnetizing fixture, Factorial design which is one of the design of experiments (DOE) is used.

  • This paper explains the effects of the weak signal of a rotating-type electric field mill sensor fabricated for measuring the intensity of the electric field generated by high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission lines. The fabricated field mill consists of two isolated electrode vanes, a motor driver, and a ground part. The sensor plate is exposed to and shielded from the electric field by means of a rotary shutter consisting of a motor-driven mechanically complementary rotor/stator pair. When the uncharged sensor plate is exposed to an electric field, it becomes charged. The rotating electrode consists of several conductive vanes and is connected to the ground part, so that it is shielded. Determining the appropriate design variables such as the speed of the vane, its shape, and the distance between the two electrodes, is essential for ensuring optimal performance. By varying the speed, the weak signal characteristics which is used to signal processing and calibration experiment are quite different. Each weak signal pattern was analyzed along with the output voltage characteristics, in order to be able to determine the intensity of the electric field generated by HVDC power transmission lines with accuracy.

  • This paper deals with the modeling and simulation to control the torque and speed of an induction motor using field-oriented control methods. Rotor flux is estimated using the indirect sensing method based on the rotor circuit equation in the synchronously rotation reference frame, and slip angle and rotor position are calculated from rotor angular velocity and stator current. As results of modeling and digital simulation with a voltage source inverter, it is shown that the proposed scheme gives good static and dynamic performance to the induction motor drive.

  • This paper presents the demagnetization and iron loss analysis of the single phase Flux Reversal Machine. It has a magnetic configuration similar to the switched reluctance machine but with multipole permanent magnets of alternate polarity on each stator salient pole embraced by concentrated coils. But it can be demagnetized by sudden over current and core losses increase because switching frequency is getting faster. This paper show demagnetization of permanent magnet and iron loss characteristic, and proposed a solution.

  • This paper presents analysis, design and simulation for the indirect field orientation control (IFOC) of induction machine drive system. The dynamic performance of the IFOC under nominal and detuned parameters of the induction machine is established. A conventional proportional plus integral-derivative (PI-D) two-degree-of-freedom controller (2DOFC) is designed and analysed for an ideal IFOC induction machine drive at nominal parameters with the desired dynamic response. Varying the induction machine parameters causes a degredation in the dynamic response for disturbance rejection and tracking performance with PI-D 2DOF speed controller. Therefore, conventional controllers can nut meet a wide range of speed tracking performance under parameter variations. To achieve high- dynamic performance, a proposed robust fuzzy logic controllers (RFLC) for d-axis rotor flux, d-q axis stator currents and rotor speed have been designed and analysed. These controllers provide robust tracking and disturbance rejection performance when detuning occurres and improve the dynamic behavior. The proposed REL controllers provide a fast and accurate dynamic response in tracking and disturbance rejection characteristics under parameter variations. Computer simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed REL controllers and a robust performance is obtained fur IFOC induction machine drive system.
