  • Many statistical methods have been adapted for terminology recognition to improve its accuracy. However, since previous studies have been carried out in a single core or a single machine, they have difficulties in real-time analysing explosively increasing documents. In this study, the task where bottlenecks occur in the process of terminology recognition is classified into linguistic processing in the process of 'candidate terminology extraction' and collection of statistical information in the process of 'terminology weight assignment'. A terminology recognition system is implemented and experimented to address each task by means of the distributed parallel processing-based MapReduce. The experiments were performed in two ways; the first experiment result revealed that distributed parallel processing by means of 12 nodes improves processing speed by 11.27 times as compared to the case of using a single machine and the second experiment was carried out on 1) default environment, 2) multiple reducers, 3) combiner, and 4) the combination of 2)and 3), and the use of 3) showed the best performance. Our terminology recognition system contributes to speed up knowledge extraction of large scale science and technology documents.

  • Various definitions and terminology applied to measurement in analytical chemistry are not always consistent. But, internationally integrated terminology and interpretation of definitions play an essential role in analytical chemistry fields. The review in this paper focused on problems associated with terminology, definitions, statistical theories, and practical performance of calibration and validation.

  • The objective of this research is the development of the Automatic Subjective Assessment System (ASAS). The proposed subjective assessment system is designed to evaluate human emotion and sensibility (or "gamsung" in Korean terminology) with subjective responses of volunteers about the experiment of emotion and sensibility. Once volunteers enter their subjective responses about the experiment into the developed system, the proposed system can automatically generate statistical results of human emotion and sensibility using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Then, the system stores the statistical results in the database which will be open to public through internet. The proposed system will be integrated into the universal" gamsung" assessment system for evaluation of human emotion and sensibility.

  • This paper reviews the most central analytical and methodological issues that arise in developing national STI strategies. First, an outline of the relationship between national innovation systems and the strategic dimension is presented. The paper shows that science, technology and innovation strategy are often used in different forms and that there is no common understanding yet of the actual meaning and coverage of these strategies. The paper develops the terminology from a discussion of different approaches towards company innovation processes analyzing their evolution in different socioeconomic environments and the role and impact of science, technology and innovation policy on company innovation processes. Based on this conceptual understanding the paper defines national science, technology, innovation, and STI strategy and explains the basic terminology. From these definitions, the strategic dimension including the impact on the stakeholders is discussed. It is shown that a major success factor for STI strategy development is the involvement of stakeholders to vary and extend their use of their portfolio of instruments. Moreover it becomes evident that stakeholders follow their own interests which aren't necessarily in the interest of the national STI strategies. The analysis shows advantages and disadvantages as well as potentials and limitations of different approaches to develop STI strategies in their ability to describe the reality of innovation processes and to allow conclusions about the relationship between innovation policy and the innovation processes implemented by companies. It is shown that knowledge of these limitations is an important factor to consider in designing consistent and coherent national STI policy which aims at supporting innovation eventually. Finally the paper concludes that the STI policy mix concept needs a more systemic development approach which is integrated in the national STI strategy development and implementation.

  • In this paper, we have proposed Auto-TUS, an automatic transcription module of three union symbols-hyphen, dash and tilde (‘’, ‘―’, ‘∼’)-using their linguistic contexts. Few previous studies have discussed the problems of ambiguities in transcribing symbols into Korean alphabetic letters. We have classified six different reading formulae of the union symbols, analyzed the left and right contexts of the symbols, and investigated selection rules and distributions between the symbols and their contexts. Based on these linguistic features, 86 stereotyped patterns, 78 rules and 8 heuristics determining the types of reading formulae are suggested for Auto-TUS. This module works modularly in three steps. The pilot test was conducted with three test suites, which contains respectively 418, 987 and 1,014 clusters of words containing a union symbol. Encouraging results of 97.36%, 98.48%, 96.55% accuracy were obtained for three test suites. Our next phases are to develop a guessing routine for unknown contexts of the union symbols by using statistical information; to refine the proper nouns and terminology detecting module; and to apply Auto-TUS on a larger scale.

  • A statistical analysis of the diagnostic value for 244 aspiration biopsy cytology(ABC) among a total 1,043 cases from various sites was performed. ABC, using diagnostic terminology similar to that of a surgical pathology reports, was compared to the final tissue diagnosis. For the entire series, a sensitivity of 91.8%, a specificity of 99.3%, a positive predictive value of 98.9%, a negative predictive value of 94,8%, and an efficacy of the test of 96.3% were shown. There were 8 false negative and 1 false positive diagnosis. The diagnostic accuracy was 89.8%. Those results indicate that the ABC is a considerably highly accurate procedure that should be routinely employed.

  • A stochastic process {$A_n$, n = 1, 2, ...} is an arithmetic process (AP) if there exists some real number, d, so that {$A_n$ + (n-1)d, n =1, 2, ...} is a renewal process (RP). AP is a stochastically monotonic process and can be used for modeling a point process, i.e. point events occurring in a haphazard way in time (or space), especially with a trend. For example, the vents may be failures arising from a deteriorating machine; and such a series of failures id distributed haphazardly along a time continuum. In this paper, we discuss estimation procedures for an AP, similar to those for a geometric process (GP) proposed by Lam (1992). Two statistics are suggested for testing whether a given process is an AP. If this is so, we can estimate the parameters d, ${\mu}_{A1}$ and ${\sigma}^{2}_{A1}$ of the AP based on the techniques of simple linear regression, where ${\mu}_{A1}$ and ${\sigma}^2_{A1}$ are the mean and variance of the first random variable $A_1$ respectively. In this paper, the procedures are, for the most part, discussed in reliability terminology. Of course, the methods are valid in any area of application, in which case they should be interpreted accordingly.
