  • Today, newspapers and newsmagazines are using statistical graphics to provide information and highlight the essense of newspaper stories. When statistical graphics do not present meaningful information accurately, concisely, and in easy-to-understand language, the publication risks a loss of credibility with its readers. Too often newspapers and newsmagazine run faulty graphics. The surge in the use of statistical graphics have created new problems and challengers for editors and artists of newspapers and magazines. We summerize and study the misuse of statistical graphics by means of the research of newspaper and newsmagazine. Experiments were employed to explore the effects of the distorted graphs. This paper suggests the statistical rules for avoiding the pitfalls of statistical graphics and institutional solutions for reforming the knowledge of artists and readers about statistical graphics.

  • The statistical graphics is a design field focusing on the user perception aspects for the correct information delivery and the effective understanding, with the use of the quantitative data through the information analysis, extraction, visualization process. The statistical graphics with the big data composition factor is termed as the statistical big data graphics. In the statistical graphics the visual factors are used to reduce the errors in the perception part and to successfully deliver the information. However, in the statistical big data graphics the visual factors of the enormous data are causing the cognitive discouragements. The purpose of this study is to extract the cognitive discouragement factors from the big data statistical graphics, categorizing the types of the statistical big data graphics as 'network type', 'segment type', and 'mixed type', based on their compositional shapes, and explored the characteristics according to them. Especially, based on the visual main factors in the statistical big data graphics, We extracted the cognitive discouragement factors that appear in the high visualization as the four categories: 'multi-dimensional cases', 'various color', 'information overlap', and 'legibility of the writing'.

  • It is well known that graphical display is critical to data analysis. A lot of research for data visualization has been done, so many effective graphical tools are now available. With the proper use of these graphical tools, we can penetrate the complex structure of data set easily. To enjoy the benefit of the powerful graphical display, the choice of the statistical software is very crucial. R is a popular open source software tool for statistical analysis and graphics, and can provide the very powerful graphics facilities. Moreover, many researchers believe that R is the best software for statistical graphics. In this paper, we would like to discuss what we teach and how we teach in statistical graphics course using R.

  • SAS/GRAPH is a part of the SAS System which generates information and presentation color graphics. It is able to import any SAS dataset from other statistical data analysis procedures and produce sophisticated graphics output. It also supports most output devices on the market and offers various tools enhancing graphics output. In this regard SAS/GRAPH outclasses its compertitors. However, it does not support an interactive tool for data visualization and graphical data analysis. As far as interactive statistical graphics is concerned, SAS/GRAPH is behind in features and functions, compared to newly emerged statsitical graphics software such as S-Plus.

  • R is an open source language for statistical computing and graphics based on the ACM software award-winning S language. R is widely used for data analysis and has become a major vehicle for making available new statistical methodology. This paper presents an overview of the design philosophy and the development model for R, reviews the basic capabilities of the system, and outlines some current projects that will influence future developments of R.

  • Computer graphics approach is a powerful tool when we are to explore the effects of the change of a part of the data, or the effects of the alteration of the characteristics of the statistical model currently employed. The paper describes the methods to implement dynamic graphics for the process of analysis of variance, and the methods to graphically represent ANOVA type data. The paper the describes a dynamic graphics software developed by the author for two-way ANOVA model.

  • The increase in computing power and the decrease in price of computers has enabled statistical computer graphics to progress tremendously in recent years. Many people can now access to the newly developed computer graphical methods easily. The direct manipulation on screen and the symultaneous realization of the results are two main ingradients of dynamic graphics. We compare the dynamic graphical features in two relatively new packages; SPLUS and XLISP-STAT. XLISP-STAT is very lean packed with powerful dynamic graphical tools. The statistical computer graphics, being still in the state of infancy, has a lot of room to grow, and is a new research area with a great potential.

  • The goal of this study was to contemplate the impact of emotional elements of motion graphics on the brand preference in websites of TV products. To attain the goal, the emotional elements of motion graphics in websites of TV products, i.e., color, graphic image, typography, and layout, were set as independent variables and the brand preference as a dependent variable. The variables were analyzed objectively. Samples were collected from selected design students attending technical colleges. Among 282 samples collected, 15 were discarded as unfeasible and the remaining 267 were used in the analysis. Statistical analysis techniques used in the study included factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis; and 'SPSS Win. 11.5' was used to perform the statistical analysis. From the analysis, the following two results were obtained. First, it appeared that emotional elements of motion graphics appeared in websites of TV products exerted statistically significant impacts on the brand preference. Second, the element exerting the most significant impact on the brand preference among the emotional elements were appeared as 'graphic image' and 'color'. Thus, it was concluded that it is necessary to give priority in 'graphic image' and 'color' to enhance the brand preference.

  • This study is about the dynamic graphics which can be used for the exploration of the characteristics of data comprising discrete and continuous variables. Simultaneously using line mosaic plot for the relation of discrete variables and box plot together with scatter plot for the relation of continuous variables, we have applied dynamic methods among these plots to demonstrate that the structure and characteristics of the multivariate data could be easily analyzed.

  • Statistical graphics have been important new tools for data analysis and many statistical softwares are exploiting graphical methods. Among these softwares available in personal computer at low cost, we intriduce S-PLUS(version 2.0). S-PLUS is an interactive graphical data analysis system and object-oriented programming language. SAS/GRAPH is another popular graphical system for displaying data in the form of color plots, charts, maps, and slides on screen and hardcopy devices. S-PLUS is compared to SAS/GRAPH(version 6.04) in viewpoints of statistical graphics.
