  • The concept of performance based seismic design has been gradually accepted by the earthquake engineering profession recently, in which the cost-effectiveness criterion is one of the most important principles and more attention is paid to the structural performance at the inelastic stage. Since there are many uncertainties in seismic design, reliability analysis is a major task in performance based seismic design. However, structural reliability analysis may be very costly and time consuming because the limit state function is usually a highly nonlinear implicit function with respect to the basic design variables, especially for the complex large-scale structures for dynamic and nonlinear analysis. Understanding statistical properties of the structural inelastic deformation, which is the aim of the present paper, is helpful to develop an efficient approximate approach of reliability analysis. The present paper studies the statistical properties of the maximum elastoplastic story drift of steel frames subjected to earthquake load. The randomness of earthquake load, dead load, live load, steel elastic modulus, yield strength and structural member dimensions are considered. Possible probability distributions for the maximum story are evaluated using K-S test. The results show that the choice of the probability distribution for the maximum elastoplastic story drift of steel frames is related to the mean value of the maximum elastoplastic story drift. When the mean drift is small (less than 0.3%), an extreme value type I distribution is the best choice. However, for large drifts (more than 0.35%), an extreme value type II distribution is best.

  • In this paper, we propose 128bits chaotic block encryption scheme using a PLCM(Piece-wise Linear Chaotic Map) having a good dynamical property. The proposed scheme has a block size of 128 bits and a key size of 128 bits. In proposed scheme we use four 32bi1s sub-keys of session key and four 32bit sub-blocks of block to decide the initial value and the number of iteration of PLCM. The encrypted code is generated from the output of PLCM. With results of test and analyses of security we show the proposed scheme is very secure against statistical attacks and have very good Avalanche Effect and Randomness properties.

  • We present a random bit generator that uses fingerprint image as the source of random, and the random bit generator is the first generator in the world that uses biometric information for the source of random in the world. The generator produces, on the average, 9,334 bits a fingerprint image in 0.03 second, and the produced bit sequence passes all 16 statistical tests that are recommended by NIST for testing the randomness.

  • Pseudorandom numbers are useful in cryptographic operations for using as nonce, initial vector, secret key, etc. Security of the cryptosystem relies on the secret key parameters, so a good pseudorandom number is needed. In this paper, we have proposed a new approach for generation of pseudorandom number. This method uses the three dimensional combinational puzzle Rubik Cube for generation of random numbers. The number of possible combinations of the cube approximates to 43 quintillion. The large possible combination of the cube increases the complexity of brute force attack on the generator. The generator uses cryptographic hash function. Chaotic map is being employed for increasing random behavior. The pseudorandom sequence generated can be used for cryptographic applications. The generated sequences are tested for randomness using NIST Statistical Test Suite and other testing methods. The result of the tests and analysis proves that the generated sequences are random.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the techniques or analyzing tobacco smoke by statistical treatment method for the analytical data through Asia Collaborative Study V. In addition to five smoke components analysis, consisting of TPM, water, nicotine, NFDPM, and puff count of four cigarettes samples, statistical parameters such as mean, standard deviation, box-and-whisker plots, h plots, k plots, regression coefficients, reproducibility (R), and repeatability (r) were also calculated. Analysis of water content of cigarette smoke was the most difficult task, whereas puff count analysis was the easiest as well recognized by all laboratories. Analysis of nicotine and puff count accounted for both the lowest and the highest variation among four parameters. The water coefficients indicated more randomness or variation in the slops. The NFDPM data exhibited both types of deviations from linearity. Water content of sample D indicated the highest difference between two single results and between two interlaboratory test results. As a whole, KGTRI ranked higher in the analytical techniques for statistical evaluation of results when compared with the practices of 28 other laboratories.

  • In this study, various time series are analyzed to check nonlinearities of the data. The nonlinearity of a system can be investigated by testing the randomness of the time series data. To test the randomness, four nonparametric test statistics and a new test statistic, called the BDS statistic are used and the results and the results are compared. The Brock, Dechert, and Scheinkman (BDS) statistic is originated from the statistical properties of the correlation integral which is used for searching for chaos and has been shown very effective in distinguishing nonlinear structures in dynamic systems from random structures. As a result of application to linear and nonlinear models which are well known, the BDS statistic is found to be more effective than nonparametric test statistics in identifying nonlinear structure in the time series. Hydrologic time series data are fitted to ARMA type models and the statistics are applied to the residuals. The results show that the BDS statistic can distinguish chaotic nonlinearity from randomness and that the BDS statistic can also be used for verifying the validity of the fitted model.

  • This paper describes a new parameter for voice activity detection which serves as a front-end part for automatic speech recognition systems. The new parameter called run-ratio is derived from the runs test statistic which is used in the statistical test for randomness of a given sequence. The run-ratio parameter has the property that the values of the parameter for the random sequence are about 1. To apply the run-ratio parameter into the voice activity detection method, it is assumed that the samples of an inputted audio signal should be converted to binary sequences of positive and negative values. Then, the silence region in the audio signal can be regarded as random sequences so that their values of the run-ratio would be about 1. The run-ratio for the voiced region has far lower values than 1 and for fricative sounds higher values than 1. Therefore, the parameter can discriminate speech signals from the background sounds by using the newly derived run-ratio parameter. The proposed voice activity detector outperformed the conventional energy-based detector in the sense of error mean and variance, small deviation from true speech boundaries, and low chance of missing real utterances

  • A statistical test was carried out on the IID (Independently and Identically Distributed) assumption of the AM (Annual Maxima) data used to estimate the design wave height. The test was divided into independence (randomness) test and homogeneity test, and each test was conducted on AM data of 210 and 310 stations in coastal and inner coastal grids in typhoon and non-typhoon (monsoon) conditions. As a result of the independence test, the rejection ratios of the test are in the range of 1.8~5.3% and 1.4~6.0% for the non-typhoon and typhoon data sets, respectively. On the other hand, in the distribution difference test of typhoon data and nontyphoon data, the same distribution hypothesis was found to be rejected in the range of 47~79% according to the test method for both coastal grid and inner coastal grid. Therefore, in estimating design wave height by extreme value analysis, the estimation process by dividing the typhoon and non-typhoon data is appropriate.

  • Random numbers are used in many sorts of applications. Some applications, like simple software simulation tests, communication protocol verifications, cryptography verification and so forth, need various levels of randomness with various process speeds. In this paper, we propose a fast pseudorandom generator module for embedded systems. The generator module is implemented in hardware which can run in two modes, one of which can generate random numbers with higher randomness but which requires six cycles, the other providing its result within one cycle but with less randomness. An ASIP (Application Specific Instruction set Processor) was designed to implement the proposed pseudorandom generator instruction sets. We designed a processor based on the MIPS architecture,, by using LISA, and have run statistical tests passing the sequence of the Diehard test suite. The HDL models of the processor were generated using CoWare's Processor Designer and synthesized into the Dong-bu 0.18um CMOS cell library using the Synopsys Design Compiler. With the proposed pseudorandom generator module, random number generation performance was 239% faster than software model, but the area increased only 2.0% of the proposed ASIP.
