  • The double sampling scheme is effective in reducing the sampling cost. However, the doubly sampled data is contaminated by two types of error, namely false-positive and false-negative errors. These would make the statistical analysis more difficult, and it would require more sophisticate analysis tools. For instance, the Wald method for the interval estimation of a proportion would not work well. In fact, it is well known that the Wald confidence interval behaves very poorly in many sampling schemes. In this note, the property of the Wald interval is investigated in terms of the coverage probability and the expected width. An alternative confidence interval based on the Agresti-Coull's approach is recommended.

  • In interim analysis, group sequential tests are widely used for the ethical, scientific, and economic reasons. In this paper, we propose the group sequential tests using both type I and type II error spending rate functions when the response variable is discrete, especially binomial distribution, in the interim analysis. In addition, we propose new error spending rate function which covers the formerly proposed. Our method has good property that is flexible, fast and easily applicable. A numerical simulations are carried out to evaluate our method and it shows good performance.

  • Brain potential is described by using Euler Lagrange equation derived from Lagrangian based on SMNI(Statistical Mechanics of Neocortical Interaction). It is assumed that excitatory neuron firing is amplitude-modulated dominantly by the sum of two modes of frequency ${\omega}and 2 {\omega}$ . Time series of this neuron firing is numerically calculated. $I_{L}$related to low frequency distribution of power spectrum, $I_{H}$high frequency, and S(standard deviation) are introduced for the effective extraction of the dynamic property in this simulated brain potential. $I_{L}$,$I_{H}$, and S are obtained from EEG of 4 persons in rest state and are compared with thoretical results. It is of importance in various fields related to human well-being such as comfort-pursued industrial design, psychology, medicine to characterize human emotional states by EEG analysis. The pleasant and unpleasant sensation among various emotional states would be demonstrated to be determined in terms of ${\epsilon}$ and ${\gamma}$ parameters estimated by the simulated $I_{L}$-$I_{H}$-S relations.

  • The mechanical properties of concrete such as compressive strength, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity, are considerably influenced by various factors including locality. The material property prescriptions in national concrete design codes should reflect them. In Korea, they have not been studied systematically yet. A new performance-based design code is being prepared in Korea as a government-supported project and it has a plan to make new material prescriptions adopting domestic research results. As a starting point for the research on material properties, the statistical characteristics of mechanical properties of concrete are studied. In this paper, a probabilistic model of compressive strength, relationship between compressive strength and splitting tensile strength and compressive strength and elastic modulus are proposed based on experimental data.

  • Drainage density, defined as the degree to which a landscape is dissected by streams, is a fundamental property of natural terrain that reflect the comprehensive morphologic response of watershed. In this study the spatial variability of drainage density is analyzed by statistical approach to it and its plotting method is proposed. Overland flow length is confirmed to be a highly variable spatial factor from the result of statistical analysis. Distribution map of drainage density based on spatial autocorrelation length in this study would be a superior tool to the classical definition of drainage density.

  • A methodology for determining the design allowables of composite laminates by using lamina level test data and finite element analysis (FEA) is proposed and verified in this paper. An existing method that yields the laminate design allowables by using the complete test results for laminates was improved to reduce the expensive and time-consuming tests. Input property samples for FEA were generated after considering the statistical distribution characteristics of lamina level test data., and design allowables were derived from several FEA analyses of laminates. To apply and verify the proposed method, Hexcel 8552 IM7 test data were used. For both un-notched and open-hole laminate configurations, it was found that the design allowables obtained from the analysis correctly predicted the laminate test data within the confidence interval. The potential of the present simulation to substitute the laminate tests was demonstrated well.

  • It is very important to construct statistical model in order to exactly estimate the signal variance from the noisy image. By using estimated variance of original image, in general, Wiener filter is constructed, and it is applied to the noisy image. In this paper, we propose a new statistical mixture modeling of wavelet coefficients for image denoising. Firstly, a simple classification method is used to construct a significance map that captures significant property of wavelet coefficients. Based upon the significance map, the state probabilities of mixture model is computed, and signal variance is estimated by using them. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields 0.1-0.2㏈ higher PSNR than conventional methods for image denoising.

  • Serratiopeptidase (SRP), a 50 kDa metalloprotease produced from Serratia marcescens species, is a drug with potent anti-inflammatory property. In this study, a powerful statistical design, evolutionary operation (EVOP), was applied to optimize the media composition for SRP production in shake-flask culture of Serratia marcescens NRRL B-23112. Initially, factors such as inoculum size, initial pH, carbon source, and organic nitrogen source were optimized using one factor at a time. The most significant medium components affecting the production of SRP were identified as maltose, soybean meal, and $K_2HPO_4$. The SRP so produced was not found to be dependent on whey protein, but rather was notably induced by most of the organic nitrogen sources used in the study and free from other concomitant protease contaminant, as revealed by protease inhibition study. In addition, experiments were performed using different sets of EVOP design with each factor varied at three levels. The experimental data were analyzed with a standard set of statistical formula. The EVOP-optimized medium, with maltose 4.5%, soybean meal 6.5%, $K_2HPO_4$ 0.8%, and NaCl 0.5% (w/v), gave a SRP production of 7,333 EU/ml, which was 17-fold higher than the unoptimized media. The application of EVOP resulted in significant enhancement of SRP production.

  • Projection that can be used as a feature for image representation, includes much available informations such as approximated shape and location. But when we retrieve image using it, there are some disadvantage such as requiring much index data and making different length of projected vector for differenr image size. In order to overcome these problems, we propose a method of using block variance for the projected vector. We use block variance of the projection vector to localize the characteristics of image and to reduce the number of index data in database. Proposed algorithm can make use of statistical advantage through database including various size of images and be executed with fast response time in implementation.

  • Water distribution pipes installed underground have potential risks of pipe failure and burst. After years of use, pipe walls tend to be corroded due to aggressive soil environments where they are located. The present study aims to assess the degree of external corrosion of a distribution pipe network. In situ data obtained through test pit excavation and direct sampling are carefully collated and assessed. A statistical approach is useful to predict severity of pipe corrosion at present and in future. First, criteria functions defined by discriminant function analysis are formulated to judge whether the pipes are seriously corroded. Data utilized in the analyses are those related to soil property, i.e., soil resistivity, pH, water content, and chloride ion. Secondly, corrosion factors that significantly affect pipe wall pitting (vertical) and spread (horizontal) on the pipe surface are identified with a view to quantifying a degree of the pipe corrosion. Finally, a most reliable model represented in the form of a multiple regression equation is developed for this purpose. From these analyses, it can be concluded that our proposed model is effective to predict the severity and rate of pipe corrosion utilizing selected factors that reflect the fuzzy soil environment.
