  • The elimination of chatter vibration is necessary to improve the precision and the productivity of the cutting operation. A new mathematical model of chatter vibration is presented in order to predict the dynamic cutting force from the static cutting data. The dynamic cutting force is analytically expressed by the static cutting coefficient and the dynamic cutting coefficient which can be determined from the cutting mechanics. The stability analysis is carried out by a two degree of freedom system. The chatter experiments are conducted by exciting the cutting tool with an impact hammer during an orthogonal cutting. A good agreement is shown between the stability limits predicted by theory and the critical width of cut determined by experiments.

  • Dynamic load and static load tests are performed on steel pipe piles and concrete piles at five construction sites in highway to compare the difference of load bearing mechanisms. At each site, one steel pile is instrumented with electric strain gages and dynamic tests are performed on the pile during installation. Damages of strain gages due to the installation are checked and static test is performed upon the same pile after two or seven days as well. It shows that load transfer from side friction to base resistance behaves somewhat differently according to the results of load-settlement analysis obtained from PDA and static load test. Initial elastic stage of load settlement curves of two load tests is almost similar. But after the yielding point, dynamic resistance of pile behaves more stiffer than static resistance, thus, dynamic load test result might overestimate the real pile capacity compared with static result. Analysis of gage readings shows that unit skin friction increases exponentially with depth. The skin friction is mobilized at the 1∼2m above the pile tip and contributes to the considerable side resistance. Comparison of side and base resistances between the measured value and the calculated value by Meyerhof's bearing capacity equation using SPT N value shows that the calculated base resistance is higher than the measured. Therefore, contribution of side resistance to total capacity shouldn't be ignored or underestimated. Finally, based upon the overall test results, a construction control procedure is suggested.

  • The static and dynamic structural integrity qualification was performed through the seismic analysis of a small-size Savonius-type vertical wind turbine at dead weight plus wind load and seismic loads. The ANSYS finite element program was used to develop the FEM model of the wind turbine and to accomplish static, modal, and dynamic frequency response analyses. The stress of the wind turbine structure for each wind load and dead weight was calculated and combined by taking the square root of the sum of the squares (SRSS) to obtain static stresses. Seismic response spectrum analysis was also carried out in the horizontal (X and Y) and vertical (Z) directions to determine the response stress distribution for the required response spectrum (RRS) at safe-shutdown earthquake with a 5% damping (SSE-5%) condition. The stress resulting from the seismic analysis in each of the three directions was combined with the SRSS to yield dynamic stresses. These static and dynamic stresses were summed by using the same SRSS. Finally, this total stress was compared with the allowable stress design, which was calculated based on the requirements of the KBC 2009, KS C IEC 61400-1, and KS C IEC 61400-2 codes.

  • This paper presents a quasi-static optimization technique for elastic structures under dynamic loads. An equivalent static load (ESL) set is defined as a static load set which generates the same displacement field as that from a dynamic load at a certain time. Multiple ESL sets calculated at every time step are employed to represent the various states of the structure under the dynamic load. They can cover every critical state that might happen at an arbitrary time. Continuous characteristics of dynamic load are simulated by multiple discontinuous ones of static loads. The calculated sets of ESLs are applied as a multiple loading condition in the optimization process. A design cycle is defined as a circulated process between an analysis domain and a design domain. Design cycles are repeated until a design converges. The analysis domain gives a loading condition necessary for the design domain. The design domain gives a new updated design to be verified by the analysis domain in the next design cycle. This iterative process is quite similar to that of the multidisciplinary optimization technique. Even though the global convergence cannot be guaranteed, the proposed technique makes it possible to optimize the structures under dynamic loads. It has also applicability, flexibility, and reliability.

  • In this paper, a multi-step optimization using a G.A. (Genetic Algorithm) with variable penalty function is introduced to the structural design optimization of a 5-head route machine. Our design procedure consist of two design optimization stage. The first stage of the design optimization is static design optimization. The following stage is dynamic design optimization stage. In the static optimization stage, the static compliance and weight of the structure are minimized simultaneously under some dimensional constraints and deflection limits. On the other hand, the dynamic compliance and the weight of the machine structure are minimized simultaneously in the dynamic design optimization stage. As the results, dynamic compliance of the 5-head router machine was decreased by about 37% and the weight of the structure was decreased by 4.48% respectively compared with the simplified structure model.

  • The static and dynamic analyses of simply supported beams are studied by using the U-transformation method and the finite difference method. When the beam is divided into the mesh of equal elements, the mesh may be treated as a periodic structure. After an equivalent cyclic periodic system is established, the difference governing equation for such an equivalent system can be uncoupled by applying the U-transformation. Therefore, a set of single-degree-of-freedom equations is formed. These equations can be used to obtain exact analytical solutions of the deflections, bending moments, buckling loads, natural frequencies and dynamic responses of the beam subjected to particular loads or excitations. When the number of elements approaches to infinity, the exact error expression and the exact convergence rates of the difference solutions are obtained. These exact results cannot be easily derived if other methods are used instead.

  • This paper researches static and dynamic bending behaviors of a crystalline nano-size shell having pores and grains in the framework of strain gradient elasticity. Thus, the nanoshell is made of a multi-phase porous material for which all material properties on dependent on the size of grains. Also, in order to take into account small size effects much accurately, the surface energies related to grains and pores have been considered. In order to take into account all aforementioned factors, a micro-mechanical procedure has been applied for describing material properties of the nanoshell. A numerical trend is implemented to solve the governing equations and derive static and dynamic deflections. It will be proved that the static and dynamic deflections of the crystalline nanoshell rely on pore size, grain size, pore percentage, load location and strain gradient coefficient.

  • The analysis of an air spring characteristics is necessary to design and control automotive air suspension system properly. A mathematical model of an air spring was derived in light of energy conservation first. Then static and dynamic experiments of the air spring have been fulfilled. The static stiffness with various initial pressures and effective areas were obtained from the static experimental results. Theoretical static stiffness obtained by using the mathematical model and effective area data is in close accordance with the experimental estimation. The dynamic experimental results show that the hysteresis in displacement-force cycle decreases when the frequency of the harmonic displacement excitation signal increases, but it does not change too much as the frequency is higher than 1Hz. And the dynamic stiffness goes up with increasing of the initial pressure and the excitation frequency.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a new efficient strategy that uses the Vector form Intrinsic Finite-element (VFIFE) method to conduct the static and dynamic analyses of marine pipes. Nonlinear problems, such as large displacement, small strain, and contact and collision, can be analyzed using a unified calculation process in the VFIFE method according to the fundamental theories of point value description, path element, and reverse motion. This method enables analysis without the need to integrate the stiffness matrix of the structure, because only motion equations of particles established according to Newton's second law are required. These characteristics of the VFIFE facilitate the modeling and computation efficiencies in analyzing the nonlinear dynamic problem of flexible pipe with large deflections. In this study, a three-dimensional (3-D) dynamical model based on 3-D beam element was established according to the VFIFE method. The deep-sea flexible pipe was described by a set of spatial mass particles linked by 3-D beam element. The motion and configuration of the pipe are determined by these spatial particles. Based on this model, a simulation procedure to predict the 3-D dynamical behavior of flexible pipe was developed and verified. It was found that the spatial configuration and static internal force of the mining pipe can be obtained by calculating the stationary state of pipe motion. Using this simulation procedure, an analysis was conducted on the static and dynamic behaviors of the flexible mining pipe based on a 1000-m sea trial system. The results of the analysis proved that the VFIFE method can be efficiently applied to the static and dynamic analyses of marine pipes.
