The corrosion of steel reinforcement in reinforced concrete bridge decks significantly affects the degradation of the capacity. Due to the advantageous characteristics such as high tensile strength and non-corrosive property, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) has been gathering much interest from designers and engineers for possible usage as a alternative reinforcement for a steel reinforcing bar. However, its application has not been widespread, because there data for short- and long-term performance data of FRP reinforced concrete members are insufficient. In this paper, seven full-scale decks with dimensions of $4000{\times}3000{\times}240mm$ were prepared and tested to failure in the laboratory. The test parameter was the bottom reinforcement ratio in transverse direction. The decks were subjected to various levels of concentrated cyclic load with a contact area of $577{\times}231mm$ to simulate the vehicle loading of DB-24 truck wheel loads acting on the center span of the deck. It was observed that the glass FRP (GFRP) reinforced deck on a restraint girder is strongly effected to the level of the applied load rather than the bottom reinforcement ratio. The study results showed that the maximum load less than 58% of the maximum static load can be applied to the deck to resist a fatigue load of 2 million cycles. The fatigue life of the GFRP decks from this study showed the lower and higher fatigue performance than that of ordinary steel and CFRP rebar reinforced concrete deck. respectively.
The wind design of buildings is typically based on strength provisions under ultimate loads. This is unlike the ductility-based approach used in seismic design, which allows inelastic actions to take place in the structure under extreme seismic events. This research investigates the application of a similar concept in wind engineering. In seismic design, the elastic forces resulting from an extreme event of high return period are reduced by a load reduction factor chosen by the designer and accordingly a certain ductility capacity needs to be achieved by the structure. Two reasons have triggered the investigation of this ductility-based concept under wind loads. Firstly, there is a trend in the design codes to increase the return period used in wind design approaching the large return period used in seismic design. Secondly, the structure always possesses a certain level of ductility that the wind design does not benefit from. Many technical issues arise when applying a ductility-based approach under wind loads. The use of reduced design loads will lead to the design of a more flexible structure with larger natural periods. While this might be beneficial for seismic response, it is not necessarily the case for the wind response, where increasing the flexibility is expected to increase the fluctuating response. This particular issue is examined by considering a case study of a sixty-five-story high-rise building previously tested at the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory at the University of Western Ontario using a pressure model. A three-dimensional finite element model is developed for the building. The wind pressures from the tested rigid model are applied to the finite element model and a time history dynamic analysis is conducted. The time history variation of the straining actions on various structure elements of the building are evaluated and decomposed into mean, background and fluctuating components. A reduction factor is applied to the fluctuating components and a modified time history response of the straining actions is calculated. The building components are redesigned under this set of reduced straining actions and its fundamental period is then evaluated. A new set of loads is calculated based on the modified period and is compared to the set of loads associated with the original structure. This is followed by non-linear static pushover analysis conducted individually on each shear wall module after redesigning these walls. The ductility demand of shear walls with reduced cross sections is assessed to justify the application of the load reduction factor "R".

FRP-concrete composite deck, an innovative system, is composed of concrete in the top and FRP panel in the bottom. Bottom FRP panel can reduce self weight and improve workability. This system requires strong connection between FRP and concrete. Therefore coarse sand coating was previously applied on FRP to improve the bonding. In this study, concrete wedge method is newly introduced to enhance both vertical bond and fatigue performance. Three FRP-concrete composite deck specimens with the concrete wedges were manufactured, and static and fatigue tests were carried out. The results showed that the new FRP-concrete composite deck satisfied deflection and crack width limits set by the design codes. And the fatigue test showed that the composite deck was capable of two million load cycles under 50% of its static strength. Based on the results, it can be concluded that that this new system has outstanding mechanical and durability performance, and therefore, satisfactorily be used in designing FRP-concrete composite deck.

In the present work, a mechanical performances under cyclic loading in RC (Reinforced Concrete) beams with normal steel and FRPH (Fiber Reinforced Plastic Hybrid) bar are investigated. For the work, RC beam members with $200{\times}200{\times}2175mm$ of geometry and 24 Mpa of design strength are prepared, and 4-point-bending tests are performed for evaluation of cracking, yielding, and ultimate loads. Through static loading test, 48.9kN and 36.0 kN of yielding loads are measured for normal RC and FRPH beam, respectively. They have almost same ultimate load of 50.0 kN. Typical tension hardening behavior is observed in FRPH beam, which is caused by the behavior of FRPH bar with tension hardening. In cyclic loading conditions, FRPH beam has more smaller crack width and scattered crack pattern, and it shows more elastic recovery than normal RC beam. The energy dissipation ratio in FRPH beam is 0.83, which is greater than 0.62 in normal RC beam and it shows more effective resistance to cyclic loadings.
Steel cables as the most important components are widely used in the certain types of structures such as cable-supported bridges, but the long-span structures may result in an increase in fatigue under high stress and corrosion of steel cables. The traditional steel cable is becoming a more evident hindrance. Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) cables with lightweight, high-strength are widely used in civil engineering, but there is little research in vibrational characteristics of FRP cables, especially on the damping characteristic. This article studied the two methods to evaluate dynamical damping characteristic of basalt FRP(BFRP) and glass FRP(GFRP) cables. First, the vibration tests of the B/G FRP cables with different diameter and different cable force were executed. Second, the cables forces were calculated using dynamic strain, static strain and dynamic acceleration respectively, which were further compared with the measured force. Third, experimental modal damping of each cables was calculated by the half power point method, and was compared with the calculation by Rayleigh damping theory and energy dissipation damping theory. The results indicate that (1) The experimental damping of FRP cables decreases with the increase of cable force, and the trend of experimental damping changes is roughly similar with the theoretical damping. (2) The distribution of modal damping calculated by Rayleigh damping theory is closer to the experimental results, and the damping performance of GFRP cables is better than BFRP cables.
This research was carried out to develop an integrated folding wing made from carbon composite materials. Design requirements were reviewed and composite wing sizing was conducted using design optimization with commercial software. Three composite manufacturing processes including hot-press, pultrusion, and autoclave were evaluated and the most suitable processes for the integrated wing fabrication were selected, with consideration given to performance and cost. The determined manufacturing process was verified by two design development tests for selecting the design concept. Stiffness and strength of the composite wing were estimated through structural analyses. The test loads were calculated and static tests about design limit load and design ultimate load were performed using both wings. As a result, the evaluation criterions of the tests were satisfied and structural safety was verified through the series of structural analyses and testing.

This paper is the results of experimental and numerical works on analyzing the geotechnical engineering behavior and characteristics of excavated clay slope formed by the method of excavated replacement which is one of treatments in soft soil ground. For the centrifuge model tests, models of excavated clay slope were prepared by remolding the marine clayey soil sampled from the field. Tests were performed with changing the slope to investigate the behavior of them. On the other hand, numerical analyses were carried out to analyze the change of safety factor against instability of slope with time. Changes of pore water pressure, shear strength and displacement were also investigated. As results of centrifuge model tests with slopes of 1:1.5 and 1:3 using the confining body of simulating the effect of excavation, for the case of 1:1.5, slope failure occurred right after remove the confining body whereas relatively small displacements within the range of 3.2mm, implying to maintain the stability of slope, were observed for the case of 1:3 slope. From the results of numerical analyses using the software of PLAXIS to investigate the stability of slope after excavation, the minimum safety factor against slope failure was 1.28 for the case of 1:3 slope. The further researches in the future are required with considerations of build up of static pore water pressures during acceleration of centrifuge, depth of excavation influencing the behavior of the slope and permeability of the slope since excavation of the slope was not simulated well resulted from the limitations of apparatus at the stage of excavation during the centrifuge tests.

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the static behavior of a horizontally curved prestressed concrete (PSC) girder. A 30m long full-scale curved PSC girder with 80.0m radius is fabricated by a portable curved form system. Deflections and concrete strains at the middle of span were measured. The obtained experimental results have been compared to those from F.E.A. analysis. When a initial crack developed, the applied load was 1.3 times the service design load and the vertical deflection at the middle of span satisfied the requirement for a live load state according to the Korea Bridge Design Specifications (2010). Also, the ductility of the full scale specimen satisfied the limit in the Specifications (2010). To verify the experimental results, a numerical F.E. analysis was carried and confirmed that the data were similar with results from the test above. The horizontally curved PSC girder fabricated on site was found to have enough strength for safety under and after construction.

This paper presents the pull-out failure mode on Headed Bars and prediction of tensile capacity, as governed by concrete cone failure. 17 different plate types, three different concrete strengths and three different welding types of specimens were simulated. Test variables are the reinforcing bar diameters connected to headed plate (e.g., 16mm, 19mm and 22mm), the head plate shapes (e.g., circular, square, rectangular), the dimensions of head plates (e.g., area and thickness), the types of welding scheme for connection of reinforcing bars and head plates (e.g., general welding and friction welding). Headed Bars were manufactured in different areas, which shape and thickness are based on ASTM 970-98. Calculation of Embedment length in concrete is based on CSA 23.3-94, and static tensile load was applied. Pullout capacities tested were compared to the values determined using current design methods such as ACI-349 and CCD method. If compare experiment results and existings, Headed bar expressed high strength and bigger breakdown radious than standard by wide plate area and anomaly reinforcing rod unlike anchor.
Limestone area have mostly certain geological defects such as the internal cavities due to melting and fractured zone by external pressures. Especially, in case of constructing grand bridge, the treatment of the limestone cavities area having the geological defects is inevitable. In order to reduce foundation settlement and to reinforce the ground in the limestone cavities area, high pressure jet grouting has been carried out as a countermeasure method. Despite the fact that high pressure jet grouting method has already adopted at a lot of limestone cavities area, but the amount of research and technical data on the high pressure jet grouting have not been accumulated properly so for. Therefore this paper intends to investigate the strength characteristics and deformation characteristics for reinforced limestone cavities area by high pressure jet grouting method. In addition, load carrying capacity obtained by static pile load test with load transfer measuring system is analyzed.
