  • In this study, a large-scale laboratory model test, 2-D and 3-D numerical analyses were conducted to verify the reinforcement effect by utilizing geotextile bag on the railway roadbed. Static loading which simulated train load was applied on the geotextile bag-reinforced railway roadbed and also unreinforced railway roadbed, Computer program named Pentagon which is a part of FEM programs was used in the numerical analysis. Based on the results of laboratory test, 2-D and 3-D numerical analyses, the effect of load distribution and settlement reduction was found to be depending on the geotextile characteristics, tensile strength of geotextite, and interface friction angle between geotextile bags. In general, the result of 2-D and 3-D numerical analyses shows lower value than that of laboratory test. Also, the result of 3-D numerical analyses shows lower value than that of 2-D numerical analyses because of its stress transfer effect.

  • In this paper, a higher order shear deformation beam theory is developed for static and free vibration analysis of functionally graded beams. The theory account for higher-order variation of transverse shear strain through the depth of the beam and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the beam without using shear correction factors. The material properties of the functionally graded beam are assumed to vary according to power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. Based on the present higher-order shear deformation beam theory, the equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle. Navier type solution method was used to obtain frequencies. Different higher order shear deformation theories and classical beam theories were used in the analysis. A static and free vibration frequency is given for different material properties. The accuracy of the present solutions is verified by comparing the obtained results with the existing solutions.

  • Quasi-static three-point bending tests on sandwich beams with expanded metal sheets as core were conducted. Relationships between the force and displacement at the mid-span of the sandwich beams were obtained from the experiments. Numerical simulations were carried out using ABAQUS/EXPLCIT and the results were thoroughly compared with the experimental results. A parametric analysis was performed using a Box-Behnken design (BBD) for the design of experiments (DOE) techniques and a finite element modeling. Then, the influence of the core layers number, size of the cell and, thickness of the substrates was investigated. The results showed that the increase in the size of the expanded metal cell in a reasonable range was required to improve the performance of the structure under bending collapse. It was found that core layers number and size of the cell was key factors governing the quasi-static response of the sandwich beams with lattice cores.

  • The fluid-structure interaction analysis such as a static aeroelastic analysis requires the result of each analysis as an input to other analysis. Usually the grids for the fluid analysis and the structural analysis are different, so the results should be transformed properly for each other. The Infinite Plate Spline(IPS) and the Thin Plate Spline(TPS) are used in interpolating the displacement and the pressure. In this study, such interpolation methods are compared with kriging which provides a precise response surface. The static aeroelastic analysis is performed for the supersonic flow field with shock waves and the pressure field is interpolated by the TPS and kriging. The TPS shows tendency to weaken the shock stength, whereas kriging preserves the shock strength.

  • An experimental study of the application of Silica fume for the high strength concrete was conducted. Nine specimens with three different contents of silica fume, 0%, 10%, 20% and with three water-cement ratio 30%, 40%, 50% were tested. Results shows that 10% of silica fume and 30% of water-cement ratio has a maximum strength with 700kg/$cm^2$ of compressive strength and 64kg/$cm^2$ of splitting tensile strength and 100kg/$cm^2$ of flexural strength. Slump value of the tested samples decreases with increasing water-cement ratio and elapsed time of silica fume. Splitting tensile strength$({\sigma}_f)$ and flexural strength $({\sigma}_f)$ and static modulus of elasticity(E) can be correlated with compressive strength $({\sigma}_c)$ from a regression analysis.

  • The stud is one of the most frequently used shear connectors which are important to the steel-concrete composite action. The static and fatigue behavior of stud in the steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) were particularly concerned in this study through the push-out tests and analysis. It was for the purpose of investigating and explaining a tendency proposed by the current existing researches that the SFRC may ameliorate the shear connector's mechanical performance, and thus contributing to the corresponding design practice. There were 20 test specimens in the tests and 8 models in the analysis. According to the test and analysis results, the SFRC had an obvious effect of restraining the concrete damage and improving the stud static performance when the compressive strength of the host concrete was relatively low. As to the fatigue aspect, the steel fibers in concrete also tended to improve the stud fatigue life, and the favorable tensile performance of SFRC may be the main reason. But such effect was found to vary with the fatigue load range. Moreover, the static and fatigue test results were compared with several design codes. Particularly, the fatigue life estimation of Eurocode 4 appeared to be less conservative than that of AASHTO, and to have higher safety redundancy than that of JSCE hybrid structure guideline.

  • In this study, the reliability analysis of internal and external stabilities of Reinforced Soil Walls (RSWs) under static and seismic loads are investigated so that it can help the geotechnical engineers to perform the design more realistically. The effect of various variables such as angle of internal soil friction, soil specific gravity, tensile strength of the reinforcements, base friction, surcharge load and finally horizontal earthquake acceleration are examined assuming the variables uncertainties. Also, the correlation coefficient impact between variables, sensitivity analysis, mean change, coefficient of variation and type of probability distribution function were evaluated. In this research, external stability (sliding, overturning and bearing capacity) and internal stability (tensile rupture and pull out) in both static and seismic conditions were investigated. Results of this study indicated sliding as the predominant failure mode in the external stability and reinforcing rupture in the internal stability. First-Order Reliability Method (FORM) are applied to estimate the reliability index (or failure probability) and results are validated using the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method. The results showed among all variables, the internal friction angle and horizontal earthquake acceleration have dominant impact on the both reinforced soil wall internal and external stabilities limit states. Also, the type of probability distribution function affects the reliability index significantly and coefficient of variation of internal friction angle has the greatest influence in the static and seismic limits states compared to the other variables.

  • Recentrly advantages in composite and light weight material techniques have led to the increased use of bonded dissimilar materials such as ceramics/metal bonded joints, IC package, brazing, coating and soldering in the various industries. It is required to analyze the evaluation method of fracture strength and design methodology of bonded joints in dissimilar materials. Stress singularity according to changes of scarf angles for bonded scarf joints in dissimilar materials was investigated by the boundary element method and static experiments. In this paper, effect of the stress singularity factors at the interface edges of scarf joints on various dissmilar materials combinations were investigated by analysis of its stress and stress singularity index using 2-dimensional elastic program of boundary element method. And the variations of stress singularity index by changes for Young's modulus ratios of materials and scarf angles were investigated. Also, it is found that stress singularities at bonded interface edges are disappeared for certain combination of scarf angle in a pair of bonded dissimilar materials. As the results, it is proposed that the strength evaluation by using stress singularity factors, $\Gamma$, considering stress singularity at the interface edges of bonded dissimilar materials, is very useful.

  • Recently developed automotive components are getting lighter providing a higher fuel efficiency and performance. Following the current trend, this study proposes a structural optimization method for the lower control arm installed at the front side of a Vehicle. Lightweight design of lower control arm can be achieved through design and material technology. In this research, the shape of lower control arm was determined by applying the optimization technology and aluminum was selected as a steel-substitute material. Strength performance is the most important design requirement in the structural design of a control arm. This study considers the static strength in the optimization process. For the optimum design, the durability analysis is performed to predict its fatigue life. In this study, the kriging interpolation method is adopted to obtain the minimum weight satisfying the strength constraint. Optimum designs are obtained by the in-house program, EXCEL-Kriging. Also, based on the optimum model obtained for the static strength, the optimization of Index of Fatigue Durability is carried out to get th optimum fatigue performance.

  • In the comparison result of residual strain calculated from the load-strain curve under the repeated loading cycles, it was found that the larger the laminates is, the larger the stiffness of GFRP pipes under fatigue load is. This phenomenon is true until the fatigue failure. According to the S-N curves drawn by the regression analysis on the fatigue test results, the fatigue strength for percentage of the static ultimate strength increases by increasing the laminates of GFRP pipes. The fatigue strength for 2, 000, 000 repeated loading cycles In GFRP pipes with the laminates varing 15, 25, 35 shows 75.2%, 79.5%, 84.2% on the static ultimate strength, respectively.
