Compatibility of Lithium ion Phosphate Battery in Solar off Grid Application

  • Solar energy harvesting is practiced by various nations for the purpose of energy security and environment preservation in order to reduce overdependence on oil. Converting solar energy into electrical energy through Photovoltaic (PV) module can take place either in on-grid or off-grid applications. In recent time Lithium battery is exhibiting its presence in on-grid applications but its role in off-grid application is rarely discussed in the literature. The preliminary capacity and Peukert's study indicated that the battery quality is good and can be subjected for life cycle test. The capacity of the battery was 10.82 Ah at 1 A discharge current and the slope of 1.0117 in the Peukert's study indicated the reaction is very fast and independent on rate of discharge. In this study Lithium Iron Phosphate battery (LFP) after initial characterization was subjected to life cycle test which is specific to solar off-grid application as defined in IEC standard. The battery has delivered just 6 endurance units at room temperature before its capacity reached 75% of rated value. The low life of LFP battery in off-grid application is discussed based on State of Charge (SOC) operating window. The battery was operated both in high and low SOC's in off-grid application and both are detrimental to life of lithium battery. High SOC operation resulted in cell-to-cell variation and low SOC operation resulted in lithium plating on negative electrode. It is suggested that to make it more suitable for off-grid applications the battery by default has to be overdesigned by nearly 40% of its rated capacity.

  • Batteries are critical components of electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The connection of a battery to the power grid for charge and discharge greatly affects energy storage. Therefore, an accurate and easy-to-observe battery model should be established to achieve systematic design, simulation, and SOC (state of charge) estimations. In this review, several equivalent circuit models of representative significance are explained, and their respective advantages and disadvantages are compared to determine and outline their reasonable applications to Li-ion batteries. Numerous commonly used model parameter identification principles are summarized as well, and basic model verification methods are briefly introduced for the convenient use of such models.

  • This paper proposes a battery model applicable to Autonomie environment. Also, a various of experiment is implemented for validation. The proposed battery model modifies Randles equivalent circuit and battery parameters are extracted from pulsed current tests. The parameters are two-dimensional function of current and SOC(State of Charge). The battery model is developed in the Matlab/Simulink and is implemented for NiMH Panasonic HHR650D and compared with pulsed current discharge curves. The simulation results validate the accuracy of the proposed model and the model is also tested by adding it on Autonomie for HEV application. Constant current charge/discharge, pulsed current test that can be used to extract battery parameter are performed and test results are used to build up the proposed battery model for Autonomie.

  • 본 논문은 EV(Electric Vehicle)에 사용되는 배터리의 충/방전 전류에 따른 SOC(State of Charge) 및 전압특성을 Matlab Simulink로 구현하였으며, 검증을 위해 양방향 DC-DC 컨버터를 설계하여 실험을 하였다. 배터리 모델에 사용된 파라미터는 Randles등가회로를 기반으로 펄스방전을 통해 추출하였고, 단자전압 계산부에 3D Look-up 테이블을 이용해 적용하였다. SOC계산부는 전류에 따른 용량변화를 보상하기 위해 Peukert Effect를 적용하였으며, FTP-75 전류패턴으로 온도($0^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $40^{\circ}C$)에 따라 실험한 결과 시뮬레이션의 오차율은 5%로 높은 정확도를 갖는 것을 확인을 통해 검증 하였다.

  • As research on secondary batteries becomes important, interest in analytical methods to examine the condition of secondary batteries is also increasing. Among these methods, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method is one of the most attractive diagnostic techniques due to its convenience, quickness, accuracy, and low cost. However, since the obtained spectra are complicated signals representing several impedance elements, it is necessary to understand the whole electrochemical environment for a meaningful analysis. Based on the understanding of the whole system, the circuit elements constituting the cell can be obtained through construction of a physically sound circuit model. Therefore, this mini-review will explain how to construct a physically sound circuit model according to the characteristics of the battery cell system and then introduce the relationship between the obtained resistances of the bulk (Rb), charge transfer reaction (Rct), interface layer (RSEI), diffusion process (W) and battery characteristics, such as the state of charge (SOC), temperature, and state of health (SOH).

  • In this paper, an energy regeneration algorithm is proposed to make the maximum use of the regenerative braking energy for a parallel hybrid electric vehicle(HEV) equipped with a continuous variable transmission(CVT). The regenerative algorithm is developed by considering the battery state of charge(SOC), vehicle velocity and motor capacity. The hydraulic module consists of a reducing valve and a power unit to supply the front wheel brake pressure according to the control algorithm. In order to evaluate the performance of the regenerative braking algorithm and the hydraulic module, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) is performed. In the HILS system, the brake system consists of four wheel brakes and the hydraulic module. Dynamic characteristics of the HEV are simulated using an HEV simulator. In the HEV simulator, each element of the HEV powertrain such as internal combustion engine, motor, battery and CVT is modelled using MATLAB/$Simulink^{(R)}$. In the HILS, a driver operates the brake pedal with his or her foot while the vehicle speed is displayed on the monitor in real time. It is found from the HILS that the regenerative braking algorithm and the hydraulic module suggested in this paper provide a satisfactory braking performance in tracking the driving schedule and maintaining the battery state of charge.

  • Urban dynamometer driving schedule(FTP-75 mode) plays very significant role on automotive emission test, due to reference point. The overall system energy efficiency of a HEV(Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is highly dependent on the energy management strategy employed. An energy source is the heart of a HEV. In order to applicable to a vehicle component, it must be need to real world test result. But, the present state of things have numerous problems. In this paper, be studied performed based on HEV simulation software in virtual world and chassis dynamometer test in real world and the result make a comparative. Toyota Prius vehicle was adapted as a modeling and real testing to evaluate the hybrid components and energy balancing management. The point at issue is voltage and current analysis for HEV battery SOC(State of Charge), and verification for energy.

스핀-궤도 상호작용을 고려한 Si 불순물이 BCC Fe의 자성에 미치는 영향에 대한 제일원리연구 (A First-principles Study on the Effects on Magnetism of Si Impurity in BCC Fe by Considering Spin-orbit Coupling)

  • Si이 체심입방구조(body centered cubic; bcc) Fe에 불순물로 포함된 경우에 Fe의 전자구조와 자성에 미치는 영향을 스핀-궤도 상호작용(spin-orbit coupling, SOC)을 고려한 제일원리방법을 통하여 연구하였다. Si 불순물의 효과를 기술하기 위하여 27개의 원자가 포함된 bcc Fe 초격자 구조를 고려하였다. 제일원리방법은 전전자 총퍼텐셜선형보강평면파(all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plane wave, FLAPW) 방법을 일반기울기 근사(generalized gradient approximation, GGA) 하에서 계산하였다. 스핀-궤도 상호작용은 스핀대각항 만을 고려한 이차변분방법을 이용하여 자체충족적으로 계산하였다. SOC를 고려하지 않은 강자성(ferromagnetic, FM) 상태의 경우 Si 불순물의 경우에는 $-0.143{\mu}B$의 스핀 자기모멘트가 계산되었으며, Fe 원자가 Si 불순물에서 멀어지면서 각각 $2.214{\mu}B$, $2.327{\mu}B$, 및 $2.354{\mu}B$의 값을 얻었다. 그러나, SOC를 고려한 경우 Si 불순물의 스핀 자기모멘트는 $-0.144{\mu}B$로 계산되어 SOC의 효과가 크지 않았으나, Fe 원자의 경우 각각 $2.189{\mu}B$, $2.310{\mu}B$, 및 $2.325{\mu}B$로 계산되어 SOC를 고려한 경우 스핀 자기모멘트 값이 줄어드는 것을 알 수 있었다. 총전하 및 스핀밀도의 비교와 상태밀도의 비교를 통하여 이러한 현상은 Si 불순물에 의한 영향을 가리는데 참여하는 Fe 원자의 $t_{2g}$ 전자 궤도의 변형의 효과로서 SOC를 고려할 때만 얻을 수 있다.

  • 본 논문은 LiPB의 SOH (State of Health)를 판별하는 방법중 배터리용량 (Ah) 및 저항 등가모델의 장 단점을 비교한다. 그리고 정확한 SOH 추정을 위해 DCIR (Direct Current Internal Resistance)을 사용한 판별 방법을 제안한다. 정확한 DCIR 값을 추정하기 위하여 EKF (Extended Kalman Filter)를 적용하고, MATLAB 시뮬레이션을 통해 DCIR 값을 확인한다. 또한, 실제 LiPB의 각 SOC (State of Charge) 상태마다 DCIR 값을 측정하고, 추정 값과 비교를 통해 정확도를 판단한다.

  • This paper introduces a lithium ion battery management system (BMS) for the STSAT-3 satellite. The specifications of a lithium ion battery unit are proposed to supply power to the satellite and the overall electrical and mechanical designs for a lithium ion battery management system are presented. The structural simulation results will be shown to confirm the behavior of both the BMS and the cells.
