Effects of Processing and Genetics on the Nutritional Value of Sorghum in Chicks and Pigs - Review -

  • Differences in the physical structure and chemical composition of sorghums result in different nutritional values. Sorghums with high in vitro nutrient digestibility tend to have greater ileal and total tract nutrient digestibilies. Soft endosperm can improve growth and nutrient digestibility in nursery pigs and broiler chicks. However, finishing pigs respond less to endosperm hardness. Chicks benefit from waxy sorghums, but responses of swine to waxy sorghum remain controversial. Reduction of particle size benefits nursery pigs more than finishing pigs, while age of chicks affects the coarseness preference. Nutritional benefits of thermal processing in sorghum remain unclear in chicks and pigs. Although experiments have demonstrated increased efficiency with processed sorghum, processing provided only an immediate solution to the problem of reduced utilization. Long-term, solutions will be genetic improvement of physical and on chemical characteristic.

Adolescent Perceptions of Social Media in a Pacific Rim Community

  • This study explored social media use among 50 adolescents attending a public high school in a non-Western community. Adolescents participated in focus group interviews and completed a written self-report survey. Findings revealed that these teenagers use electronic communication forms such as phone texting and social networking sites to connect with friends and family. They show a preference for Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, do not engage in risky Internet behavior, and acknowledge both positive and negative aspects of electronic communication forms. In addition, their selection of electronic communication forms is dependent upon several factors that include the strength of the relationship and type of discourse exchange. For example, they reserve phone texting and cell use, which are more private communication mediums for family and friends. Electronic communication did not replace face-to-face interactions; rather it complemented and extended those interactions. Findings support existing literature on adolescent social media use and those shared with other collectivist cultural groups.

Alternating Development Strategies in Jeiu Island, Korea (제주도 발전 전략의 교호적 변화)

  • Islands are vulnerable to outer influences due to their small size and isolation. Tourism often becomes an important development focus because of their unique culture and nature. Jeju-do, as well as other islands, has experienced such development mostly led by central government, and the regional change was understood as the outcome of global influences without much concern with the local response or strategy. Thus, vulnerability has been the key theme in island development studies. This paper examines the current state of island development as an outcome of locals' alternating strategy in which the islanders accept the central government's plan, but express their demands to modify them. It is reflected in the electoral preference for ruling or oppositional parties, local movements against central government's development plans, and the spatial organization of tourism sites from a few growth centers to more dispersed, balanced development. These suggest that the current state of island development is not derived from unidirectional global forces, even if islands are peripheral. Rather, it is the outcome of an alternating strategy of Jeju locals accepting the central government development plans while managing them for local benefits.

Survey on Present Use and Future Demand for the Convenience Food in the Elderly Group (노인세대의 편의식 이용현황과 요구도 조사)

  • This study is to research the use and the demand of the elderly generation that pursue economic ability and active lifestyle. The composition of the meals were "homemade meals" 65.3%, "homemade & convenience meals" 26.7% overall. For the "never miss a meal" category, 70-74 years old was 48.3%, over 80 years old was 60.0%. The elderly under 70 years old showed a high frequency in the use of alternative meals (p < 0.05) and the elderly with higher education used the alternative meals more frequently (p < 0.01). The rice-cakes, bread, tuna cans, Korean side-dishes, beverages, meat, cup-noodles and seafood as alternative meals are in the order of most frequency. Also, 96.0%, 59.0% and 46.5% of the elderly had experience in using "Ready to eat (RTE)", "Ready to heat (RTH)" and "Ready to cook (RTC)". The oldest group surveyed, the elderly at the age of 80 years old and above showed lower preference for "completely cooked state" but showed highest results in the "half-cooked state". This shows the difference between people's perception and the behavior that showed high frequency of 96.0% in the experience with "RTE". This can be inferred that the elderly needs the development of convenience food that is moderately packaged according to the newer lifestyle where the elderly live independent from their children. Moreover, there is a higher demand in the healthy convenience food, which means that there is a need for development in the quality of the convenience food that will allow more faith in convenience food by the elderly.

  • Promoted by cloud technology and new websites, plenty and variety of Web services are emerging in the Internet. Meanwhile some Web services become outdated even obsolete due to new versions, and a normal phenomenon is that some services work well only with other services of older versions. These laggard or improper services are lowering the performance of the composite service they involved in. In addition, using current technology to identify proper semantic services for a composite service is time-consuming and inaccurate. Thus, we proposed a clustering method and a recommendation method to deal with these problems. Clustering technology is used to classify semantic services according to their topics, functionality and other aspects from plenty of services. Recommendation technology is used to predict the possible preference of a composite service, and recommend possible component services to the composite service according to the history information of invocations and similar composite services. The experiments show that our clustering method with the help of Ontology and TF/IDF technology is more accurate than others, and our recommendation method has less average error than others in the series of missing rate.

  • Validity of use of a Y-maze for determining a foraging strategy of cattle was investigated with the object of establishing a procedure of testing foraging strategies of large herbivores. Cattle were placed in a start box of a Y-maze, forced into either goal arm and allowed to consume half of the feed at the end of the arm. Then, cattle were returned to the start box and allowed to choose either arm in the second half of a trial. This time animals were allowed to deplete the feed in the goal arm they chose. A return to the previous arm was recorded a "stay" Choice of the other arm was recorded as a "shift". Shift strategy was not observed. Rather, their behavior appeared either random or stay. However, it might have been caused by inappropriateness of the application of the apparatus and/or the procedure used in the study of foraging behavior of rats. Although the existence of lateral preference was suggested, further study with an elaborated procedure will be necessary to investigate foraging strategies of cattle.

Utilization State of Fast-foods Among Korean Youth in Big Cities (도시 청소년들의 패스트 푸드의 이용실태 및 의식구조)

  • This study was to investigate utilization state of various fast-foods among Korean youth in big cities in order to provide basic knowledge for nutrition education of Korean youth. Total 29 questions were asked to 1680 middle, high school and college students in Seoul. Pusan and Taejon. General information of the subjects were analyzed according to variables such as utilization state of fast foods(hamburger, pizza, chicken, noodles & mandoo, ice cream), preference, concenpts regarding price, fullness, choice factors and influences on food habits. All statistical data analysis were conducted using the SPSS/PC+. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) Fast-food eaten most frequently was noodles & mandoo where the least frequently eaten was pizza. 2) The area used fast-feeds the least frequently was in Pusan where hamburger was used by 51.1% of the subjects, pizza by 26.5% 64.1%, 38.9% of the subjects in Seoul and 64.7%, 31.3% in Taejon ate hamburger & pizza, respectively. 3) 38.5%, 34.2%, 32.8% and 17.5% of chicken, pizza, noodles & mondoo and hamburger eaters commented on saltiness. Also 82.2% of ice cream eaters suggested ice creams taste too sweet. 4) 94.2%, 72%, 69.5%, 38.5% and 23.8% of pizza, chicken, hamburger, ice cream, noodles & mandoo eaters suggested the price of these fast-foods too expensive. 5) 39.6% of the subjects wished to developed Korean traditional food items into fast-food styles.

The Impact of Government Assistance to State-owned Enterprises on Foreign Start-ups: Evidence from Yangtze River Delta

  • Different types of corporate ownership may affect the environment among firms and could influence the decisions of new entities in the region. This study determines the role of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in hindering new foreign manufacturing firms in the Yangtze River delta (YRD). The negative binomial regression is used for city-sector level data and the following points summarize the results: Firstly, the unique privileges that SOEs enjoy alongside governmental support create difficulties for foreign firms trying to establish themselves near existing SOEs. Secondly, although core cities are more attractive to foreign firms than peripheral cities, the role of core-periphery reveals that, in spite of all the regional advantages core cities could offer, whenever the share of SOEs is higher, the core-periphery system will have an adverse impact on new foreign firms. In other words, government preference for SOEs can suppress the attraction of foreign start-ups. However, after 2008, the governmental authorities finally succeeded in implementing their promising policy of fair treatment and competition in only the core cities.

Sushi Consumption Behavior of Koreans according to Food-related Lifestyle Type among Consumers (외식 소비자의 식생활 라이프스타일에 따른 초밥 소비행동 분석)

  • The aim of this study was to classify Korean consumers based on their food-related lifestyle type, and to investigate the relationship between sushi consumption and food-related lifestyle type. Self-reported questionnaires were completed by 300 Korean adults. The SPSS 18.0 program was used to analyze the samples. Data was analyzed by frequency, descriptive factor, reliability, cluster analysis, ANOVA, and chi-square test. A factor analysis extracted four factors comprising foodrelated lifestyle, which we named Health-seeking (factor 1), Taste-seeking (factor 2), Convenience-seeking (factor 3), and Economy-seeking (factor 4). According to a cluster analysis based on those four factors, consumers were classified into three clusters. Cluster 1 was the Taste and Health-seeking cluster, Cluster 2 was the Convenience-seeking cluster, and Cluster 3 was the Passive Eating Habits cluster. The results also indicated that the selection attributes of each cluster were significantly different in terms of perception, the global state of sushi, sushi preference, frequency, companions, place of sushi consumption, and preference for different sushi sub-ingredients. Based on these results, consumer characteristics in the sushi market are discussed.

An Intelligent Learning Environment for Heritage Alive (유적탐사 지능형 학습 환경)

  • The knowledge-based society of the 21st century requires effective education and learning methods in each professional field because the development of human resource determines its competence more than any other factors. It is highly desirable to develop an intelligent tutoring system, which meets ever increasing demands of education and learning. Such a system should be adaptive to each individual learner's demands as well as the continuously changing state of the learning process, thus enabling the effective education. The development of a learning environment based on learner modeling is necessary in order to be adaptive to individual learning variants. An intelligent learning environment is being developed targeting the heritage education, which is able to provide a customized and refined learning guide by storing the content of interactions between the system and the learner, analyzing the correlations in learning situations, and inferring the learning preference from the learner's learning history. This paper proposes a heritage learning system of Bulguksa temple, integrating the ontology-based learner modeling and the learning preference which considers perception styles, input and processing methods, and understanding process of information.
