  • Business environment is always full of challenges. Despite various strategic efforts, there are so many failure cases of misfit. With the weaker resource base and institutional foundation, startup firms find it more difficult to find the right spot in the stiff competition. In the middle of evolutionary process, the startup firms need proper strategies meeting the differential challenges along the multiple stages of growth. Following the idea of product life cycle, this study applies the four stages of growth-startup, initial growth, accelerated growth, matured, and decliing. The next step for the startup manager is meeting each stage of growth with proper strategic efforts, including strategy, structure, decision-making pattern, and control method. When the knowledge factor is introduced, there is a potential for higher performance. Based on the 'Detailed Survey on Startup Ventures in 2017,' this study explores the impact of the government subsidy program on the firm competitiveness and performance-along the four stages of growth. In each stage, the strategy factors showed differential impact.

  • In spite of magnificent growth of The startup education in terms of volumes and varieties, Theoric bases and logics of startup education design are not sufficient and vulnerable. The major reasons of these situations are caused not only by the facts that the startup education has been prepared by the governmental needs but also by the objective in short term period. Considering the fact that the startup educations are also one of classical education itself, it should be adopted the proper education paradigm on its program design. Especially it should be considered of basic education component in startup education design such as education supplier (educator, teacher), education demander (student, educator himself) and education program. In this research, we has reviewed andn proposed efficient design directions and practical strategies for the efficient startup education programs.

  • The Industrial Revolution 4.0 has significantly improved labor productivity, upholding the role of people as the creator of core values and the focus of sustainable development. Vietnam is facing an important turning point when GDP growth has gradually slowed down in the context that natural resources are beginning to dry up. Study on the Perception Gap between Technology Based Entrepreneurs and Startup Facilitators about Success Factors for Startup (기술 창업자와 창업 조력자 간 창업 성공요인의 인식차이에 관한 연구)

  • All countries of the world are promoting the creative economy policy to overcome the global economic crisis. Korean government enforces the creative economy policy for the economic growth and job creation. Especially, Technology based startup is actively supported to realize the creative economy. To maximize the efficiency of supporting start-ups, we have to analyze a perception gap of the startup success factors between technology based entrepreneur and startup facilitator. Through the analysis, the supporting policy of startup utilized efficiently the limited resources is necessary. So, the purpose of this study is analysis the difference of the startup success factors which technology based entrepreneur and startup facilitator recognize. To analysis, the start-up success factors derived from previous studies were categorized them as 1) characteristics of the founder, 2) start-up strategy, 3) characteristics of the organization, and 4) start-up environment. Also, The CEO of technology based start-ups and the researcher in national research institute to support SMEs were surveyed. Then, Survey was analyzed by utilizing the ANP methodology to priority derivation of start-up success factors. Result of analysis, Technology Based Entrepreneur was determined that 'composition and expertise of organization' is most important factor for success of startup. On the other hand, Startup facilitator was determined that 'financing strategy of organization' is most important factor for success of startup. Both groups are recognized as important strategy. And start-up environment is recognized as a relatively unimportant. On the other hand, the importance which two groups evaluate about characteristics of entrepreneur and characteristics of organization was different. This study has a academic significance to analyze the priority of the startup success factors between technology based entrepreneur and startup facilitator. Also, It can be utilized practical guideline when policy making about technology based startup.

Impact of Open-innovation on Startup Growth : Focusing on Sales Collaboration Performance (오픈이노베이션이 스타트업 성장에 미치는 영향 : 매출 협업 성과를 중심으로 )

  • This study is related to the performance of open innovation collaboration between startups and large corporations and financial institutions. In the life cycle of a typical company, the growth of a startup is difficult to predict. Startups that possess innovative technology but have only recently been established seek to verify their technology and capabilities by participating in open innovation with large corporations and financial institutions, and further strive to lay the foundation for corporate growth. However, if you approach it only as a theoretical coexistence plan, it will be viewed as a vague attempt from the startup's perspective. The purpose of this study is to differentiately verify the benefits of open innovation by analyzing the difference in sales growth of startups for the purpose of sales performance based on the open innovation participation of large companies and small and medium-sized companies(startups). In verifying this, the analysis was based on the sales results of the actual open innovation collaboration B2C model, and the difference was confirmed by comparing before and after collaboration. Here, the differentiation of the study was added by reflecting the corporate growth stage theory, a growth theory. When the corporate growth stage theory was excluded, it was confirmed that sales growth due to open innovation of startups was applied from the third month, and sales growth depending on participation was confirmed to be significant. On the other hand, when the corporate growth stage theory was applied, sales growth was not significant, but the difference in growth could be confirmed from the fourth month, and it was also confirmed in sales growth depending on participation. As a result, this study objectively confirms the effects that can be gained when startups participate in Open-innovation, and it is expected that Open-innovation led by large corporations, financial institutions, and government agencies will develop into a high-quality program environment.

  • This research is focused on how the venture-startup policies of South Korea has changed for the last ten years and then scope on its outcomes, limits and suggestions. Several policies for venture-startup has begun when "Small Business Startup Support Law" was developed in 1986. Government's support policies for venture and startup and development of venture had made a turning point in 1997 "Act on Special Measures for the Promotion of Venture Business" and venture companies has achieved remarkable growth with Information Technologies(IT). However, with the global IT bubble and the enrichment of venture companies, a number of venture companies experienced considerable difficulties due to multiple thresholds. There were a lot of efforts to revitalize venture-startup ecosystem such as fostering innovative SMEs and one-person creative enterprise support policy. From 2002 to 2004, Korean Government focused on preventing moral hazards of Korean Venture Business. From 2005 to 2006, It focused on fostering the role of venture capitals, and From 2007 to 2012, Single start-up business has been fostered by government policies. Generally speaking, it can be said that venture-startup policy was emphasized on building the hardware infrastructure of venture-startup and supporting with the funds.

  • This paper is on the policy proposal for venture ecosystem. First, one of the three secrets of the US venture ecosystem is the law of 50:50. Angel capital investment is as important as venture capital investment. Although professional angel investors and accelerators account for as much as VC in the venture ecosystem, they are ignored from policy considerations. We argue that the revision of related law is urgent. Second, large US firms invest more in M&As than in internal R&D. Therefore, accelerators and professional angel investors could make effective investment recovery after investing in a startup company. In other words, angel capital does not come in without secondary market development. Angel capital and secondary markets are the two pillars of the venture ecosystem. The government alone is difficult to develop a secondary market. This is why the private sector should come in and introduce corporate venture capital (CVC). Third, we believe the policy direction for national economic growth should be extended from the startup to scale-up. This is because the startup's sales and job creation will start in five years. While the previous study focused on funding (venture financing), this paper aims to balance all three stages of a venture: startup, growth, and recovery, which are the life cycle of a venture company or venture investment. In particular, we propose specific policies in each chapter to improve practical application.

A Study on the Measurement of Startup and Venture Ecosystem Index (창업·벤처 생태계 측정에 관한 연구)

  • The importance of startups and ventures in the Korean economy is growing. This study measured whether the start-up and venture ecosystem is growing, including the growth of startups and ventures. The startup and venture ecosystem consists of startups and ventures, investors, and government, which are the main actors of the 'ecosystem', and their movements were measured with 25 quantitative indicators. Based on the original data of the time series from 2010 to 2020, the startup and venture ecosystem index was calculated by applying weights through the comprehensive stock index method and AHP. In 2020, the startup and venture ecosystem grew 2.9 times compared to 2010, and the increase in the government index had a significant impact on growth. Also, the individual indicators that make up each index in 2020, the corporate index had the greatest impact on the growth of the number of 100-billion ventures, while the investment index had a recovery amount and the government index had a significant impact. Based on the original data, the startup and venture ecosystem index was analyzed by dividing it into ecosystems (startup ecosystem and venture ecosystem), industry by industry (all industries and manufacturing industry), and region (Korea and Busan). As a result, the growth of the startup ecosystem over the past decade has been slightly larger than that of the venture ecosystem. The manufacturing was lower than that of all industries, and Busan was lower than that of the nation. This study was intended to use it for the establishment and implementation of support policies by developing, measuring, and monitoring the startup and venture ecosystem index. This index has the advantage of being able to research the interrelationships between major actors, and anyone can calculate the index using the results of official statistical surveys. In the future, it is necessary to continuously update this content to understand how economic and social events or policy support have affected the startup and venture ecosystem.

The Effect of Angel Investment on Corporate Financial Performance (엔젤투자가 기업의 재무적 성과에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper examines whether angel investors affect startup's financial performance (profitability and growth ratios) in the Korean startup market over 10 years period from 2009 to 2018. In particular, we consider not only the behavior of angel investor such as the investment amount or the type of investments (stocks, bonds) but also the type of angle investor (individual or corporation). Our empirical results are as follows. First, we find that the startup's profitability ratios are higher after the investment of angel investors. However, the growth ratios show different results in assets and sales. Second, we identify that the investment amount of angel investors negatively affects on the startup's growth ratios. Lastly, we find that equity investment such as common stock or preferred stock and the individual angel investors such as personal investment association or professional angels show higher financial performance than bond investment or corporate angel investors. Overall, our findings imply that angel investors positively affect startup's financial performance. In particular, we infer that the superior financial performance is largely attributed to monitor startups by participating as shareholders or to select more carefully by the individual angel investors who may be exposed to more investment risk. In conclusion, our findings support that angel investors play a positive role in the Korean venture investment market.

An Analysis of Growth Engine Industries using the ORBIS DB

  • Many countries set growth engine technologies and industries for economic growth and job creation. Each country always wants to know their technological or industrial position in the world in these industries. This study aims at identifying the worldwide position of 19 growth engine industries defined in Korean government. The methods are quantitative by counting the number of startup companies in the world. The ORBIS database was used to extract the number. Therefore, this article may be the first research for the world appearance of growth engine industries and its comparison between world and G7, and between G7 countries. Also, this may be the first study using the ORBIS database on the analysis of certain technology industries. Further, we showed a method to identify world features of technology industries.
