  • Two old synchronous condensers in Jeju are being replaced by new machines to operate Jeju AC network with Haenam-Jeju HVDC system stably. Before new synchronous condensers operate on site, voltage stability analysis is conducted to verify stable operation of jeju AC network. Through impedance analysis of the synchronous machine, transformer and ac network, the equivalent circuit is constructed and the voltage drop during start-up is calculated. Then, PSS/E fault analysis is performed to acquire short-circuit capacity according to the generator operation scenarios. Voltage variation when starting synchronous condenser is simulated in PSCAD/EMTDC and satisfies the operating condition of jeju AC network and HVDC #1 system.

  • Heat cycle aging of insulating materials in large generator stator winding has been investigated using both on-line and off-line test methods. On this study, principally, off-line test against actual generator in service was carried out to acquire information about polarization index(PI) and dissipation factor, dissipation factor tip-up, maximum partial discharge for the purpose of remnant breakdown voltage and life assessment. It was found from the tests that both dissipation factor and maximum partial discharge decreased with the increase of operating hours and starting numbers. It was found from off-line tests that the remnant breakdown voltage had a strong relationship with both dissipation factor and maximum partial discharge the remnant breakdown voltage as a results of both operating hours and starting number and the nondestructive tests were proposed as parameters which can predict the remnant lifetime of insulating materials in large generator stator windings. • We propose a control system consisted of TRIAC PWM module and sequential start control system attenuating voltage-dip and inrush current caused by starting of inductive load network. To minimize the high voltage-dip and inrush current induced from a large capacity inductive load, we developed a TRIAC PWM module. And we also developed a sequential start control system preventing simultaneous starting of the inductive loads within a same power network. According to the experimental results with the proposed control system, the voltage-dip and inrush current could be effectively attenuated such that they can meet the related international standards and resolve the issues associated with simultaneous starting of multiple inductive loads. By employing this system, power cost usually implemented by the estimation of peak power consumption can be reduced and the power quality of a power distribution system connected to the inductive load network can be stabilized efficiently.

  • This paper proposes a novel soft starting algorithm by using PWM inverter technique to control an amplitude of the motor starting current at a single-phase induction motor (SPIM). Traditional SPIM starting methods such as a Split-Phase, Capacitor-Start, Permanent-Split Capacitor (PSC), Capacitor-Start Capacitor-Run (CSCR), basically cannot control the magnitude of starting current due to the fixed system structures. Therefore, in this paper, a soft starting algorithm based on a proportional resonant (PR) control with a variable and constant frequency is proposed to reduce the inrush current and starting up time. In addition, a transition algorithm for operation modes is devised to generate a constant voltage and constant frequency (CVCF). The validity and effectiveness of the proposed soft starting method and transition algorithm are verified through experimental results.

  • When a fault occurs on railway feeders it is very important to detect the fault to protect trains and facilities. Because a DC railway system has low feeder voltage, The fault current can be smaller than the current of load starting. So it is important to discriminate between the small fault current and the load starting current. The load starting current increases step by step but the fault current increases at one time. So the type of $\Delta$I/ relay(50F) was developed using the different characteristics between the load starting current and the fault current. The load starting current increases step by step so the time constant of each step is much smaller than that of the fault current. First, to detect faults in DC railway systems, an algorithm using the time constant calculated by the method of least squares is presented in this paper. If a fault occurs on DC railway systems it is necessary to find a fault location to repair the faulted system as soon as possible. The second aim of the paper is to calculate the accurate fault location using Kirchhoff's voltage law.

  • To investigate degradation procedure and life time of the oxidized PE and the unoxidized PE, alternative voltage is applied to the CIGRE Method-II (CM-II) electrode system, which is loaded artificial void, and measures the distribution of partial discharging generation. From the results, the samples etched by oxidation had wide degradation area of dielectric strength. Furthermore, discharge starting voltage was shifted to low voltage, the discharge generation frequency was high and consequently, the quantity of mean charge becomes small. Also, life time of the oxdized sample is shortened according as the oxidation time is longer.

  • Refineries and chemical plants with isolated power systems that have a limited power supply are more susceptible to voltage changes from disturbances compared to power systems connected with a power company. Furthermore, most loads in such cases are induction motor loads, and therefore, transient voltage characteristics when starting a high-capacity motor must be examined. In general, high-capacity motors are customized appropriately to the load performance curve by the manufacturer during the construction of an industrial plant. Subsequently, when complying with the voltage drop permitted by international standards during the design process, power supply equipment such as transformers and generators is overdesigned. Therefore, a novel analysis is necessary on standards for startup and constraint voltage drops, as well as on identifying the voltage drop limitations for starting high-capacity motors in refineries and chemical plants with isolated power systems. In this study, field tests on an industrial plant were conducted, and simulations modeled under conditions identical to those of the field test system were performed using the general-purpose program ETAP in order to compare the results.

  • The most common for starting a single phase induction motor is to install a starting condenser and a centrifugal switch in series with the auxiliary winding. Though this method is simple, life of single phase induction motor is short because of malfunction of a starting condenser and a centrifugal switch and efficiency improvement has limitation. In this paper, the starting characteristics of SPIM is improved by sequence voltage control strategy of auxiliary winding in removing a starting condenser and a centrifugal switch. Finally, the excellent starting performance of SPIM is shown through simulation and experimental results.

  • A DC railway system has low feeder voltage, The remote fault current can be smaller than the current of load starting. So it is important to discriminate between the small fault current and the train starting current. The train starting current increases step by step but the fault current increases all at once. So the type of $\bigtriangleup I\;relay(50F)$ was developed using the different characteristics between the load starting current and the fault current. As for the train starting current, the time constant of train current at each step is much smaller than that of the fault current. To detect faults in U railway systems, an algorithm that is independent of train starting current. This algorithm use the time constant calculated by the method of least squares is presented in this paper.
