A k-out-of-n System Reliability Optimization Problem with Mixed Redundancy (혼합 중복 k-out-of-n 시스템 신뢰도 최적화 문제)

  • The k-out-of-n system with mixed redundancy is defined as k-out-of-n system which both includes warm-standby and cold-standby components. In case that operating components in the system fail and the system needs quick transition of standby components to operation state, the k-out-of-n system with mixed redundancy is useful for decreasing system failure rate and operational cost. Reliability-Redundancy Optimization Problem (RROP) involves selection of components with multiple choices and redundancy levels for maximizing system reliability with constraints such as cost, weight, etc. A solution methodology by using harmony search algorithm for RROP of the k-out-of-n system with mixed redundancy to maximize system reliability was suggested in this study.

  • There are various notions of partial ordering between life-times of systems; stochastic ordering failure rate ordering and likeli-hood ration ordering. In this paper we show that for series systems with non i.i.d. exponential lifetimes of components standby redundancy at component level is better than that at system level in failure rate or-dering and likelihood ratio ordering. We also demonstrate that for 2-component parallel systems with i.i.d. exponential lifetimes of com-ponents standby system redundancy is better than standby component redundancy in failure rate ordering and likelihood ratio ordering.

  • In this paper we proposed the alternative analysis of reliability design using redundancy technique. First, we presented the process for establishing the reliability design alternative analysis process considering the active redundancy and the standby redundancy. and then, the case analysis of A driving equipment was performed in accordance with the reliability design alternative analysis process presented. In case the series reliability design result is not met with the reliability target value. so, the target item for redundancy design of A driving equipment were selected as items with a severity of two or higher. The redundancy design applied with active and standby redundancy techniques were analyzed using BlockSim software. As a result, it was analyzed that reliability design to active redundancy with one of two elements required for A driving equipment is the most efficient compared to the target value of reliability. The results of this study can be usefully used before the reliability design is performed.

Redundant Architectural Design of Hydraulic Control System for Reliability Improvement of Underwater Construction Robot (수중건설로봇의 유압 제어 안정성 향상을 위한 이중화 설계)

  • In the development of an underwater construction robot, the reliability of the operating system is the most important issue because of its huge maintenance cost, especially in a deep sea application. In this paper, we propose a new redundant architectural design for the hydraulic control system of an underwater construction robot. The proposed architecture consists of dual independent modular redundancy management systems linked with a commercial profibus network. A cold standby redundancy management system consisting of a preprocessing switch circuit is applied to the signal network, and a hot standby redundancy management system is adapted to utilize two main controllers.

  • The reliability is defined as a probability that a system will operate properly for a specified period of time under the design operating conditions without failure and it has been considered as one of the major design parameters in the field of industries. Reliability-Redundancy Optimization Problem(RROP) involves selec tion of components with multiple choices and redundancy levels for maximizing system reliability with constraints such as cost, weight, etc. However, in practice both active and cold standby redundancies may be used within a particular system design. Therefore, a redundancy strategy(active, cold standby) for each subsystem in order to maximize system reliability is considered in this study. Due to the nature of RROP, i.e. NP-hard problem, A Parallel Particle Swarm Optimization(PPSO) algorithm is proposed to solve the mathematical programming model and it gives consistently better quality solutions than existing studies for benchmark problems.

  • Fault-tolerant system in improved the reliability and safety by using hardware and software redundancy. Fault mask and detection, identification techniques are conditionally used with system's application areas. Here DMR system is operated with standby and fail-safe module method that has minimal hardware and software redundancy, then its reliablity and safety comparison is presented respectively. Also this paper proposed an effective methods of dealing with transient faults as compared system's MTTFs to transient faults tolerance capabilities of self-diagnosis program.

  • In this paper, we suggest those two design plans for power supply method of Hot Standby Sparing System; one is the plan using MTBF based on Constant Failure Rate, and the plan using Reliability Function is the other. Traditionally, RBD (Reliability Block Diagram) is used for reliability prediction which is required to meet any requirements before system operation. However, the system that has redundancy, such as Hot Standby Sparing System, Is not suitable for system reliability modeling using combination model, such as RBD. In this paper, therefore, we demonstrate that for redundancy controller, redundancy modeling design toward fault occurrence design is more effective to build up a system with higher reliability and achieve the effectiveness of loss cost due to maintenance and failure occurred in operation, rather than combinational modeling design.

  • Reliability is defined as a probability that a system will operate properly for a specified period of time under the design operating conditions without failure. Reliability-Redundancy Optimization Problem(RROP) involves selection of components with multiple choices, redundancy levels and redundancy strategy(Active or Standby) for maximizing system reliability with constraints such as cost, weight, etc. Based on the design configuration of Multi-Spectral Camera(MSC) system of KOMPSAT-2, the mathematical programming model for RROP is suggested in this study. Due to the nature of RROP, i.e. NP-hard problem, Parallel Particle Swarm Optimization(PPSO) algorithm is proposed to solve it. The result of the numerical experiment for RROP is presented as instance of recommended design configuration at some mission time.

  • The increasing level of operation in high-tech industry is likely to require ever more complex structure in reliability problem. Furthermore, system failures are more significant on society as a whole than ever before. Reliability redundancy optimization problem (RROP) plays a important role in the designing and analyzing the complex system. RROP involves selection of components with multiple choices and redundancy levels for maximizing system reliability with constraints such as cost, weight, etc. Meanwhile, previous works on RROP dealt with system with perfect failure detection, which gave at most a good solution. However, we studied RROP with imperfect failure detection and switching. Using absorbing Markov Chain, we present not a good solution but the optimal one. In this study, the optimal system configuration is designed with warm and cold-standby redundancy for k-out-of-n system in terms of MTTF that is one of the performance measures of reliability.

  • Hot Standby sparing system detecting faults by using software, and being tolerant any faults by using Hardware Redundancy is difficult to perform quantitative reliability prediction and to detect real time faults. Therefore, this paper designs Hot Standby sparing system using hardware basis self checking logic in order to overcome this problem. It also performs failure mode analysis of Hot Standby sparing system with designed self checking logic by using FMEA (Failure Mode Effect Analysis), and identifies reliability assessment of the controller designed by quantifying the numbers of failure development by using FTA (Fault Tree Analysis)
