Survey on Labeling of Health Functional Foods in Internet Shopping Malls

  • Purpose - This research is to review the state of standard labeling compliance and identify the factors that are conducive to compliance with the Labeling Standards of the Health Functional Foods Act in internet distribution. Research design, data, and methodology - We checked 9 labels including product name, expiration date, manufacturing date, raw material, ingredient, operative dose, nutritional information, daily intake, and functional effect which are based on Labeling Standards of the Act from 100 health functional foods in the internet shopping malls. These 9 structure & function claims were compared using a Chi-square test. Results - There was a statistically significant difference in the use of standard labeling between domestic product and imported products (p<.001). The related strength between these two variables showed a moderate effect size. Also, there was a statistically significant difference between accredited advertising/unaccredited advertising distinction and use of standard labeling (p<.001). The related strength between these two variables showed a moderate effect size. Conclusions - The Labeling Standards of the Act were not followed and found to be related to imports or unauthorized advertising in internet distribution. The information displayed according to the Labeling Standards was only about 2 on the average, so many labels have been posted unreadably without arrangement.

A Study on Improvement of the Country-of-Origin Labeling Based on Consumer's Perception (소비자 인식을 바탕으로 한 원산지표시 개선 방안에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to improve some problems of the country-of-origin labeling based on the perception of consumers. For this, we surveyed 636 people. The questions of the survey are largely divided into three categories; 1) criteria and subject for imposition of fine, 2) the possibility of getting consumers confused with the products using domestic regional names as domestic products, 3) criteria for the country-of-origin transplantation of agricultural products and forestry products. According to the results, more than 30.0% of consumers preferred that it is adequate for imposing fine as much as its total sales, regardless of the type of business. In addition, in the case of products using domestic regional names, consumers can be confused about the products with domestic ones, even though there is a standard for confusing country-of-origin labeling. Standard for changing the country-of-origin of agricultural, forestry products and livestock, fisheries products are not balanced. The results of this study can be used as basis data for revising the country-of-origin labeling.

Use and Awareness of Nutrition Labeling of Snacks based on One Serving Size among University Students in Chungbuk (충북지역 일부 대학생의 영양표시 활용 실태 및 과자류 1회 제공량 기준 영양표시 인지도)

  • The study was carried out to investigate the efficacy of current nutrition labeling of processed foods and examine awareness among university students of nutrition information given current nutrition labels, and also awareness of the one-serving size of snacks that come in differently sized packages. A total of 100 students in Chungbuk, Korea participated in this study. About 60% of the subjects knew about nutrition labeling; however, a very small percentage (11%) of the subjects reported an experience of being educated about nutrition labeling. Also, just 32% of the students checked nutrition labels when they purchased processed foods. When understanding of nutrition information on labels of snacks in differently sized packaging was tested, over 80% of the subjects understood nutrition information accurately. Five different package sizes were studied. Of these 5, packages containing about 200% of one standard serving showed the highest rate of misunderstanding of total energy contents per container. Interestingly, the students most strongly preferred containers that contained 300% of one standard serving. From these results, we conclude that students consider the current recommendation for a serving size to be small, which may be related to misreading of nutrition labels of snacks that come in packages containing less than 300% of one standard serving size. To improve accurate understanding of nutrition labels of snacks, total package labels or dual column labels on packages containing less than 300% of one standard serving size should be considered.

Amendment Scheme of Labeling Regulation for Functionality of Dairy Products (한국의 기능성 유제품 표시제도 개선방안)

  • The labeling for functionality of food or food components are recognized globally and are essential for the growth of dairy product industry. To expand the functional claims of dairy product especially fermented milk product, the regulations restricting the labeling of functionality should be amended as soon as possible. The labeling regulations of functionality and efficacy for processed and functional foods in related Acts and subordinated statues such as definition, scope of claims, etc. were reviewed and the problems existed in the system were identified. The definition and classification of efficacy for processed food in Food Sanitation Act were analyzed to revise the labeling regulation of dairy product. A draft of amended labeling regulation for the functionality of dairy product is proposed, which provides consumers with appropriate information of beneficial effects on health purpose for human body structure and function. In order to develop the dairy products and related industries, these contents should be considered when the annexed Table 14 in the Enforcement Rule of the Processing of Livestock Products Act is amended.

Class-Labeling Method for Designing a Deep Neural Network of Capsule Endoscopic Images Using a Lesion-Focused Knowledge Model

  • Capsule endoscopy is one of the increasingly demanded diagnostic methods among patients in recent years because of its ability to observe small intestine difficulties. It is often conducted for 12 to 14 hours, but significant frames constitute only 10% of whole frames. Thus, it has been designed to automatically acquire significant frames through deep learning. For example, studies to track the position of the capsule (stomach, small intestine, etc.) or to extract lesion-related information (polyps, etc.) have been conducted. However, although grouping or labeling the training images according to similar features can improve the performance of a learning model, various attributes (such as degree of wrinkles, presence of valves, etc.) are not considered in conventional approaches. Therefore, we propose a class-labeling method that can be used to design a learning model by constructing a knowledge model focused on main lesions defined in standard terminologies for capsule endoscopy (minimal standard terminology, capsule endoscopy structured terminology). This method enables the designing of a systematic learning model by labeling detailed classes through differentiation of similar characteristics.

Current Regulatory Status of Nutritional Labeling in Advanced Countries (최근 외국의 영양표시 실태와 운영 현황)

  • This study was to investigate current regulatory status of nutrition labeling in advanced countries, such as US and Japan. In US, the mandatory and voluntary components and the order in which they must appear are total calories, total fat, cholesterol, sodium, potassium, total carbohydrate, protein vitamin and iron. The amount of each nutrient must be reported on the basis of the serving size except vitamines and minerals. In Japan, new regulatation on nutrition labeling was made in 1995. For nutrition labeling on processed food, a standard must be appeared and it is mandatory. The union of Europe and Codex also newly regulated on nutrition labeling. It is time to make new regulation on nutrition labeling for being advanced country.

  • A power cordial labeling of a graph G = (V (G), E(G)) is a bijection f : V (G) → {1, 2, ..., |V (G)|} such that an edge e = uv is assigned the label 1 if f(u) = (f(v))n or f(v) = (f(u))n, for some n ∈ ℕ ∪ {0} {0} and the label 0 otherwise, then the number of edges labeled with 0 and the number of edges labeled with 1 differ by at most 1. In this paper, we study power cordial labeling and investigate power cordial labeling for some standard graph families.

  • In this paper, we propose new algorithms to construct video object planes(VOP’s) for MPEG-4. VOP’s allow the new video standard MPEG-4 to enable content-based funtionalities. A comprehensive review summarizes some of the most important VOP’s generation techniques that have been proposed. The proposed algorithm use segmentation technique as labeling and motion estimation as three-step search algorithm(TSS). It is improved by a labeling technique that distinguishes background and object from a frame.

A Circle Labeling Scheme without Re-labeling for Dynamically Updatable XML Data (동적으로 갱신가능한 XML 데이터에서 레이블 재작성하지 않는 원형 레이블링 방법)

  • XML has become the new standard for storing, exchanging, and publishing of data over both the internet and the ubiquitous data stream environment. As demand for efficiency in handling XML document grows, labeling scheme has become an important topic in data storage. Recently proposed labeling schemes reflect the dynamic XML environment, which itself provides motivation for the discovery of an efficient labeling scheme. However, previous proposed labeling schemes have several problems: 1) An insertion of a new node into the XML document triggers re-labeling of pre-existing nodes. 2) They need larger memory space to store total label. etc. In this paper, we introduce a new labeling scheme called a Circle Labeling Scheme. In CLS, XML documents are represented in a circular form, and efficient storage of labels is supported by the use of concepts Rotation Number and Parent Circle/Child Circle. The concept of Radius is applied to support inclusion of new nodes at arbitrary positions in the tree. This eliminates the need for re-labeling existing nodes and the need to increase label length, and mitigates conflict with existing labels. A detailed experimental study demonstrates efficiency of CLS.

Scale Invariant Auto-context for Object Segmentation and Labeling

  • In complicated environment, context information plays an important role in image segmentation/labeling. The recently proposed auto-context algorithm is one of the effective context-based methods. However, the standard auto-context approach samples the context locations utilizing a fixed radius sequence, which is sensitive to large scale-change of objects. In this paper, we present a scale invariant auto-context (SIAC) algorithm which is an improved version of the auto-context algorithm. In order to achieve scale-invariance, we try to approximate the optimal scale for the image in an iterative way and adopt the corresponding optimal radius sequence for context location sampling, both in training and testing. In each iteration of the proposed SIAC algorithm, we use the current classification map to estimate the image scale, and the corresponding radius sequence is then used for choosing context locations. The algorithm iteratively updates the classification maps, as well as the image scales, until convergence. We demonstrate the SIAC algorithm on several image segmentation/labeling tasks. The results demonstrate improvement over the standard auto-context algorithm when large scale-change of objects exists.
