A full-scope replica type simulator whose MCR(main control room) has the same features and operation functions as MCR of the reference power plant has been developed for a fossil power plant. This simulator was developed with the model of Poryung Fossil Power Plant #3,4 which is the standard model of the Korean fossil power plant. It is the first localized simulator for the supercritical, variable boiler pressure type fossil power plant. The simulator provides various kinds of accidents which are in normal plant operation and thus enables operators to recover or reduce possible damages. To design and develop this kind of simulator, we need to integrate high technologies such as system analysis, plant operation and system integration of mechanics, physics, computer science. CASE(Computer Aided Software Engineering) tools were used to develop the dynamic model. This simulator will greatly contribute to the improvement of the safety and efficiency of the fossil power plant by implementing operator training. In this paper, the outline of software and hardware configuration and characteristics of the simulator are described, and the results of 30%, 50%, 75%, 100% load operation test will be discussed.

In view of the frequent start-ups and load changes in the recent past, there is a need for fossil-fuel power plants to be more efficient and reliable for long-term operation. Under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, severe creep and fatigue damages can occur in major plant facilities, particularly, turbines and boilers. For highly stable operation and better maintenance, various techniques that facilitate a systematic assessment of the service life of critical facilities have been developed. However, to date, in Korea, to evaluate the remaining life of major facilities of fossil power plant, qualitative or semiquantitative analyses are carried out without following any standard guidelines or procedure. In this study, a standard code for assessing the remaining life of major plant facilities is proposed. This code takes into account creep and fatigue damage, which are generally accepted as dominant causes of damage to facilities. KEPIC (Korea Electric Power Industry code) is scheduled to include this guideline in 2010.
A control system has been being developed by korean engineers for 500MW korean standard type fossil power plant with the advent of retrofit of old control system. Simulators have been used for digital I&C system pre-tests and validation tests in nuclear power plants. In this paper, the power plant simulator for control system V&V was developed in order to verify the developed control system prior to application to a power plant. The control models were developed using plant control system data, translator programs, and vendor manuals. The developed simulator was verified by steady-state test, load swing test, transient test and so on.
The simulator models for 500MW fossil power plant have been developed, and interconnected with the turbine control system to test and validate the digital instrumentation & control (I&C) systems before they are implemented in operating power plants. When the performance of a selected digital I&C system is tested, the corresponding simulator model is replaced by the plant digital I&C systems which is considered as a non-tunable system. The input/out variables of simulator models and control systems were mapped using the LabView in interface systems. This paper describes the interconnection method between the simulator model and the digital I&C system, and summarizes the validation test results performed at the condition of steady-state operation, normal evolution, and malfunction. The integrated validation method of digital I&C systems using the simulator models showed that the simulator can be used as a test bed for the implementation of digital I&C systems in power plants.

The mechanical integrity of generator stator windings is one of the critical point because the electric power is generated and conducted to power system through these windings. De-mineralized water is used to cool stator bars during the normal operation of generator in large power plants because the water cooled method has highest cooling efficient. Water absorption of bar insulation is progressed by several causes such as generation of water leak path by corrosion, delamination of insulation by vibration, and inadequate water treatment, etc.. Reliable water absorption diagnostics of generator stator bar is important to ensure the availability of power plant and to reduce maintenance cost by generator accident. It is described that the water absorption characteristics for generator stator bar insulation used in 500MW capacity standard fossil power plant by cooling water temperature. It is verified that the management of stator cooling water temperature is one of the important factors to decrease water absorption rate of generator stator bars.

A control system has been developed by korean engineers for 500MW korean standard type fossil power plant with the advent of retrofit of old control system. The developed control system is required to verify in terms of function and reliability prior to application to a power plant because a power plant is a very important facility in the industry. It is difficult to secure the enough period for installing the control system and commissioning due to the gradual increase of power demand and competitive power market environment. It is essential to verify the control system in order to reduce trial and error cases during overhaul period for application of control system to the power plant. This paper shows the case study of a functional test of a station of control system for power plant.
The use of eco-friendly energy in the offshore plant system is expanding because conventional generators are operated by fossil fuel or natural gas. Eco-friendly energy, which replaces existing power generation methods, should be capable of generating the power for lighting protection equipment, airborne fault indication, parameter measurement, and others. Most of the eco-friendly energy used in offshore plant facilities is solar and wind power. In the case of using photovoltaic power, because the structure must be constructed based as flat solar panels, it can be damaged easily by the wind. Therefore, there is a need for a new generation system composed of a spherical structure that does not require a separate structure and is less influenced by the wind. Considering these characteristics, in this study we designed, fabricated, and tested a unit that could provide the most efficient spherical photovoltaic power generation considering wind direction and wind pressure. Our test results indicated that the proposed system reduced costs because it did not require any separate structure, used eco-friendly energy, reduced carbon dioxide emissions, and expanded the proportion of eco-friendly energy use by offshore plant facilities.
It is required that a developed control system should be verified using simulator in terms of functionality and reliability prior to application to a power plant that is a very critical facility in the industry. In this paper, the control model for turbine bypass system was developed for power plant simulator. In order to develop the control model for turbine bypass system, the tool that can be used to implement turbine bypass control logic was developed based on the turbine bypass control system manual. The developed tool was merged into the simulator development environment. The functionality of the developed tool was verified via the simulation based on the each function block specification. The HP turbine bypass pressure control logic was implemented using the developed tool and was integrated with process models and other control models such as boiler control model, turbine control model and boiler feed water pump turbine control model for 500 MW korean standard type fossil power plant. Finally, the validity of the developed control model was shown via simulation result under the integrated simulation environment.

As Korean government has activated the renewable portfolio standard (RPS) since 2012, producers have been seeking and using the various renewable resources to meet the RPS quota. One of these efforts, Power Bio-Fuel oil demonstration project is being conducted to check the operability and compatibility with fossil fuel, Fuel oil (B-C) from 2014. The oil is a mixture of vegetable oil and animal fat or fatty acid ester of them and should satisfy some specification to use the power generation. The oil's quality and combustion characteristics are different from conventional oil, Fuel oil (B-C) in current power plant facility. In this study, it was investigated the storage stability and malodor intensity of Bio-Fuel oil.
