Effects of Goat Milk and Fermented Goat Milk on Reproductive Function and Stamina of the Male Rodent (산양유 및 산양유 발효유가 웅성 설치류의 생식기능과 지구력에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of goat milk and fermented goat milk on reproductive function and stamina of male rodent. Methods: Experiment I: Male ICR mouse was divided into four groups. Group 1 none-treated control; Group 2 received saline; Group 3 received cow milk 10 ml/kg per day for 15 days; Group 4 received goat milk 10 ml/kg per day for 15 days. The cauda epididymal sperm motility and testicular sperm production were investigated. Experiment II: Male SD rat was divided into three groups. Group 1 received saline; Group 2 received goat milk 10 ml/kg per day for 28 days; Group 3 received fermented goat milk 10 ml/kg per day for 28 days. The cauda epididymal sperm motility and testicular sperm production were also investigated. The concentration of testosterone in serum at 1 and 3 weeks after treatment was determined using Immulite 2000 kit. Testes, epididymis, prostate, and seminal vesicle were weighed. Experiment III: Male ICR mouse was divided into four groups. Group 1 none-treated control; Group 2 received saline; Group 3 received goat milk 10 ml/kg per day for 4 weeks; Group 4 received fermented goat milk 10 ml/kg per day for 4 weeks. After treatment, the mouse was forced to swim to test for stamina. Results: In Experiment I, the cauda epididymal sperm motility after in vitro culture for 1 or 3 h was significantly (p<0.05) higher in cow milk and goat milk than in the control and saline. There was no significant difference in the cauda epidymal sperm motility between cow and goat milk. The testicular spermatid number was significantly (p<0.01) higher in goat milk (222.8${\times}10^6$) than in the control (108.6), saline (98.2), and cow milk (118.2). In Experiment II, the cauda epididymal sperm motility after in vitro culture for 1 h was significantly (p<0.05) higher in fermented goat milk than in saline and goat milk. There was no significant difference in the cauda epidymal sperm motility between saline and goat milk but goat milk showed slightly higher sperm motility than saline. After in vitro culture for 3 h, the cauda epididymal sperm motility was significantly (p<0.01) higher in fermented goat milk and goat milk than in saline. The testicular spermatid number was significantly (p<0.05) higher in goat milk than in saline, and significantly (p<0.01) higher in fermented goat milk than in saline. And the serum testosterone levels of rats administered with goat milk or fermented goat milk were increased but were no significant difference among three groups. Also the prostate weight was significantly (p<0.05) increased in the goat and fermented goat milk. In Experiment III, the swimming time in the goat milk and fermented goat milk groups was significantly (p<0.01) longer than in the control and saline. There was no significant difference in the swimming time between goat and fermented goat milk but the fermented goat milk showed slightly longer swimming time than the goat milk. Conclusion: The cauda epididymal sperm motility, the testicular spermatid number and stamina were improved when the mice and rats were drunk with goat milk or fermented goat milk.

A Case Report of Primary Insomnia treated by Oryeong-san decoction (오령산(五苓散)으로 호전된 일차성 불면증 1례 임상 보고)

  • Objective : This case report aims to demonstrate the effect of Oryeong-san on Insomnia. Methods : A 26 year old woman suffered from insomnia with mental and physical exhaustion, reduced stamina, lack of concentration in daytime. According to Diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions, the patient was diagnosed with Taeyang-byung and treated by Oryeong-san decoction. The result of administration was evaluated by Insomnia Severity Index. Results : After administration of Oryeong-san decoction for 1 month, Insomnia Severity Index was decreased from 24(clinical insomnia, severe) to 1(no clinically significant insomnia). Conclusions : The patient completely recovered from insomnia and daytime symptoms as treated by Oryeong-san decoction according to Diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions.

A Study on the Developing Direction of New Samgye-Tang Products (삼계탕 신제품 개발방향에 관한 조사 연구)

  • The major objective of this study is provide to basic data for developing of new Sangye-Tang products. The findings from this study are as follow. Consumers over half were thought Samgye-Tang products to be good for health. At the eating place of Samgye-Tang products, \"at home\" ranked high in their groups. Also consumers have eaten Samgye-Tang products for the good of their health. On the developing functional Samgye-Tang products, respondents over 80% showed that it is desirable to develop functional Samgye-Tang products. And it is indicated that consumers want to strengthen the physical stamina in the new Samgye-Tang products. Price is the most important factor in selecting the new Samghye-Tang products. In packaging, consumers have preferred retort pouch.

  • This research is about Department of Emergency medical services students' cognition type of female 119 paramedics. The purpose of this research is to understand department of emergency medical servises students' cognition of female 119 paramedics and identify characteristics classified by types. To this end, applying Q-method, this research objectively analyzes 72 department of emergency medical services students' reaction who complete the field training about ambulance about female 119 paramedics. The result of the department of emergency medical services students recognized type of female 119 paramedics could be typed into four types. The type I is recognized as "Stamina limit type", the type II as "expert type", the type III as "guardian angel type", and the type IV as "feminine experience type". The type I has 28.3%, the type II has 12.7%, the type III has 6%, and the type IV has 3.8% explanation power, and these explain 51% of total variable. Generally department of emergency medical services students' cognition of female 119 paramedic is that they are expert in first aid but students' cognition is negative because of female 119 paramedic's limit of stamina, exposure to danger, and giving birth and infant care thus we should arrange solution of these cognition.

The effects of a 24 Weeks of combined exercise programs have on physical configuration, blood components and physical strength for normal and geriatric diseased senior citizens residing in the country side (중소도시 노인들의 24주간 복합운동 프로그램이 성인병 질환자 및 정상인의 신체구성, 혈액성분, 체력에 미치는 영향)

  • This thesis is to research the before and after changes of physical configurations, blood components and physical strength for normal and geriatric diseased senior citizens at the end of 24 week of combined exercises constructed of aerobic and muscular strength training to create most suitable and effective complex exercise program for geriatric diseased patients. For this experiment 20 normal and 20 geriatric diseased patients in the age of 65 residing in "K" city were selected to carry out the 24 weeks of combined exercises in regularly. The result of the research showed that geriatric patients increased significantly in everything, but normal group showed significant change in only WHR. There was a slight improvement in the blood components for the average participants but it only differed slightly from the diseased participants so there were no major changes reflecting the outcomes from both before and after. After concluding the program both groups displayed positive improvements in stamina but no significant alterations in physical strength., agility, muscle endurance and balance. The positive factors for each groups could be that the norms were able to maintain their health and enhancement in stamina and diseased were able to prevent their condition from worsening. Additionally, over 50 percent of all senior citizens have one or more geriatric diseases but the participation of any physical activity is in the decrease. Henceforth, this is a field that still needs a lot of work and combined exercise programs should be created and followed through so it may enhance in the improvement of health and quality of life as well.

A Surrey of Japanese Perception and Preference for Kimchi (김치에 대한 일본인의 인식 및 기호도 조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate Japanese perception and preference for Kimchi. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 605 Japanese (male 224, female 381) residing in Kobe, Kyoto, Osaka, Himezi, and Tokyo. Of the respondents, 90.2% have not visited Korea however, 83.3% experienced Korean food. On their first impression of Kimchi, 56.9% answered that it was ‘good’, and 65.4% answered ‘good’ for their after taste impression. Total 92.7% of the respondents, answered nationality of kimchi is ‘Korea’. The most familiar kimchi is Baechu kimchi, and they preferred the part from white stem of the Chinese cabbage. On their perception of kimchi, ‘Kimchi is stamina food’ had the highest score of 4.17${\pm}$1.11 from male and 4.25${\pm}$0.85 from female, respectively. Their favorite sub-materials were red pepper (37.4%), radishes (33.6%) and garlic (28.4%), and unfavorable sub-materials were anchovy (28.4%) and garlic (16.5%). The most popalar dishes using Kimchi were Kimchi Ramyun (84.0%) and Kimchi Bokumbab (60.7%).

Volatile Flavor Composition of White-flowered Lotus by Solid-phase Microextraction (Solid-Phase Microextraction에 의한 백련의 휘발성 향기 성분 분석)

  • This study investigated the chemical composition of headspace gas from white-flowered lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertner). Volatile flavor compositions of headspace from white-flowered lotus (floral leaf, stamen, flower stalk, stem) were investigated through the solid-phase microextraction method using polydimethylsiloxane-divinylbenzene fiber. The headspace was directly transferred to a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Sixty-three volatile flavor constituents were detected in the headspace of lotus floral leaves, and undecanoic acid (7.81%) was the most abundant component. Fifty-three volatile flavor constituents were detected in the headspace of lotus stamina, and isobutylidene phthalide (7.94%) was the most abundant component. Forty-four volatile flavor constituents were detected in the headspace of lotus flower stalks, and 3-butyl dihydrophthalide (11.23%) was the most abundant component. Fifty-nine volatile flavor constituents were detected in the headspace of lotus stems, and ligustilide (16.15%) was the most abundant component. The content of phthalides was higher in the headspace of flower stalks and stems, while alcohols and acids were the predominant compounds in lotus floral leaves.

Study on the expected efficacies of the Asparagi Tuber by analysis of single-medicine prescriptions on the Korean medicinal literatures (한의학 고문헌의 단방용례 분석을 통한 천문동의 기대효능 연구)

  • We referred to twenty-two Korean medicinal literatures for application of a single-medicine prescription using Asparagi Tuber(Asparagus cochinchinensis) to form the groundwork for scientific modernization of Korean medicine. Our study revealed the following. 1. Principle expectant effects of Asparagi Tuber were prolong life; elevation of stamina or activity; improvement of asthenia; remedy of epilepsy, mental disease or convulsions; relief of xerosis; treatment of tumor, abscess or intumescence; extermination of endoparasite; solution of numbness, etc. 2. The records show that 95% of directions are per oral. 3. 38% of the cases, Asparagi Tuber was used without its jacket or core. 4. Alcohol and honey were generally used as solvent and additive. We suggest to perform the further studies for the scientific verification of the expectant effects of Asparagi Tuber and its different efficacy by processing, solvent and additives.

Effects of Extracts from Oja on Testosterone Synthesis in Leydig Cells (五子 추출물이 Leydig 세포 내 testosterone 합성에 미치는 영향)

  • Traditionally, 5 kinds of fruits with "ja(子)" in their name, including Rubus coreanus, Schisandra chinensis, Lycinum chineuse, Torilidis fructus, and Cuscuta seed, collectively called Oja(五子), are long known to enhance stamina. In the present study, we replaced tosaja with gyeolmyeongja(Cassiae semen ) and examined the effects of extracts from these fruits on andropause. This study investigated the antioxidant effect and testosterone synthesis of Oja water extract on Leydig TM3 cells. To investigate whether hydrogen peroxide induces oxidative stress in Leydig cells, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(MTT) assay, nitric oxide assay, and testosterone assay were performed on mouse Leydig TM3 cells. The results were obtained as follows: Leydig TM3 cells viability was assessed by a modified MTT assay, and the protection effect of Oja water extract against hydrogen peroxide-induced cell oxidative stress were examined by mitochondrial activity. Oja water extract could efficiently protect cytotoxicity induced by H2O2. Oja water extract promoted testosterone synthesis. These results suggest that Oja water extract has protective roles and promotes steroidogenesis in Leydig cells through its anti-oxidant action.

Effects of Lycium chinense Miller Fruit and its Constituent Betaine on Immunomodulation in Balb/c Mice

  • BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of Lycium chinense Miller fruit and its representative constituent betaine on reduction of immobility time and blood parameters in balb/c mice. METHODS AND RESULTS: We investigated the immobility time and the changes in aspects of blood biochemical parameters by the administration of L. chinense Miller fruit and its representative constituent betaine, after the forced swimming test. The immobility time was significantly reduced about 41.3% and 53.6%, respectively, in the animal of L. chinense Miller fruit and its representative constituent betaine-administrated group for 7 days, in comparison with that of the control group. The level of blood urea nitrogen was significantly decreased in L. chinense Miller fruit and its representative constituent betaine-treated group compared with the control group (P < 0.05), respectively. In addition, the interlukin-2 levels of mice in L. chinense Miller fruit and betaine treated group was increased compared with the control group. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that L. chinense Miller fruit and betaine might be helpful in the immune function improvement, enhance physical stamina, and fatigue recovery.
