  • Axial-flow compressor is one of the most important parts of gas turbine units with axial turbine and combustor. Therefore, precise prediction of performance is very important for development of new compressor or modification of existing one. Meanline analysis is a simple, fast and powerful method for performance prediction of axial-flow compressors with different geometries. So, Meanline analysis is frequently used in preliminary design stage and performance analysis for given geometry data. Much correlations for meanline analysis have been developed theoretically and experimentally for estimating various types of losses and flow deviation angle for long time. In present study, meanline analysis program was developed to estimate compressor losses, incidence angles, deviation angles, stall and surge conditions with many correlations. Performance prediction of one stage axial compressors is conducted with this meanline analysis program. The comparison between experimental and numerical results show a good agreement. This meanline analysis program can be used for various types of single stage axial-flow compressors with different geometries, as well as multistage axial-flow compressors.

  • We developed a high-efficiency, wide-operating-range centrifugal blower stage to meet the demand for reduced total energy-consumption in sewage treatment plants. We improved the efficiency of the two-dimensional impeller using a shape optimization tool and one-dimensional performance prediction tool. A limit of the throat deceleration ratio was set to maintain the stall-margin of the impeller. The low solidity vaned diffuser and return channel were designed using a sensitivity analysis with orthogonal arrays and three-dimensional steady flow simulations. The low solidity diffuser was designed in order to improve the performance in the low-flow-rate region. The return channel was designed so that the total pressure loss in the return channel was minimized. Model tests of both the conventional and optimized blower stages were carried out, and the efficiency and operating range of both stages were compared. The optimized blower stage improved in stage efficiency by 3% and in operating range by 5% compared with the conventional blower stage.

  • We have designed a 32-bit microprocessor with fixed point digital signal processing functionality. This processor, combines both general-purpose microprocessor and digital signal processor functionality using the reduced instruction set computer design principles. It has functional units for arithmetic operation, digital signal processing and memory access. They operate in parallel in order to remove stall cycles after DSP or load/store instructions, which usually need one or more issue latency cycles in addition to the first issue cycle. High performance was achieved with these parallel functional units while adopting a sophisticated five-stage pipeline stucture.

  • A non-linear numerical simulation technique for predicting the unsteady performances of an airbreathing engine is developed. The study focuses on the simulation of integrated propulsion systems, where a closer coupling is needed between the airframe and the engine dynamics. In fact, the solution of the fully unsteady flow governing equations, rather than a lumped volume gas dynamics discretization, is essential for modeling the coupling between aero-servoelastic modes and engine dynamics in highly integrated propulsion systems. This consideration holds for any propulsion system when a full separation between the fluid dynamic time-scale and engine transient cannot be appreciated, as in the case of flow instabilities (e.g., rotating stall, surge, inlet unstart), or in case of sudden external perturbations (e.g., gas ingestion). Simulations of the coupling between external and internal flow are performed. The flow around the nacelle and inside the engine ducts (i.e., air intakes, nozzles) is solved by CFD computations, whereas the flow evolution through compressor and turbine bladings is simulated by actuator disks. Shaft work balance and rotor dynamics are deduced from the estimated torque on each turbine/compressor blade row.

  • This paper describes an application of centrifugal compressor optimization system, in which the blade profile of impeller is represented with NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) curve. A commercial CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) program named NUMECA fine/turbo was used to evaluate the performance of the whole centrifugal compressor flow passage including impeller and diffuser. The whole optimization design system was integrated based on iSIGHT, a commercial integration and optimization software, which provides a direct application of some optimization algorithms. To insure the practicability of optimization, the performance of centrifugal compressor under all condition was concerned during the optimizing process. That means a compositive object function considering the aerodynamic efficiency, pressure ratio and mass flow rate under different work condition was applied by using different weight number for different conditions. Using the optimization method described in this paper, an optimized design of the impeller blade of centrifugal compressor was obtained. Comparing to the original design, optimized design has a better performance not only under the design work condition, but also the off-design work condition including near stall and near choke condition.

  • Recently there is a growing interest in the airborne spread of virus. In particular, there is growing interest in secondary infection through the air in the hospital. The distribution of air-born virus depends on ventilation system installed in a hospital. In this study, simulations were carried out to predict the move of air-born virus by ventilation system at hospital. Simulation results showed that pressure distribution was -372.05Pa ~ -3.45 Pa at 1st floor incase of only used mechanical exhaust at bathroom, shower stall, storage, kitchen etc.. if ventilation switch from used mechanical exhaust to mechanical exhaust & mechanical supply. Simulation results showed that pressure distribution was -336.44Pa at stair hall < -0.2Pa at bathroom < mean 1.19Pa at other room. So simulation results showed that using all of the mechanical supply and mechanical exhaust was more effective then the mechanical exhaust for maintain the pressure distribution in hospital. It was also showed that when using the mechanical supply and mechanical exhaust more effectively prevention of air born virus diffusion.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of closed-chain exercise on weight supporting rate change within hemiplegic side and static dynamic balance ability in stroke patients. Methods : The subjects of the study were 13 hemiplegic patients who carried out closed-kinematic chain exercise program over 6 weeks. The exercises of the program are stand to sit with stall bar, stair-up & down by a hemiplegic leg and bridging exercise crossing the non-hemiplegic leg onto the hemiplegic leg. Each exercise was carried out over 3 sets of 10reps. Results : The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. After intervention, there was a statistically significant change in the weight supporting rate within hemiplegic and non-hemiplegic side(P<0.05). 2. After intervention, there was a statistically significant change in the static balance(FICSIT-4) ability(P<0.05). 3. After intervention, there was a statistically significant change in the dynamic balance(FSST, TUG, FRT) ability(P<0.05). Conclusion : The results of the study suggests that closed-chain exercise program in stroke patients improves their weight supporting rate and enhance the static dynamic balance.

  • Performance of a NACA 634-021 hydrofoil in motion under and in close proximity of a free surface for a large range of angles of attack is studied. Lift and drag coefficients of the hydrofoil at different submergence depths are investigated both numerically and experimentally, for 0° ≤ AoA ≤ 30° at a Reynolds number of 105. The results of the numerical study are in good agreement with the experimental results. The agreement confirms the new finding that for a submerged hydrofoil operating at high angles of attack close to a free surface, the interaction between the hydrofoil-motion induced waves on the free surface and the hydrofoil results in mitigation of the flow separation characteristics on the suction side of the foil and delay in stall, and improvement in hydrofoil performance. In comparing with a baseline case, results suggest a 55% increase in maximum lift coefficient and 90% average improvement in performance for, based on the lift-to-drag ratio, but it is also observed significant decrease of lift-to-drag ratio at lower angles of attack. Flow details obtained from combined finite volume and volume of fluid numerical methods provide insight into the underlying enhancement mechanism, involving interaction between the hydrofoil and the free surface.
