  • The current study presents experimental research on a parabolic trough collector with tube and cavity receivers. The primary concentrating parabolic reflector is designed for an aperture area of 2×2 m2 with mirror-polished stainless steel sheet reflectors. The cavity receiver consists of a compound parabolic secondary reflector and a copper tube. Both the conventional tube receiver and the cavity receiver tube are coated with black powder. The experiments are carried out to compare the efficiency of the cavity receiver with the tube receiver for fluid temperature rise, thermal efficiency, and overall losses. The experiments showed significantly higher fluid temperature rise and overall efficiency and lower thermal losses for the cavity receiver compared to the tube receiver within the parameters explored in this study.

  • Full-beads of multi-layer steel engine head gaskets that are used to seal the combustion gas between the head and the block are subject to cyclic bending stresses due to the variation of the head/block gap during engine operation. The S-N curve for the fatigue durability assessment of the full-bead formed on NBR-coated SUS301 thin plate is deduced from the axial fatigue test results because of the difficulty in conducting the bending fatigue test of thin plate. The experimental verification of the deduced S-N curve is presented. It is shown that the NBR coating increases the endurance limit of the plate significantly. Mechanism of crack nucleation and propagation in the full-bead is discussed with photographs of the fatigue cracks.

  • In this study, bipolar plates in fuel cells are formed using rubber forming process. The effects of important parameters in rubber forming such as hardness and thickness of rubber pad, speed and pressure of punch that compress blank, and physical property of materials on the channel depth were analyzed. In the soft material sheet Al1050, deeper channels are formed than in materials STS304 and Ti-G5. Formed channel depth was increased when hardness of rubber pad was lower, thickness of rubber pad was high, and speed and pressure of punch were high. It was found the deepest channel was achieved when forming process condition was set with punch speed and pressure at 30 mm/s and 55 MPa, respectively using rubber pad having hardness Shore A 20 and thickness 60 mm. The channel depths of bipolar plates formed with Al1050, STS304 and Ti-G5 under the above process condition were 0.453, 0.307, and 0.270 mm, respectively. There were no defects such as wrinkle, distortion, and crack found from formed bipolar plates.

  • A 3-cell stacked anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell was designed and fabricated to achieve a complete gas seal and the facile stacking of components. The stack was assembled with a unit cell with $10{\times}10cm^2$ area, and each cell was interconnected by a stainless steel 430 separator using a proprietary sealant sheet. The stack performance was examined at various gas flow rates of $H_2+3.5vol%\;H_2O$, and air at a fixed temperature of $800^{\circ}C$. No gas leakage was found from the sealing between cells and inter-connects within a measurement system in this research during a prolonged time of 500 h in operation. The test resulted in an open circuit voltage of 3.12 V, a peak power of 149 W, and a power density of $0.61W/cm^2$, while the long term durability of the power showed 19.1% degradation during the prolonged time of 500 h when tested at $800^{\circ}C$.

  • Cold forging die for metal scissor is made by electric discharge machine. The impression of female die is made by electric discharge machine, the heat treatment is applied, and the impression is polished. When we forge goods by using this kind of die, the abrasion is severe and the crack occurs after forging about 240 strokes. Because the die should be frequently produced in the case, the cost rises, the work is delayed, and the precesion of goods is not good. Therefore, the electric discharge machine was not used in this study. Main die was produced by making hob, installing the hob to cold hobbing press, indenting the die material, and cold hobbing the impression. The die life was increased to 5,000-6,000 strokes in this case. In the future study, the die life will be increased to 10,000 strokes by changing the following : (1) the pre-treatment of slug, (2) the structure of die block, (3) the heat treatment of die material

  • (Ti, Al)N films were deposited on 304 stainless steel sheet by D.C. magnetron sputtering using Al target and Ti plate. The high temperature oxidation of (T, Al)N films with the variation of composition has been investigated. The chemical composition of (Ti, Al)N films with the variation of composition has been investigated. The chemical composition of (Ti, Al)N films was similar to the sputter area ratio of titanium to aluminum target by means of EDS and AES survey. The high temperature oxidation test of (Ti, Al)N showed that (Ti, Al)N has better high temperature resistance than TiN and TiC films. TiC films were cracked at 40$0^{\circ}C$ in air TiN films quickly were oxidised at $600^{\circ}C$, were spalled more than $700^{\circ}C$. But (Ti, Al)N films are relatively stable to$ 900^{\circ}C$. The good resistance to high temperature oxida-tion of (Ti, Al)N films are due to the formation of dense Al2O3 and TiO2 oxide layer. Especially, Al2O3 oxide layer is more important. The results obtained from this study show, it is believe that the (Ti, Al)N film by D.C. magnetron sputtering is promising for the use of high temperature and wear resistance mate-rials.

  • The microstructures and mechanical properties of roll-bonded STS439/Al1050/STS304 clad materials were investigated after an annealing process at various temperatures. Interfacial layer was developed at the STS439/Al1050 and Al1050/STS304 interfaces at $550^{\circ}C$. STS439/Al1050/STS304 clad metals fractured suddenly in a single step and the fracture decreased with increasing annealing temperatures at $450^{\circ}C$. After annealing at $550^{\circ}C$, samples fractured in three steps with each layer fracturing independently. Interfacial layers formed at $550^{\circ}C$ with a high Vickers microhardness were found to be brittle. During tensile testing, periodic parallel cracks were observed at the interfacial reaction layer. Observed micro-void between Al1050 and the interfacial layer was found to weaken the Al1050/reaction layer interface, leading to the total separation between Al1050 and the reaction layer.

  • In the era of smart manufacturing, precise prediction of springback-a common issue in ultra-thin sheet metal forming- and forming limits are critical for ensuring high-quality production and minimizing waste. This paper presents a novel approach that leverages the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to enhance springback and forming limits prediction accuracy. By integrating IoT-enabled sensors and devices, real-time data on material properties, forming conditions, and environmental factors are collected and transmitted to a central processing unit. This data serves as the input for an ANN model, which is trained with crystal plasticity simulations and experimental data to predict springback with high precision. Our proposed system not only provides continuous monitoring and adaptive learning capabilities but also facilitates real-time decision-making in manufacturing processes. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in prediction accuracy compared to traditional methods, highlighting the potential of IoT and ANN integration in advancing smart manufacturing. This approach promises to revolutionize quality control and operational efficiency in the industry, paving the way for more intelligent and responsive manufacturing systems.

  • Oblique angle deposition (OAD) is a physical vapor deposition where incident vapor flux arrives at non-normal angles. It has been known that tilting the substrate changes the properties of the film, which is thought to be a result of morphological change of the film. In this study, OAD has been applied to prepare single and multilayer TiN films by cathodic arc deposition. TiN films have been deposited on cold-rolled steel sheets and stainless steel sheet. The deposition angle as well as substrate temperature and substrate bias was changed to investigate their effects on the properties of TiN films. TiN films were analyzed by color difference meter, scanning electron microscopy, nanoindenter and x-ray diffraction. The color of TiN films was not much changed according to the deposition conditions. The slanted and zigzag structures were observed from the single and multilayer films. The relation between substrate tilting angle (${\alpha}$) and the growth column angle (${\beta}$) followed the equation of $tan{\alpha}=2tan{\beta}$. The indentation hardness of TiN films deposited by OAD was low compared with the ones prepared at normal angle. However, it has been found that $H^3/E^2$ ratio of 3-layer TiN films prepared at OAD condition was a little higher than the ones prepared at normal angle, which can confirm the robustness of prepared films.

  • We developed non-metallic electrodes that can replace metallic electrodes of the electrostatic precipitator(ESP) for the purpose of light weight, corrosion resistance, cost reduction. We manufactured three types of collection electrodes made of stainless steel (M), Carbon ink coating layer-Plastic sheet-Carbon ink coating layer (CPC), and Plastic sheet-Carbon ink coating layer-Plastic sheet (PCP). We studied the collection efficiency of a two-stage ESP using oil mist particles with and without collection stage by changing the flow rate, the material of collection electrode, and the applied voltage of the pre-charger module and the collection module. Here we measured concentrations of particles at diameters of 0.45 ㎛ (CMD; count median diameter) and 3.0 ㎛ (MMD : mass median diameter), as well as PM2.5 and PM10. As a result of the experiment, two-stage ESP had 22~25% higher collection efficiency in PM2.5 than one-stage ESP at the same applied voltage. The difference in collection efficiency by varying the materials of collection electrodes was less than 5%. The weight of the non-metallic electrode was only one eighth the weight of the metal electrode. CPC electrode had a thickness of 0.27 mm, which was 1.5 times thinner than a thickness of PCP electrode, so when the flow rate increased, the CPC electrodes couldn't be kept at equal intervals due to the fluttering unlike PCP electrodes. In addition, the PCP-CPC collection module of the present experiment followed the theoretical efficiency based on Deutsch equation and Cochet's charging theory.
