This paper presents the effects of the fin array and pitch on the frost layer growth of a heat exchanger. The numerical results are compared with experimental data of a cold plate to validate the present model, and agree well with experimental data within a maximum error of 8%. The characteristics of the frost formation on staggered fin array are somewhat different from those of in-line array. The frost layer at the first fin of the in-line array grows rapidly, compared to second fin, whereas the difference of the frost layer growth between the fins of the staggered array is small. For fin pitch below 10 mm, the frost layer growth of second fin in the staggered array is affected by that of first fin. The frost layer growth and heat transfer of single fin deteriorate with decreasing fin pitch regardless of fin array, however, the thermal performance of a heat exchanger, considering increase of heat surface area, becomes better.

This paper presents the effects of the fin array and pitch on the frost layer growth of a heat exchanger. The numerical results are compared with experimental data of a cold plate to validate the present model, and agree well with experimental data within a maximum error of 8%. The frost behaviors of the staggered fin array are somewhat different from those of in-line array. The frost layer formed on the first fin of the in-line array grows rapidly, compared to second fin, whereas the difference of the frost layer growth between the fins of the staggered array is small. For fin pitch below 10 m, the frost layer growth of second fin in the staggered array is affected by that of first fin. The thickness of the frost layer and heat transfer of single fin are reduced with decreasing fin pitch regardless of fin array. However, the thermal performance of a heat exchanger is enhanced due to the increase of heat transfer surface area.

A plate-fin-tube heat exchanger used for a $SF_{6}$ gas-insulated transformer is extremely important since the dissipation of the heat generated from inside coils has a significant effect on the performance as well as the durability of the transformer. The heat exchanger consists of corrugated plate fins and staggered array tube bundles for coolant. In order to find out heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics, series of numerical analyses for plate fins with enhanced surface geometries were conducted. Based on the results of the numerical analyses, an improved model of the plate fin has been proposed.

Average heat transfer coefficients and friction coefficients have been measured from staggered short pin-fin arrays to investigate the effect of fin shapes. Flow entering into the test section is a fully developed duct flow and the Reynolds number ranges from 5,000 to 25,000 based on fin diameter and average approaching velocity. The fin has three different shapes; uniform-diameter circular fin, two stepped-diameter circular fins. Average heat transfer rates change slightly with the fin shapes. However, friction loss(pressure loss) for the stepped-diameter fins is significantly less than that for the uniform-diameter fin. This results indicate that the stepped-diameter fin arrays in duct flow enhance heat transfer rates largely based on unit pumping power.

This paper describes the design optimization of a rotating rectangular channel with staggered arrays of pin-fins by Kriging metamodeling technique. Two non-dimensional variables, the ratio of the height to the diameter of the pin-fins and the ratio of the spacing between the pin-fins to the diameter of the pin-fins are chosen as the design variables. The objective function that is a linear combination of heat transfer and friction loss related terms with a weighting factor is selected for the optimization. To construct the Kriging model, objective function values at 20 training points generated by Latin hypercube sampling are evaluated by a three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis method with the SST turbulence model. The Kriging model predicts the objective function value that agrees well with the value calculated by the RANS analysis at the optimum point. The objective function is reduced by 11% by the optimization of the channel.

Development of a more satisfactory program of computing the performance on a multi-tube evaporator with continuous plate fins is attempted in this study. The fluid flow involving a change of phase make the flow properties and fluid friction factor of refrigerants, the heat transfer coefficients of refrigerant and air sides vary significantly. Taking such variations into account, a useful program is developed to predict the steady state performance of a multi-tube evaporator. The program was applied to an evaporator which has outside diameter of 10.05mm, inside diameter of 9.35mm, length of 5.4m and two rows arraied staggered. Then the variations of refrigerant quality, temperature, pressure, velocity, enthalpy, specific volume and air temperature, tube temperature were discussed. Satisfactory results were presented that the degree of superheat at the outlet side was $4.4^{\circ}C$ and the air temperature drop between the inlet and outlet of the air conditioner was $10^{\circ}C$.

Computer simulation was conducted to study performance characteristics of air-cooled condenser of a double effect absorption heat pump with variations of saturation pressures and mass flow rates of the refrigerant ; volume flow rates, relative humidities and temperatures of the air The vertically installed condenser had the staggered tube array with continuous plate fins of wavy type. When the saturation pressure of the condenser was decreased from 760 torr to 20 torr, heat transfer rates and condensing rates of refrigerant were decreased. If excess refrigerant flows in the condenser, the pressure and saturation temperature of the condenser were increased which makes the refrigerating capacity of an absorption heat pump reduced.

The catalytic heat exchanger, which integrates two functions of heat generation and heat exchange into one equipment, was designed and its characteristics were investigated by experiments. The surface of the fin tube was deposited with Pd catalyst. The conversion of the mixture in the catalytic heat exchanger was more significantly affected by the inlet velocity of the mixture than by the inlet temperature and equivalence ratio of the mixture. It was found that the catalytic surface area of the fin tubes should be sufficiently increased to make the combustion intensity of the catalytic heat exchanger as high as possible. Results showed that the fin tubes, placed in the triangularly staggered form, should be adjusted so that the mixture flows uniformly over all the catalytic fin surfaces.

Air-side forced convective heat transfer of a plate fin-tube heat exchanger is investigated by experimental measurement and numerical computation. The heat exchanger consists of staggered arrangement of refrigerant pipes of 10.2 m diameter and the pitch of fins is 3.5 m. In the experimental study, the forced convective heat transfer is measured at Reynolds number of 1082, 1397, 1486, 1591 and 1649 based on diameter of refrigerant piping and mean velocity. Average Nusselt number for the convective heat transfer coefficient is also computed for the same Reynolds number by commercial software of STAR-CD with standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. It is found that the relative errors of average Nusselt numbers between experimental and numerical data are less than 6 percentage in Reynolds number of $1082{\sim}1649$. The errors between experiment and other correlations are ranged from 7% to 32.4%. But the correlation of Kim at al is closest to the experimental data within 7% of the relative error.

The flow and thermal phenomena in flat tubes of radiator are analyzed numerically. To predict the characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop, the flow analysis program for three-dimensional complex geometry is developed, which adopted an non-staggered grid system and Cartesian velocities as dependent variables of the momentum equations. Using the developed program, the effect of tube specifications on the heat transfer characteristics is investigated for various flat tubes. From this study, the following results are obtained; (1) For the same hydraulic diameter($D_h{\doteq}5.2$mm), the Nusselt numbers of three basic modeis(D, J, and H-model) are 8.71, 8.92, and 10.58, respectively, and the pressure drops of D-, J-, and H-model are predicted as $-3.08{\times}10^{-2}\;Pa,\;-3.12{\times}10^{-2}\;Pa,\;and\; -3.98{\times}10^{-2}$ Pa, (2) In case of the same flat tube specification, the fins must be brazed at upper tube surface because the heat is more vividly transferred. Therefore, it is found that the H- model is the most effective tube as a heat exchanger and these results are used as a fundamental data for the design of tube.
