  • The Visualizations of the flowfield through tube banks with in-line and staggered arrangements were investigated by PIV. Strouhal numbers, velocity vectors and velocity profiles around the cylinders with in-line and staggered arrangements were observed at the pitch ratio $P_t/D=2.0$ and Reynolds number of $Re=4.0{\times}10^3$. As the results The flow patterns through tube banks were almost a straight line in case of the in-line arrangement while it was almost 八 type in case of the staggered arrangement in the direction of the wake. The average velocity in the rear region of the tube banks with the staggered arrangement was far smaller than that with the in-line arrangement. The Strouhal number in the last rank was far smaller than that in the front ranks in both of the in-line and staggered arrangements. The wake of each cylinder changed with time and with the position of the cylinder.

  • Flow interference is investigated between two tripped cylinders of identical diameter D at stagger angle ${\alpha}=0^{\circ}{\sim}180^{\circ}$ and gap spacing ratio $P^*$ (= P/D) = 0.1 ~ 5, where ${\alpha}$ is the angle between the freestream velocity and the line connecting the cylinder centers, and P is the gap width between the cylinders. Two tripwires, each of diameter 0.1D, were attached on each cylinder at azimuthal angle ${\beta}={\pm}30^{\circ}$, respectively. Time-mean drag coefficient ($C_D$) and fluctuating drag ($C_{Df}$) and lift ($C_{Lf}$) coefficients on the two tripped cylinders were measured and compared with those on plain cylinders. We also conducted surface pressure measurements to assimilate the fluid dynamics around the cylinders. $C_D$, $C_{Df}$ and $C_{Lf}$ all for the plain cylinders are strong function of ${\alpha}$ and $P^*$ due to strong mutual interference between the cylinders, connected to six interactions (Alam and Meyer 2011), namely boundary layer and cylinder, shear-layer/wake and cylinder, shear layer and shear layer, vortex and cylinder, vortex and shear layer, and vortex and vortex interactions. $C_D$, $C_{Df}$ and $C_{Lf}$ are very large for vortex and cylinder, vortex and shear layer, and vortex and vortex interactions, i.e., the interactions where vortex is involved. On the other hand, the interference as well as the strong interactions involving vortices is suppressed for the tripped cylinders, resulting in insignificant variations in $C_D$, $C_{Df}$ and $C_{Lf}$ with ${\alpha}$ and $P^*$. In most of the (${\alpha}$, $P^*$ ) region, the suppressions in $C_D$, $C_{Df}$ and $C_{Lf}$ are about 58%, 65% and 85%, respectively, with maximum suppressions 60%, 80% and 90%.

  • This experimental study investigated the characteristics of flow-induced vibration of two elastically supported circular cylinders in a side-by-side arrangement. In particular, the characteristics of the flow-induced vibration of the two cylinders are investigated by changing the flow speed at each spacing ratio L/D (L is the space between two cylinders and D is the diameter of the cylinder). To clarify the mechanism generating the flow-induced vibration of the cylinders, the flow patterns around the two vibrating cylinders are also investigated using a flow visualization test that reproduces the flow-induced vibration of the cylinders with a forced vibration apparatus. As a result, it is clarified that the flow-induced vibration characteristics of the two cylinders arranged side-by-side switch among four patterns as the flow between the two cylinders is switched. Among the three arrangements considered (tandem, staggered, and side-by-side), the arrangement that generates flow-induced vibration of the two cylinders most easily is the side-by-side arrangement.

  • This study measured the natural-convection heat transfer of two vertically staggered cylinders with varying vertical pitch-to-diameter ($P_v$/D) and horizontal pitch-to-diameter ($P_h$/D) ratios. The measured heat-transfer rates for the lower cylinder agreed well with the existing heat-transfer correlations for a single cylinder. At the smallest $P_v$/D, the rising plume from the lower cylinder provides the upper cylinder with a preheated flow, and the heat-transfer rates of the upper cylinder decrease, but increase very sensitively with $P_h$/D. However, at the largest $P_v$/D, the velocity effect dominates, and the heat-transfer rates of the upper cylinder are larger than that of a single cylinder, and decrease less sensitively with $P_h$/D. Even if $P_h$/D is increased, the heat-transfer rate of the upper cylinder is higher than that of the lower cylinder because of the chimney and side flow effects. This work expanded the flow ranges to turbulent flows. The cupric acid-copper sulfate ($H_2SO_4-CuSO_4$) electroplating system was adopted for the measurements of the mass-transfer rates instead of the heat-transfer experiments based on the analogy concept. The measurements were made by varying $P_v$/D (1.02-5) and $P_h$/D (0-2) in both laminar and turbulent flows. The Rayleigh number ranged from $1.5{\times}10^8$ to $2.5{\times}10^{10}$, and the Prandtl number was 2,014.

  • An experimental study has been performed to investigated the forced convection heat transfer characteristics of 6 circular cylinders in staggered arrangement in a cross flow of air. The water scale deposited on condenser wall of power plant was used to investigate the effect of roughness of scaled surfaces. The relative roughness*average diameter of scale/cylinder diameter) was in a range of k/d=0.0066, 0.0111, 0.0167, 0.0222 and 0.0278. The cylinder spacings(L/d) varies from 1.5 to 4.0 where L denote the cylinder spacings along and normal to the upstream uniform flow direction. The Reynolds number was varied in a range of 10, 000$\leq$ Re $\leq$ 50,000. The local and mean Nusselt numbers were investigated as a function of scale roughness, the cylinder spacing and Reynolds number. The results are compared with those of clean cylinder and inline tube bank, subsequently the mean fouling resistance over the entire circumference was estimated from those results as a function of scale roughness, the cylinder spacing and Reynolds number.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to measure the temperature fields for two and three staggered rows of the rectangular shaped-holes with high turbulence intensity. 10 % turbulence intensity is obtained by installation of two kinds of grids which have different shapes. One grid which is installed at 30d upstream from center of 1st row of holes is composed of vertical cylinders of which diameter is 10 mm and center to center distance is 18 mm. The other installed 15d apart to upstream from center of 1st row of holes which has square pattern is constructed of 3 rum square bars and bar spacing is 25 mm. Temperature fields are measured by using a thermocouple rake which is attached on three-axis traversing system. The results show that the overall values are decreased and the thicker film of coolant is fanned downstream of rows of holes for high mainstream turbulence intensity.

  • In most industrial applications, the geometrical complexity is combined with the moving boundaries. These problems considerably increase the computational difficulties since they require, respectively, regeneration and deformation of the grid. As a result, engineering flow simulation is restricted. In order to solve this kind of problems the immersed boundary method was developed. In this study, the immersed boundary method is applied to the numerical simulation of stationary, rotating and oscillating cylinders in the 2-dimensional square cavity. No-slip velocity boundary conditions are given by imposing feedback forcing term to the momentum equation. Besides, this technique is used with a second-order accurate interpolation scheme in order to improve the accuracy of flow near the immersed boundaries. The governing equations for the mass and momentum using the immersed boundary method are discretized on the non-staggered grid by using the finite volume method(FVM). This study presents the possibility of the immersed boundary method to apply to the complex flow experienced in the industrial applications.

  • An immersed boundary method for solving the Navier-Stokes and thermal energy equations is developed to compute the heat transfer over or inside the complex geometries in the Cartesian or cylindrical coordinates by introducing the momentum forcing, mass source/sink, and heat source/sink. The present method is based on the finite volume approach on a staggered mesh together with a fractional step method. The method of applying the momentum forcing and mass source/sink to satisfy the no-slip condition on the body surface is explained in detail in Kim, Kim and Choi (2001, Journal of Computational Physics). In this paper, the heat source/sink is introduced on the body surface or inside the body to satisfy the iso-thermal or iso-heat-flux condition on the immersed boundary. The present method is applied to three different problems : forced convection around a circular cylinder, mixed convection around a pair of circular cylinders, and forced convection around a main cylinder with a secondary small cylinder. The results show good agreements with those obtained by previous experiments and numerical simulations, verifying the accuracy of the present method.
