In this paper, we review the lowest order staggered discontinuous Galerkin methods on polygonal meshes in 2D. The proposed method offers many desirable features including easy implementation, geometrical flexibility, robustness with respect to mesh distortion and low degrees of freedom. Discrete function spaces for locally H1 and H(div) spaces are considered. We introduce special properties of a sub-mesh from a given star-shaped polygonal mesh which can be utilized in the construction of discrete spaces and implementation of the staggered discontinuous Galerkin method. For demonstration purposes, we consider the lowest case for the Poisson equation. We emphasize its efficient computational implementation using only geometrical properties of the underlying mesh.

In providing video-on-demand (VoD) services to a number of clients through networks, the bandwidth requirements of video transmission restrict VoD services. For this reason, many significant broadcasting-based VoD schemes have been proposed to efficiently support services. However, the broadcasting-based VoD schemes approach needs frequency channel hopping, using many channels at the same time and managing many segments of a video. These make it difficult to implement. In this paper, we propose a Harmonic Staggered broadcasting scheme which has a simple structure and substantially improved VoD efficiency. The numerical results demonstrate that the viewer's waiting time of the Harmonic Staggered broadcasting scheme is close to the harmonic broadcasting scheme and the maximum buffer requirements of this can be adapted for demanding rate by adjusting the short front part of a video sizes.
In order to analyze the role of axial carbon atoms in rotational barrier of ethane, we take the carbonless ethane, as a model, which is made of six hydrogens in coordinates of ethane. The energy of the system is calculated by McWeeny's open-shell restricted Hartree-Foch selfconsistent-field (RHF-SCF) method, and the transition density on the staggered-to-eclipsed rotation is examined. As being expected, the eclipsed form of the model is more stable than the staggered one. Through the transition density comparison of this model and real ethane, it is found that the existence of the axial carbon atoms induces the electronic density to be diluted in the vicinity of protonic sites and to be attracted to the region of carbon atoms or further to C-C bond region as the barrier is traversed. This migration of electronic charge tell us that the barrier to the internal rotation of ethane originates from the fact that the magnitude of electronic energy depression is not large enough to offset the increased nuclear-nuclear repulsion on the staggered-to-eclipsed rotation.

A periodic broadcasting is known as an efficient technique for delivering popular videos to reduce bandwidth requirements for transmitting streaming video to viewers in video-on-demand (VoD) services. However, the most periodic VoD schemes approach needs frequency channel hopping, many segments of video managing, and using many channel at the same time. These make it difficult to implement. In this paper, we propose a Staircase Staggered broadcasting scheme which has a simple structure and substantially improved VoD efficiency. The numerical results demonstrate that the viewer's waiting time of the Staircase Staggered broadcasting scheme is close to the staircase broadcasting scheme and the maximum buffer requirements of this can be adapted for demanding rate by adjusting the short front part of a video sizes.

On the Staggered Crosswalks, pedestrians cross the crosswalks two times. This method can reduce the cycle, the vehicle delay and the walking distance by increasing the major direction of green time. The safety of pedestrians is also effective. This study suggests the warrant of the facilities of island width and length etc. by considering the road structure and pedestrians. Also this study suggests the standard of the safety through the accident analysis of Staggered crosswalks and General Crosswalks. In the results, accident rate of the Staggered Crosswalks 18.3(100 million vehicle-km) was lower than the accident rate of the General Crosswalks 28.3(100million vehicle-km). By understanding the start point of crossing of the Staggered Crosswalks, the analysis of the location and types of accident suggests the safety zone(spare space). The setting warrants of Staggered Crosswalks are 4 lane over the road and the 2 meter over sidewalk width of island. The minimum length of the Pedestrian island was doubled compared to the crosswalks width. And the maximum length was set by considering the wait time of the pedestrians.
The present study numerically simulates the flow and heat transfer characteristics of rib-induced secondary flow in a square cooling channel with staggered V-shaped ribs, extruded on both walls. The rib pitch-to-height ratio (p/h) varies from 2.8 to 10 with the rib-height-to-hydraulic diameter ration (h/$D_h$)of 0.07 and the Reynolds number of 50,000. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence model. Computational results show that complex secondary flow patterns are generated in the channel due to the snaking flow in the streamwise direction for all tested cases. In the range of p/h=5 to 10 the staggered V-shaped rib gives about 3 times higher heat transfer augmentation than the reference smooth pipe with high heat transfer on both front side and the area around the leading edge of the ribs, while the former cases give about 18 times higher streamwise pressure drop than the latter ones. However, for the thermal performances, based on the equal pumping power condition, the case of p/h=2.8 gives the best result among three cases, mainly due to relatively low streamwise pressure drop, although it gives relatively low heat transfer augmentation.
The hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method is applied to simulate fluid-structure interaction of a two-dimensional orbiting flexible foil. The elastic deformation of the flexible foil is modelled based on the dynamic equation of a thin-plate. At each time step, the locations and velocities of the Lagrangian control points on the flexible foil are used to reconstruct the boundary conditions for the flow solver based on the hybrid staggered/non-staggered grid. To test the developed code, the flow fields around a flapping elliptical wing are calculated. The time history of the vertical force component and the evolution of the vorticity fields are compared with recent other computations and good agreement is achieved. For the orbiting flexible foil, the vorticity fields are compared with those of the case without the deformation. The combined effects of the angle of attack and the orbit on the deformation are investigated. The grid independency study is carried out for the computed time history of the deformation at the tip.

Turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics around staggered tube banks were studied using the 3-D Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation governing a steady incompressible flow, which were reformulated in a non-orthogonal coordinate system with cartesian velocity components and discretized by the finite volume method with a non-staggered variable arrangement. The predicted turbulent kinetic energy using RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was lower than that of standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model but showed same result for mean flow field quantities. The prediction of the skin friction coefficient using RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model showed better trend with experimental data than standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model result. The inclined flow showed higher velocity and skin friction coefficient than transverse flow because of extra strain rate ($\frac{{\partial}w}{{\partial}y}$). Also, this was why the inclined flow showed higher local heat transfer coefficient than the transverse flow.

This study experimentally examines the air-side performance of spiral finned tube heat exchangers. The effects of fin spacing, fin height, and tube alignment were investigated. Reduction of fin spacing decreased the Colburn j factor. However, the effect of fin height on the Colburn j factor was negligible. An increase of tube row decreased the Nusselt number for both staggered and in-line tube alignments. However, the decrease of the Nusselt number for the in-line tube alignment was much more significant than that of the staggered tube alignment. The average Nusselt number of the staggered tube alignment was larger than that of the in-line tube alignment by $10\%$ when the Reynolds number ranged from 300 to 1700. An empirical correlation of the Nusselt number was developed by using geometric parameters of heat exchanger and correction factors. The correction factor considered the effects of tube alignment and number of tube rows on the heat transfer. The proposed correlation yielded a mean deviation of $4\%$ from the present data.
