  • Fuel Cell Stack performance, which is influenced by the maintenance of a constant internal environment, requires high levels of air tightness. Used for analysis, gasket for fuel cell is made of elastic rubber materials and placed over separator, and shape of deformation of a gasket affects the transformation separator and airtightness while fastening structure. Separator as made of steel sheet isn't broken under pressure but can affect gas and cool water flow by the plastic deformation process. Therefore, it is understood that assembly process is well developed in case distribution of stress and shape of deformation is shown uniformly. This study is conducted on the assumption that a fuel cell maintenance is advantageous in that conditions. In this paper, analyses of unit cell and partial model were performed and distribution of stress and shape of deformation of Gasket and separator were analyzed to evaluate the airtightness while fastening structure.

  • We present two data-driven modeling methods, partial least square (PLS) and artificial neural network (ANN), to predict the major operating and performance variables of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack. PLS and ANN models were constructed using the experimental data obtained from the testing of a 30 kW-class PEM fuel cell stack, and then were compared with each other in terms of their prediction and computational performances. To reduce the complexity of the models, we combined a variables importance on PLS projection (VIP) as a variable selection method into the modeling procedure in which the predictor variables are selected from a set of input operation variables. The modeling results showed that the ANN models outperformed the PLS models in predicting the average cell voltage and cathode outlet temperature of the fuel cell stack. However, the PLS models also offered satisfactory prediction performances although they can only capture linear correlations between the predictor and output variables. Depending on the degree of modeling accuracy and speed, both ANN and PLS models can be employed for performance predictions, offline and online optimizations, controls, and fault diagnoses in the field of PEM fuel cell designs and operations.

  • The design and fabrication of a metallic bipolar plate-gasket assembly for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs) is defined. This bipolar plate-gasket assembly was prepared by inserting a previously prepared bipolar plate in the specially designed gasket mold. For this aim, a proprietary fluoro-silicone based rubber was injected directly into the bipolar plate borders. Gaskets obtained like this showed the chemically / physically stable and the good sealibilty in typically operating PEM fuel cell conditions. And also, this bipolar plate-gasket assembly shows lots of advantages with respect to traditional PEMFCs stack assembling systems: useful application to automative stacking due to easy handling, reduced fabrication time, possibility of quality control and failed elements substitution. This bipolar plate-gasket assembly was evaluated in the short fuel cell stack and met the leakage requirement for normal operation both in short-term and in long-term operation. Especially, it was confirmed that this gasket could be applied successfully even in the high pressure FEM fuel cell systems(over 2.0 bar in absolute pressure).

  • Fuel cells convert a fuel together with oxygen in a highly efficient electrochemical reaction to electricity and water. Since the electrochemical reaction in the fuel cell stack dose not generate any noise, Fuel cell systems are expected to operated much quieter than combustion engines. However, the tonal noise and the broad band noise caused by a centrifugal compressor and an electric motor cause which is required to feed the ambient air to the cathode of the fuel cell stack with high pressure. In this study, the multi-camber perforated muffler is used to reduce noise. We propose optimized muffler model using an axiomatic design method that optimizes the parameters of perforated muffler while keeping the volume of muffler minimized.

  • The robust stack storage node and sufficient cell capacitance for high performance is indispensable for 90 nm DRAM capacitor. For the first time, we successfully demonstrated MIS capacitor process integration for 90 nm DRAM technology. Novel cell layout and integration technology of 90 nm DRAM capacitor is proposed and developed, and it can be extended to the next generation DRAM. Diamond-shaped OCS with 1.8 um stack height is newly developed for large capacitor area with better stability. Furthermore, the novel $Al_2O_3/HfO_2$ dielectric material with equivalent oxide thickness (EOT) of 25 ${\AA}$ is adopted for obtaining sufficient cell capacitance. The reliable cell capacitance and leakage current of MIS capacitor is obtained with ~26 fF/cell and < 1 fA/ceil by $Al_2O_3/HfO_2$ dielectric material, respectively.

  • The main objective of this work is to investigate the characteristics of a heat pump system for fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). The present heat pump system adopts an electrically driven compressor running with R134a and uses the heat from the fuel cell stack as the heat source for the exterior heat exchanger. The experimental work has been done with various operating conditions such as different compressor speeds, fuel cell stack coolant temperatures and flow rates. The heating capacity was measured to be from 4 to 10 kW at $-20^{\circ}C$ ambient temperature, and the outlet temperature of interior heat exchanger was up to $70^{\circ}C$. After 30 seconds from start-up, the system reached a steady state and the heating capacity of 6.8 kW was acquired, and after 90 seconds, the air outlet temperature of interior heat exchanger became $35^{\circ}C$.

  • The solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is expected to be a candidate for distributed power sources in the next generation, due to its high efficiency and high-temperature waste heat utilization. In this study, the 5-cell SOFC stack was operated with pure hydrogen or reformed gas at anode side and air at cathode side. When stack was operated with diesel and methane ATR reformer, the influence of the $H_2O/C,\;O_2/C$ and GHSV on performance of stacks have been investigated. The result shows that the cell voltage was decreased with the increase of $H_2O/C$ and $O_2/C$ due to the partial pressure of fuel and water, and cell voltage was more sensitive to $O_2/C$ than $H_2O/C$. Next, the dynamic model of SOFC system included with ATR reformer was established and compared with experimental data. Based on dynamic model, the operation strategy to optimize SOFC-Reformer system was suggested and simulated.

  • This study considered the feasibility of controlling the air concentration by oscillating flow in fuel cell channels. The fuel cell stack performance is largely influenced by the air concentration. If the air concentration is lower than 2.5 times the stoichiometric of the inlet air, the fuel cell stack performance seriously deteriorates because of air starvation. In this respect, optimizing the air concentration is crucially important to maximizing the fuel cell stack performance. In this work, the effects of oscillating actuation were studied to control the concentration. Studies have shown that there are two non-dimensional key parameters related to the frequency and oscillating amplitude. This paper presents how those parameters affect the performance of the stack.
