  • Compliant bi-stable mechanism allows two stable states within its operation range staying at one of the local minimum states of the potential energy. Energy storage characteristics of the bi-stable mechanism offer two distinct and repeatable stable states, which require no power input to maintain it at each stable state. This paper suggests an equivalent model of the chevron-type bi-stable microactuator using the equivalent spring stiffness in the rectilinear and the rotational directions. From this model the range of spring stiffness where the bi-stable mechanism can be operated is analyzed and compared with the results of the FEA (Finite Element Analysis) using ANSYS for the buckling analysis, both of which show a good agreement. Based on the analysis, a newly designed chevron-type bi-stable MEMS actuator using hinges is suggested for the latch-up operation. It is found that the experimental response characteristics of around 36V for the bi-stable actuation for the 60$mu extrm{m}$ stroke correspond very well to the results of the equivalent model analysis after the change in cross-sectional area by the fabrication process is taken into account. Together with the resonance frequency experiment where 1760Hz is measured, it is shown that the chevron-type bi-stable MEMS actuator using hinges is applicable to the optical switch as an actuator.

  • This paper addresses the problem of identifying the class of all stable system transfer functions that interpolate the given partial impulse response sequence. In this context, classical Pade approximations that are also stable, are shown to be a special case of this general formulation. The theory developed in this connection is utilized to obtain a new criterion for determining the model order and system parameters for rational systems, and, further, to generate nonminimum phase optimal stable rational approximatinos of nonrational systems from its impulse response sequence.

  • In order to control the transient torsional vibration of rotational shaft system, the torsional stiffness of it has been taken into account in modelling the plant. In this paper the observer and controller has been designed in two ways. One is to consider the torsional stiffness and the other is to idealize the rotational shaft as rigid body. The third order observer considering torsional stiffness shows stable response on computer simulation. When the observer is designed on assumption of the rotational shaft being rigid body, the reduced order observer shows stable response whereas the full order observer shows unstable response.

  • In the field of population dynamics and chemical reaction the possibility or the existence of spatially and temporally nonhomogeneous solutions is a very important problem. For last 50 years or so there have been many results on the pattern formation of chemical reaction systems studying reaction systems with or without diffusions to explain instabilities and nonhomogeneous states arising in biological situations. In this paper we study time-dependent properties of a predator-prey system with functional response and give sufficient conditions that guarantee the existence of stable limit cycles.

  • This paper proposes a nonlinear virtual coupling fur haptic interface, which offers better performance while maintaining stability of the system. The nonlinear virtual coupling is designed based on a human response model. This human response model exploits delay between the human Intention and the actual change of arm impedance. The proposed approach provides with less conservative constraints for the design of stable haptic interface, compared with the traditional passivity condition. This allows increased performance that is verified through experiments.

  • This paper deals with the relationship between zeros and step response of the second and third order LTI(Linear Time Invariant) SISO(Single-Input and Single-Output) systems. As well known, if a system has a single unstable zero, it shows the step response with undershoot and, on the other hand, a stable zero slower than the dominant pole causes the system to have the step response with overshoot. Generally, in the case of a system with two unstable real zeros, it is known to have B type undershoot[7]. But there are many complex cases of the step response extrema corresponding to zeros location in third order systems. This paper investigates the whole cases depending on DC gains of the additive equivalence systems and they are to be classified by the region of zeros which are related to the shape of the step response. Moreover, monotone nondecreasing conditions are proposed in the case of complex conjugate zeros as well as the case of two stable zeros.

  • In this paper, a class of more general delayed viral infection model with lytic immune response is proposed by Song et al.[1] ([Journal of Mathematical Analysis Application 373 (2011), 345-355). We derive the basic reproduction numbers $R_0$ and $R_0^*$ 0 for the viral infection, and establish that the global dynamics are completely determined by the values of $R_0$ and $R_0^*$. If $R_0{\leq}1$, the viral-free equilibrium $E_0$ is globally asymptotically stable; if $R_0^*{\leq}1$ < $R_0$, the immune-free equilibrium $E_1$ is globally asymptotically stable; if $R_0^*$ > 1, the chronic-infection equilibrium $E_2$ is globally asymptotically stable by using the method of Lyapunov function.

  • This paper introduces new measures for the stability of slope estimation on the second order response surface at a point and on a sphere. As a measure of point stability of slope estimation, we suggest a point dispersion measure of slope variances over all directions at a point. A spherical dispersion measure is also proposed as a measure of spherical stability of slope estimation on each sphere. Some designs are studied to explore the usefulness of the proposed measures. Using the point dispersion measure, another concept of slope rotatability called equally-stable slope rotatability is proposed as a useful property of response surface designs. We provide a set of conditions for a design to have equally-stable slope rotatability.

  • A new control method for the robust position control of a brushless DC(BLDC) motor using the asymptotically stable adaptive load torque observer is presented. A precision position control is obtained for the BLDC motor system approximately linearized using the field-orientation method. And the application of the load torque observer is published in [1] using fixed gain. However, the flux linkage is not exactly known for a load torque observer. Therefore, a model reference adaptive observer is considered to overcome the problem of the unknown parameter in this paper. And stability analysis is carried out using Liapunov stability theorem. As a result, asymptotically stable observer gain can be obtained without affecting the overall system response. The load disturbance detected by the asymptotically stable adaptive observer is compensated by feedforwarding the equivalent current having the fast response.

  • Hybrid rocket combustion has a manifestation of stable response to the perturbations compared to solid propellant combustion. Recently, it has revealed that the low frequency combustion instability about 10 Hz was occurred mainly due to thermal inertia of solid fuel. In this paper, the combustion response function was theoretically derived by use of ZN (Zeldovich-Novozhilov) method. The result with HTPB/LOX combination showed a quite good agreement in response function with previous works and could predict the low frequency oscillations with a peak around 10 Hz which was observed experimentally. Also, it was found that the amplification region in the frequency domain is independent of the regression rate exponent n but showed the dependence of activation energy. Moreover, the response function has shown that the hybrid combustion system was stable due to negative heat release of solid fuel for vaporization, even though the addition of energetic ingredients such as AP and Al could lead to increase heat release at the fuel surface.
