  • Although the family methods with unconditional stability and numerical dissipation have been developed for structural dynamics they all are implicit methods and thus an iterative procedure is generally involved for each time step. In this work, a new family method is proposed. It involves no nonlinear iterations in addition to unconditional stability and favorable numerical dissipation, which can be continuously controlled. In particular, it can have a zero damping ratio. The most important improvement of this family method is that it involves no nonlinear iterations for each time step and thus it can save many computationally efforts when compared to the currently available dissipative implicit integration methods.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the structure of financial risk components of households. The financial risk of households was assumed to be composed of risk knowledge, risk attitude and risk management behavior. For this study, a questionnaire was developed and distributed to 700 households in Seoul and Kwangju, and there were 495 responses with usable data. The findings showed that income stability had a positive relationship with the level of risk knowledge and risk attitude. Income stability, household debt, age of the youngest child and risk knowledge were found to have direct effects on risky vs. non-risky asset ratio. Income stability, savings, age of the youngest child and risk knowledge also had significant effects on the number of risky assets owned by households. Risk knowledge was the most important determinant of risk management behavior.

  • A study to investigate the influence of combustion chamber shape, especially piston top face configuration, on the combustion stability is presented with CFD analysis and single cylinder GDI engine test. Initial configuration of the piston bowl was designed with CFD analysis and further parametric studies of the design factors on the piston top face were carried out through the single cylinder GDI engine test. It was found that both the geometry of piston top face and the compression ratio have great influences on the combustion stability. Of interest is that the design factors of the GDI piston to prevent mixture diffusion out of the piston bowl have important roles for the stable combustion at the stratified mixture condition. Also the relationship between spray impingement and flow pattern in a GDI piston bowl should be considered to design an optimal bowl configuration for stable stratified combustion.

  • In this paper, we studied the effects of mold temperature on the microstructure of injection molded parts. The weld line decreases in length and width as mold temperature increases. We investigated the dimensional stability of the parts made of two kinds of resin(polypropylene and polystyrene) by varying the mold temperature. As the mold temperature is high, both the shrinkage ratio and the thickness difference for the PS parts decreases. But the observation of PP parts shows a tendency to increase. The easiness of cavity filling and transcription of the mold texture is improved as the mold temperature is high.

  • Thermal and electrochemical properties were discussed with tris(2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)Phosphine (TTMPP) as a flame retradant additive for Li-ion battery. TTMPP showed excellent thermal stability with charged cathodes. Addition of 1 wt.% of the additive to the electrolyte improved the thermal stability without damaging the performance of the battery. The oxygne evolution reaction delayed nearly by $60^{\circ}C$. The capacity retention ratio in cycle life tests of the battery with 1 wt.% TTMPP was slightly improved comparing to the no additive cells.

  • This paper deals with a systematic approach to GA-PI controller design for static VAR compensator(SVC) using genetic algorithm(GA) to improve system stability. Genetic algorithms(GAs) are search algorithms based on the mechanics of natural selection and natural genetics. To verify the validity of the proposed method, investigated damping ratio of the eigenvalues of the electro-mechanical modes system with and without SVC. Also, we considered dynamic response of terminal speed deviation and terminal voltage deviation by applying a power fluctuation at heavy load, normal load and light to verify the robustness of the proposed. Thus, we proved usefulness of GA-PI controller design to improve the stability of single machine-bus with SVC system.

  • This study presents the methodological aspects of combustion instability modeling and provides the numerical results of the model (sub-scale) combustion chamber, regarding geometrical dimensions and operating conditions, which are for determining the combustion stability boundaries using the model chamber. An approach to determine the stability limits and acoustic characteristics of injectors is described intensively. Procedures for extrapolation of the model operating parameters to the actual conditions are presented, which allow the hot-fire test data to be presented by parameters of the combustion chamber pressure and mixture (oxidizer/fuel) ratio, which are customary for designers. Tests with the model chamber, based on the suggested scaling method, are far more cost-effective than with the actual (full-scale) chamber and useful for injector screening at the initial stage of the combustor development in a viewpoint of combustion instabilities.

  • In this study, syngas which is reformed from fossil fuel and has hydrogen as a major component, was added to a gasoline engine to improve combustion stability and exhaust emissions of idle state. Syngas fraction of the total supplied fuel varied to 0 %, 25 %, 50 % with various ignition timing and excess air ratio. Combustion stability, exhaust emissions, fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature were measured to investigate the effects of syngas addition on idle performance. Results showed that syngas has ability to widely extend lean operation limit and ignition retard range with dramatical reduction of engine out emissions. It is supposed that the usage of syngas in the internal combustion engine is an effective solution to meet the future strict emission regulations.

  • Cycle-to-cycle variation has long been recognized as limiting the range of operating conditions of spark ignition engines, in particular, under lean and highly diluted operation conditions. At a part load, some of the cycles tend to knock, while others may have incomplete combustion by the time the exhaust valve opens. An experimental study has been performed in order to evaluate the relative contribution of several relevant parameters on the cyclic variability in spark ignition engines. In general, the stability of engine operation is improved with fuel injector according to the optimal injection timing, but the stability of engine operation at idle is not improved compared with a practical gasoline engine. In this study, we investigated the relationship of the effect of operating conditions for the stability at low speed and load.

  • This paper proposes the fuzzy logic based variable step-size MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) method for the stability at the steady state and the improvement of the transient response in the wind power system. If the change value of duty ratio is set on stability of the steady state, MPPT control traces to maximum power point slowly. And if the change value is set on improvement of the transient response, the system output oscillates at the maximum power point. By adjusting the step size with fuzzy logic, it can be improved the MPPT response speed and stability at steady state when MPPT control is performed to track the maximum power point. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been verified by simulations and experimental results.
