  • The auxiliary-feed-water pump (AFWP) used to supply water during a station black out situation at nuclear power plants should meet the seismic qualification regulations stipulated in IEEE Std 323 and 344, so as to withstand earthquakes or dangerous situations. Here, we establish a model for the estimation of the structural integrity of this type of pump. If the natural frequency that results from a modal analysis is less than 33 Hz, we adopt a dynamic analysis, instead of a static analysis. A dynamic analysis was carried out taking into consideration seismic conditions such as the floor response spectra (FRS), an operation-base earthquake (OBE), and a safe-shutdown earthquake (SSE). Finally, an analytical estimation of the structural integrity of an AFWP is made through a comparison of calculated values and allowable values. If the result is less than the allowable stress, the pump is deemed to have good structural integrity. In addition, future studies will involve a stability check for rotor accidents that may occur during the operation of the pump.

  • Standard design of APR+(advanced power reactor plus) was certified at 2014 by Korea regulatory body. Based on the experience gained from OPR1000 and APR1400, the APR1400 was being developed as a 1,500MWe class reactor using Korean technologies for design code, reactor coolant pump, and man-machine interface system. APR+ has been basically designed to have the seismic design basis of safe shutdown earthquake (SSE) 0.3g, a 4-train safety concept based on N+2 design philosophy, and a passive auxiliary feedwater system (PAFS). Also, safety issues on the Fukushima-type accidents have been extensively reviewed and applied to enhance APR+ safety. APR+ provides higher reliability and safety against tsunami and earthquake. The purpose of this paper is to implement probabilistic safety assessment considering these design features and to analyze sensitivity of core damage frequency for large loss of coolant accident of APR+.

  • A total of 113 samples (basalts, tuffs, and siltstones from coal-bearing sediments) was collected from 14 sites of the Tertiary Changgi basin in southeastern Korea, and studied palaeomagnetically. Site-mean declination of the ChRM from 5 sites was found to be deflected clockwise about $30^{\circ}$. Other 5 sites showed no vertical-axis deflection of ChRM direction. In consideration of previous palaeomagnetic data from other Tertiary basins in the vicinity, it is interpreted that the deflection of ChRM directions has been caused by NNW-SSE simple shear associated with the opening of the East Sea, and the time of rotation should be about 16 Ma. Other 2 sites showed counterclockwise deflection of site-mean ChRM. These sites might be located among lager tectonic blocks which were rotating clockwise. AMS (anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility) study revealed $NE{\rightarrow}SW$ directed magnetic lineation at two tuffaceous sites. This might indicate flow direction of tuffs during the time of deposition. Most of the other sites showed load-foliation lying subparallel to the bedding plane. This must have been caused by gravitational loading acted vertically to the strata.

  • This study conducted a seismic qualification analysis of small savonius style vertical axis wind turbine(VAWT) using finite element method(FEM). The modal analysis was performed on the wind turbine structure to check the occurrence of resonance caused by the rotation of gearbox and windmill blades. Next, it conducted a seismic response spectrum analysis due to horizontal and vertical seismic load of required response spectrum of safe shutdown earthquake with 5 % damping(RRS/SSE 5%) of KS C IEC 61400 and conducted a static analysis due to deadweight and wind load. The total maximum stress of the VAWT structure was calculated by adding the maximum stresses due to each load case using the square root of the sum of the squares(SRSS) method. Finally, the structural safety of the VAWT structure was verified by comparing the total maximum stress and the allowable stress.

  • In order to investigate the velocity structure of the southern part of the Korean peninsula, exploded seismic signals were recorded for 120 s along a 294-km WNW-ESE line and 150 s along a 335-km NNW-SSE line in 2002 and 2004, respectively. Velocity tomograms were derived from inverting P-wave and S-wave first arrival times. The raypaths indicate several midcrust interfaces. The shallowest one is at the approximate depth of $2{\sim}3\;km$ with refraction velocities of approximately Vp=6.0 and Vs=3.5 km/s, respectively. The second one of $15{\sim}17\;km$ depth has refraction velocities of approximately Vp=7.1 and Vs=3.7 km/s, respectively. The deepest significant interface varies in depth from 30.8 km to 36.1 km. The critically refracting Vp of $7.8{\sim}8.1\;km/s$ and Vs of $4.2{\sim}4.6\;km/s$ along this interface which may correspond to the Moho discontinuity. The velocity tomograms show (1) existence of a low-velocity zone centered at $6{\sim}7\;km$ depth under the Okchon fold belt and the Yeongnam massif, (2) extension of the Yeongdon fault down to greater than 10 km, and (3) existence of high-velocity materials under the Gyeongsan basin less than 4.2 km thick.

  • Filter cake formation during rotary drilling operation is an unavoidable scenario, hence there is need for constant improvement in the approaches used in monitoring the cake thickness growth in order to prevent drill-string sticking. This study proposes an improved model that predicts the growth of mud cake thickness overtime with the consideration of the addition of nanoparticles in the formulated drilling fluid system. Ferric oxide, titanium dioxide and copper oxide nanoparticles were used in varying amounts (2 g, 4 g and 6 g), and filtration data were obtained from the HPHT filtration test. The filter cakes formed were further analyzed with scanning electron microscope to obtain the morphological characteristics. The data obtained was used to validate the new filtrate loss model. This model specifically presents the concept of time variation in filter cake formation as against the previous works of constant and definite time. Regression coefficient which is a statistical measure was used to validate the new model and the predicted results were compared with the API model. The new model showed R2 values of 99.9%, and the predictions from the proposed filtration model can be said to be more closely related to the experimental data than that predicted from the API model from the SSE and RMSE results.

  • The results from the Individual Plant Examination of External Event of Yonggwyang nuclear power plants, unit 3 & 4, in Korea have shown that the high degree of diversities of the experts' opinions on seismicity and attenuation models is su, pp.sed to be generic cause of uncertainty of APEs(annual exceedance probability) in the PAHA(probabilistic seismic hazard analysis). This study investigated the sensitivity of the focal depth, which is one of the most uncertain seismicity parameters in Korea, Significant differences in resultant values of annual exceedance probabilities and much more symmetrical shape of the resultant PDFs(probability density functions), in case of consideration of focal depth, are found. These two results suggest that, even for the same seismic input data set including the seismicity models and ground motion attenuation models, to consider focal depth additionally for probabilistic seismic hazard analysis evaluation makes significant influence on the distributions of uncertainties and probabilities of exceedance per year for the whole ranges of seismic hazard levels. These facts suggest that it is necessary to derive focal depth parameter more effectively from the historical and instrumental documents on earthquake phenomena in Koran Peninsula for the future study of PSHA.

  • The purpose of this study is to develope the strength prediction model by Maturity Method. A maturity function is a mathematical expression to account for the combined effects of time and temperature on the strength development of a cementious mixture. The method of equivalent ages is to use Arrhenius equation which indicates the influence of curing temperature on the initial hydration ratio of cement. For the experimental factors of this study, we selected the concrete mixing of W/C ratio 45, 50, 55 and 60% and curing temperature 5, 10, 20 and $30^{\circ}C$. And we compare and evaluate with logistic model that is existing strength prediction model, because we have to verify adaption possibility of new strength prediction model which is proposed by maturity method. As the results, it is found that investigation of the activation energy that are used to calculate equivalent age is necessary, and new strength prediction model was proved to be more accurate in the strength prediction than logistic model in the early age. Moreover, the use of new model was more reasonable because it has low SSE and high decisive factor.

  • $Cu_2ZnSn(S_x,Se_{1-x})_4$ (CZTSSe) thin films were prepared by sulfurization of evaporated precursor thin films. Precursor was prepared using evaporation method at room temperature. The sulfurization was carried out in a graphite box with S powder at different temperatures. The temperatures were varied in a four step process from $520^{\circ}C$ to $580^{\circ}C$. The effects of the sulfurization temperature on the micro-structural, morphological, and compositional properties of the CZTSSe thin films were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The XRD and Raman results showed that the sulfurized thin films had a single kesterite crystal CZTSSe. From the FE-SEM and TEM results, the $Mo(S_x,Se_{1-x})_2$ (MoSSe) interfacial layers of the sulfurized CZTS thin films were observed and their thickness was seen to increase with increasing sulfurization temperature. The microstructures of the CZTSSe thin films were strongly related to the sulfurization temperatures. The voids in the CZTSSe thin films increased with the increasing sulfurization temperature.
